Hey, I will go on record as saying I thought the stoppage was premature.
I thought Weeks should have found a way to give an 8 count (ie claim the ropes held him up from a KD).
But, I am told this was not an option.
I also did not see any punch Ward threw that was an obvious foul.
A bit low, maybe the very last one before Weeks stepped in but that was as much Kova bent over as anything else.
So, here's the question...
What happens if Weeks just lets it go on?
Doesn't stop anything, just lets Ward keep butchering Kovalev?
Would y'all be in here today wondering why Weeks didn't step in sooner?
Can we agree that Tony Weeks probably saved the rest of Kova's career if not his life?
I don't understand why some of those Andre Ward FANATICS are so concerned about Sergey Kovalev's health all of a sudden. Some of those FANATICS were even claiming that this racist Russian Kovalev is better off dead or he should be rid from boxing. However, all of a sudden, some of the Andre Ward FANATICS are NOW claiming it's somehow the right decision for Sergey Kovalev to be protected from further potential damage / harm. It's seems as if those Ward FANATICS are not too confident in Andre Ward's ability to truly KO an opponent. As such, they are content in having a premature stoppage and then pretending that it was a uncontroversial stoppage because they aren't confident in Andre Ward's chances of scoring a proper CLEAN KNOCKOUT. Hence, they didn't want the fight to continue because they weren't confident in Andre Ward's chances of potentially producing a CLEAN KNOCKOUT on an opponent when any other knockout artist would've done so convincingly.
Anyway, it's pure speculation for anybody to claim that somehow Sergey Kovalev would've died had the fight continued or anything along those lines. These are not facts! If I were to claim Sergey Kovalev would've made a comeback and won the fight by knockout or decision had the fight continued, it'd hold just as much value / worth as those that are claiming Kovalev would've died had the fight continued. In other words, neither claims are facts and both are just personal opinions.
Personally, the fight should've continued. If Sergey Kovalev were to truly die after the fight by someone who is a feather fist with a 50% knockout record and someone who he himself claims has no punching power, whilst also taking into consideration that he himself killed another opponent named Roman Simakov, then he probably deserves to die. He'd probably think to himself that if he were to get killed by Andre Ward, then he doesn't deserve to live. His family, wife and kids probably deserve a better man as a father and husband.
If I were to box against an average female and were to be in a position of getting killed by her legal punches, then I'd probably rather die than quit and then live. What would I have anything to live for after the embarrassment / shame? Not just what I exposed to others, but also the feeling of it myself that I would have to live with forever. Perhaps Kovalev felt the same way, that he'd rather die than live and feel the embarrassment of 'NEARLY' getting killed by Andre Ward in a boxing bout.
Truth is, Sergey Kovalev's damage in the final round didn't occur just from legal body punches (Ward did land plenty of them), but also with a combination of illegal low blows. Andre Ward landed enough low blows for it badly damage Kovalev, to the point where he was about to be stopped. Without those low blows, Kovalev may have still been damaged but not to the point where he was going to be stopped.
Considering illegal low blows did cause Kovalev to be stopped as much as legal body punches did, the referee should've allowed Kovalev time to recover from those low blows instead of letting the bout continue and then stopping the bout.
So if Kovalev were to die from legal punches from Ward had the fight continued, then it should've just happened (which was extremely unlikely to happen anyway). However, if the death occurred from illegal punches such as low blows, then that's unacceptable. Instead, the referee should allow Kovalev time to recover whilst warning / penalizing Ward at the first moment of Kovalev showing any physical discomfort from those illegal low blows.

