Now, I don't believe it will happen. Maybe there is a 0.1% but in a fight between two athletes, both with fists, anything could happen and we've seen it happen. So, if that 0.1% chance comes off...then what? As boxing fans, do we make excuses?
Floyd was old? 2 years retired? Mcgregor was too big?
Or do we take the loss on the chin and give McG his props? Because let me tell you, I would give him 100% credit. Mayweather isn't a normal 40 year old and he isnt a 40 year old fighter. In 21 years he has had 49 fights, only a handful of them have been that physical and not a single one of them has been a war. His body is fresh, it's not broken up like so many fighters through history.
Imo, McG would not be beating an old fighter and certainly not an old man. I believe he beats a slightly passed prime Mayweather and that would be HUGE. It probably makes McG one of the most marketable athletes on the planet. He could overtake AJs earning potential.
And...we'd all have egg on our face.
I'm not saying its not about that to some people. I think the overwhelming majority of the people showing interest in this fight have a skewed opinion of what its about & yea a good clip if not most of them probably do think its boxing vs MMA. So I guess if we are going by the theory of perception creates our reality you are right.
But I'd say thats not my perception. To me this is this guy vs that guy just like every other fight is at the end of the day. There is no boxing vs MMA, there is no Mexican guy, PRican guy, Russian guy, African guy, White guy or black guy. There is just two mfers hitting each other in the head trying to find out who's better. Thats what boxing is about to me.
Well you can think like that personally and it's fine. But I was talking on a larger scope.
i guess floyd could break his hand or injure himself. he's not going to lose because he's getting beat up. mcgregor is just young. that's it. floyd would need to be a hell of a lot older to lose to a complete novice just becuase he is young. you'll find better boxers competing in the local golden gloves. that's just a fact. you can watch mcgregor spar or hit the bag if you don't believe me. no feints, no head movement, no angles, no subtleties, and even no snap on his shots. he is not a boxer. he just moves his arms.
mcgregor is going to look like the novice he is.
however, if he does win, it's the biggest black eye on the sport in a long, long time. biggest upset of all time, will make buster douglas look like an ant hill next to a mountain.
I'm with you. The win is almost impossible but I was playing hypothetical lol
this place will go full retard and when that gets REALLY bad, the MMA fans will invade
That's exactly what I was thinking.
You know those twits over on the MMA forums will invade this place.
Boxingscene might crash for a month.
Slight bit of difference between a fight, and a vote.
not really. the judges "vote" for the winner and its often mind boggling the result they come up. kovalev won the fight yet they "voted" for ward in stunning fashion in roundsl ike round 10. maybe conor can steal a decision like that. its all about popularity/reputation/corruption. the actual fight is almost meaningless unless someone gets kod cold

Every loss is huge to the guy losing.
And people keep wanting to make this into something bigger than it is with boxing vs MMA. This isn't boxing vs MMA. This is two guys fighting. Very popular guys with lotsa eyes on them, but two guys all the same. They represent themselves not a sport ultimately. And whichever guy loses will have himself to blame so if Floyd loses he'll need talking points or excuses not us fans. This is boxing (*GGG voice*), sh^t happens.
Your kidding yourself if you don't think it's boxing v mma.
If Conor wins it's over for boxing. That's why I never wanted this fight to happen. If lightning strikes and Floyd loses I just don't see anyone taking boxing seriously again. They will always say an mma fighter would win.
But I also think it would open up more fights for Conor. A Conor/Canelo fight would be bigger than a fight with floyd.
Boxing would be far from done lol but it might make conor into a more consistent boxing presence

If cmg win, its very bad for boxing obviously. Casuals think Mayweather is like by far the best fighter in today boxing but they dont know ****. Conor got a fair chance to win here, or at least make it to 12 versus a old, done, wayyy past prime mayweather. But he would get destroyed inside 6 rounds by Crawford or Spence like very badly
If he wins we simply ask for Mcgregor vs GGG and go best 2/3
LOL
I don't think people understand. Asking if McGregor has a shot is like asking of somebody who goes ice skating with his family every Christmas could play defenseman against Wayne Gretzky in a one on one and expect to win. McGregor has reasonably fast hands but he doesn't have a fast twitch muscle in his lower body. He's going to make a 40 year old guy look half his age.
McGregor will be lucky to land one good punch.
For those who need a refresher who how important controlling distance is watch Mayweather vs. Marquez again if you can stomach it. Floyd could do anything he wanted in there. JMM looked like he was bolted to the ground.
This is going to be ten times worse than that.
Look, I totally understand this whic his why I think May wins BUT there is always a miniscule chance in a fight. Yo got fists? YOu can make it happen...even if its less likely than larry getting off drugs and getting laid.
I think boxing fans take this sh^t too seriously. Mickey Rourke, the actor, had a boxing career. Did any of you have to explain why a actor went undefeated in boxing to anyone?
If somehow Floyd catches a L to Conor then Floyd catches a L to Conor & you don't need talking points to talk to non-boxing fans about it, whatever Conor beat him with thats how Conor beat him. You'll be able to see with your eyes what happened.
LOL cmon now, you are downplaying the biggest ppv since May/Pac and you're downplaying the undertones of MMA or "real fighting" against the perceived safer option of boxing. You're also downplaying the effect of the internet on rivalries such as this.
The loss would be huge.

Then we could be absolutely sure we would never have to hear from Floyd again as I don't think his ego would be able to take it.
That's true. In general, it would be Floyd's reputation that takes a huge hit.
Boxing is boxing, it'll remain intact with good fights. It's not like people are suddenly not going to want to watch good fights because Floyd lost to a UFC fighter. All that will happen is hardcore UFC guys will keep talking about how it's the superior sport.
To 99% of other people who watch the event, it'll be old news within a week and they will find something else to talk about and go back to being not interested in boxing.
