I mean honestly it's not as if it really matters -- you're not teaching a going on 39 year old boxer any new tricks. But there's seems to be a lot of sentiment around the board that either A) Manny should part ways with Freddie, or B) It's likely that Manny parts ways with Freddie. Part of me thinks it's ludicrous at this stage but I gotta admit, the fallout from the Horn fight has been complete disaster.
You got Freddie admitting that he has no control over his own corner. You got Manny not even making eye contact or saying a word to Freddie after the fight. You got Freddie going public and saying that Manny hasn't paid him for his corner work in the Horn fight. It's gotten pretty ugly.
So how realistic is it really -- that come the Horn rematch Freddie is no longer running Manny Pacquiao's corner?
The only way I see Manny and Freddie splitting is if Manny is adamant about continuing to fight and Freddie is adamant that Manny retires.
It's happened with long time boxer-trainer combos before where they split.
I doubt it happens, but if a split between the two does happen. Manny should train with Abel Sanchez for the remainder of his career.
Here's some candidates
Robert Garcia
Nacho Beristain
Teddy Atlas? Lol
Joel Diaz
Garcia, Beristain, and Diaz all know Manny quite well having been in the opposite corner of Manny for many fights (something like 9 or 10 times between them) so that's why I mention them first.
The end is near. But how near? To your point, who cares.
But while I can see Manny hanging on out of sheer loyalty, I actually think Roach is the type of guy who could walk away pretty soon. Big paydays are always nice, but he hates the frustration of training a fighter who has too many other jobs and interests to truly dedicate himself to boxing. The decline is really starting to show.
I'd guess Roach walks after the rematch with Horn.
And look, if Manny is hellbent on getting retired in the ring, maybe a parting of the ways would actually be the best thing. Like I said you're not teaching an old dog any new tricks, but maybe just a change of scenery and a fresh new voice would be a welcome change. They've been together FOREVER. There's only so many different ways you can deliver a message to a fighter. You gotta wonder if Freddie's working relationship with Manny has gotten stale. And it's been a long ass f**king time since I remember actually seeing/hearing Freddie delivering any worthwhile corner advice and strategy. I mean maybe he is, it's not like I'm hearing and seeing what goes down in the corner every single time between rounds. But that corner just seems so...incredibly stale. And has for a while.
