There has been a lot of talk about why May-Mac on August 26 hurts Canelo-Golovkin, and this is probably true for 2 reasons:
1. They are three weeks apart, and some people will only buy one event or the other, and some of those people will choose May-Mac.
2. May-Mac will be a bad, unentertaining fight, and reduce viewers for all fights, possibly for years.
But people have not been talking about the fact that this is also essentially self sabotage, reducing his own ppv numbers in a petty rebuke of GBP, Canelo and Golovkin.
1. The Mexican and Mexican American fans that make Mexican Independence Day such a big weekend for boxing are going to support Canelo first. If that means not buying the May-Mac fight, so be it. If May-Mac was later, say November, then a lot of the Mexican fans would not be forced to choose which fight to buy. He's knowingly shooting himself in the foot by making a huge number of these fans choose between him and Canelo, and they are going to choose Canelo.
2. Canelo-Golovkin will likely be a very very good fight, and could increased interest in boxing. May-Mac in November would benefit from following Canelo-Golovkin.
I am not saying Canelo Golovkin is the bigger fight or won't be hurt by May-Mac. I am saying that May-Mac will also be hurt being so close to Canelo-Golovkin, and that is a self inflicted wound.
Given that Mayweather is himself a boxing promoter now, it is sad to see him repeatedly harming the sport that he has so benefited from and still wishes to be involved in.
Mayweather will make a sh*tload of money and most likely sell 4 million ppvs.
However, having the fight in August is NOT maximizing revenue. August is not a month where people are home in front of their tv screens. The last week of August is actually one of the most common vacation months for Americans.
The fight is only in August because Mayweather needs the attention and wants to screw over Oscar, Canelo, Golovkin, and boxing as a whole. Boxing has had a great year without him and he is back to try to ruin it just so he can have the spotlight.
And yet, Mayweather benefits from a diehard group of fans who would never question or criticize him for anything, and would certainly give him a blowjob if he asked for it.

Welcome to 2017. This is the future of boxing. The ever so innovative and influential FLOYD HAS DONE IT AGAIN.
Take PPV business model and shove it.
Trends go with the money.
GGG AND ALVEREZ HAD THEIR OPPORTUNITY 1 YEAR AGO.
You have one guy who built his resume on tomato cans in 1 division the other guy giving away belts because he wasn't ready.
Instead of hating Floyd you should hate those who are responsible.
almost every projection has this fight selling as much or more than Floyd/ Manny. Floyd stands to make at least $100 mil he can then use to promote fights.
also, this fight will draw from a completely different base than just boxing fans.
I can't see how this is bad financially for any entity involved.
where did you get that idea from?

if Floyd was fighting a boxer you would have a point. but he is fighting a UFC fighter.
this fight will be supported by most UFC fans. the Mexicans are irrelevant when it comes to mayweather vs McGregor.