Completely irrelevant since Weeks established what was legal and what wasn't in his prefight instruction.
That was the beltline...which is where Ward hit him...a lot.
And BTW, according to your definition, most of the body shots landed by either guy were illegal.
did u see weeks say that area was legal in the instructions? look in my sig... u saying those were low?
There were low shots in the fight, yes. Enough that weeks warned ward for it. Mostly they were borderline, with a few straying low but at the end it was blatantly low.
all these threads complaining about low blows we should make one about kovs mental weakness, turning back to opponent, faking to get the ref to react n get rest, giving up, these are all things that seem to follow any boxer who does it (zab Judah and more) but for some reason its overlooked with kov. the last punch was pretty low because kov was in an ILLEGAL position due to getting his azz whooped, but what about everything that led to him quitting like that. No boxing fan should support a fighter turning his back to avoid punishment. where are the complaints about these things??????? just like u all ignored kovs holding in the first fight I see ur up to the same BS.
My initial reaction watching it was weeks is getting ready to step in to warn ward for low blows or take a point. I did think kovalev was beaten, but he was also reacting to low blows...whether intentional or not. The shots throughout the fight were borderline and a lot of kovalev's reaction had to do with his inability to take punches in that region...but in his mind he was reacting to low blows. It wasn't the first time in the fight either. He may have been looking for weeks to take a point or warn ward, who knows. What he should have done is hit ward back low when it happened early on to force the ref's hand to take action.
did u see weeks say that area was legal in the instructions? look in my sig... u saying those were low?
you dont have to explain this to reasonable boxing fans...the only ones crying are the insecure EE fanboys.....real boxing fans saw what happened
that close up of kovalevs face while he was sitting on the ropes with weeks said it all
Ward noticed that Kovalev was whining about low blows.
Ward noticed Tony Weeks wasn't deducting points for low blows.
Ward took advantage and deliberately threw body punches without worrying if they were low or not because he knew they bothered Kovalev and he knew it was unlikely that he would be DQ'd.
None of those body shots were on accident, Andre Ward is a pretty smart fighter. :fing02:
The punches were on the beltline and the beltline is perfectly legal.

we'll agree to disagree. it is pretty effective though and it gets the job done. i dont approve, but it is a fight and there's no nice guys when it comes to war.
True.
And all the best have that mean streak...
We disagree about the inside game.
It isn't classically pretty like that of others, but it is damned effective and all science, and I like that.
I don't think Ward is a dirty fighter per se. But, I also don't think he is above using certain tactics in a fight to get in the head of his opponent.

ward's inside fighting is a whole other convo. i'm a james toney kinda guy and i think ward's inside skills leave alot to be desired.
i know dirty when i see it because i fight the same way. you wanna see an inside fight...corrales vs castillo. or fenech vs nelson. ehhh, watch any azumah nelson fight haha. most of them were good. regardless of in-fighting.
actually hopkins vs glen johnson, hop did some nice clean inside work and punished the body.
ward is great at what he does but i dont consider him a great inside fighter. he gets in there with the head, hence the kovalev headlocks.
great sport though, yeah? so many dynamics to it and totally subjective to what you like. it can be broken down in so many ways.
for example..when i watched degale vs dirrell in person, there was this insane bodyshot that degale landed and you couldnt even hear it on tv. but in the arena, it was like OOOOMPH and everyone got into it.
good fight this weekend, both guys got down and dirty and i wish there was a more conclusive ending, but whatever. we're only halfway through the year and there have been some pretty good fights. kov-ward 2 being one of them. that first half was like damn. so many skillful and subtle things going on

I just showed you the last punch that stopped the fight and you admitted it was a low blow. Banned from the thread for being a dumb troll.
You're the idiot trying to prove legal punches were fouls.
And, you have to be drinking if you think I take you seriously as far as any of this.
You do realize you are attempting to ban me from my own thread, right?
Chucklehead...
I think Ward was warned once for going a bit low (on a punch that actually wasn't low). Almost everything was legal and on the beltline.
Get over it.

I think that until Kova learns to either negate Ward inside or fight back hard enough so its a war of attrition (ie takes something out of Ward the way Ward takes it out of him) he will always lose to Ward.
But, against Adonis, Kova's style is still plenty lethal enough.
And, if he gets to the young guys (Beiterbiev, Bivol) sooner rather than later, he beats them too.

Kovalev didn't protect himself twice, and both times Ward stopped.
Once when he turned his back around fully, and the next time when he stopped punching before Weeks stepped in.
A more opportunistic fighter like let's say Mayweather, would've gone for a quick strike right there whil Kovalev was complaining like he did to Gatti and Ortiz.
Good observation.
For a "dirty" fighter, Ward sure is kind of a sportsman doe...

What no one is saying is that If the ref did his job kovalev would have one the rd 10-8 and be given a 5 minute break to recover.

Eventually, the chatter will die down and people will get on with their lives. Right now, you've got a core group of people desperately hanging on to anything and everything to try and discredit Ward's victories. It's easier to be bitter, than it is to grow up and say the better man won.
Best thing anyone can do is ignore the bullsh*t and let it disappear. Remember when the Tyson Fury bandwagon was overcrowded, and sympathy and support for him was littered all over NSB? Those scrubs got bored and moved onto the next hot topic. The same will happen here.
