I think we can all agree how maddening it is to see Broner not letting his hands go. He takes too many liberties in the ring bottom line. He actually has decent power (Maidana saying he hit harder than Floyd) and has the chin to take even some of the worst power shots. But what gives? Mikey is a great ring tactician so of course finding flaws in his game would be hard but this is becoming a defining characteristic for Broner. He just doesn't throw near enough punches or have the quickness to strike first before he gets wailed on.
Like any profession, you can't neglect your trade for months on end, and then expect to be at your best twice per year. I suspect between fights he is not living well. Eating the wrong foods, drinking, smoking, and not hitting the gym often enough to stay sharp. You cannot be a world class boxer if you are only in the gym for two 8-week training camps each year.
Broner needs to make a serious commitment to this sport if he wants to remain relevant. I also think he needs a new team in his corner. New trainer, new atmosphere to train.
Exactly this!
I am just inclined to think that Broner has been ill-disciplined for so long now it is going to be a real difficult struggle for him to do the things he needs to do.
when did broner ever open up against guys around his size who could hit him back?
you're confusing shot with being hte fighter he always was. he wants a slow pace where he can pick spots to be flashy and counter. he doesn't want you to make him move around the ring.
mikey has great balance and he was big enough for his punches to reach broner, and hit hard enough for him to think twice about opening up.
if broner had opened up more he would have gotten knocked out or rocked. you have to understand that, it is clear as day. broner doesn't open up becaues he can't. he'll tire, lose that quarter of a second he needs to stay in the fight and see punches before they hit, and get beat up by a guy like garcia.
just accept that garcia is a much, much better boxer and move on. enough of these excuses.
IF AB just opened up doe.

It's not really about whether you like/don't like him as a "person", is it? You make some good points about what he needs, what he does well. I just wonder if, perhaps, it is too late to make those changes?
Maybe, maybe not. Probably not.
I think his trainer was giving him great advice in between rounds.
What Broner needs is combination punching, thats it really. He pot shots too much and is looking for that one big shot all night.
He throws punches well, pretty good defense --- he has a lot of wasted talent. I can't believe I'm saying so many positive things about a person I hate with such venom.

He just doesn't have it. He thinks too highly of himself and it reflects in the way he fights. I wouldn't say he is shot, but he's gate keeper status now. He really needs to be paid less money now, something more suitable to gate keeper rate. All those overpayments have given him a false sense of worth.
... Broner always showed a low output... I guess he was drained last Saturday... in the first two rounds he tried to move like Floyd, but he soon gave up and displayed his usual flat footed, no upper body movement game... :)
Modern Day Zab Judah. Some fighters choked in the biggest fights of their careers.
I really don't see it as choking to be honest. Choking is when you were better and failed to meet expectations. ]
Broner wasn't better than Maidana, Porter, or Garcia. All three of those guys were better than him and the results went accordingly.
No. Broner has always been this way. It's just even more amplified when he faces top opposition. But he's always had issues pulling the trigger. I mean we're talking about the same motherf**ker who was getting tuned up by GAVIN REES, lmao. Yes obviously Broner would ultimately go on to stop Rees' midget ass but I remember people being kinda stunned at the success that an incredibly over matched Rees was having against Broner. His defenders said it was because he was "letting" Rees get off but looking back...that was the same Broner we see today. Just like the Broner we saw that threw some 300 less punches than Malignaggi in their fight.
He is what he is. He's not shot and a new trainer isn't going to suddenly transform him. It's not about a lack of training and not taking sh*t seriously. He's just a limited fighter at the end of the day. He likes to fight when he wants to fight and when his opponent brings the fight to him his only response is to shell up and shake his head no. And offer minimal to zero return fire. He ain't no bum obviously but he also clearly has (and never will) be an A fighter.
Needle in the haystack prospects aren't winning titles in 4 different weight divisions even vs the less the #1 guys Broner won those titles against. Broner might be the worst guy to win fights vs top ten guys in 4 different divisions, but that isn't the biggest group of cats who can do that either. Hell most guys don't even fight in 4 divisions at a high level in their whole career.
I can understand people dogging Broner, but to act like he's not of above average talent is wayyyyyy underselling him.
Didn't mean he wouldn't get ANY attention, he would have still been a top prospect. But it was the floyd association that led to all the premature "next fighter of the decade" proclamations.
I remember seeing an interview where even Dana White was raving about how he doubts Adrien Broner will ever lose a boxing match, he's floyd 2.0 updated, etc.
