I must say Tony makes a great point about Paulie's fight against Cotto tbh. He says it HERE. Do we agree with him? Or is he not in a position to talk after he folded against Superman and looked like he didn't want anymore too?
Bellew should know better, doesn't he realize he could be in that position too? Brook didn't quit because it got too tough, ala Ortiz, the man is trying to protect his eyesight.
Maybe I'm just crazy for thinking this way, but I think fighters are entitled to put their quality of life outside the ring above risking their health over the entertainment of people that don't truly care about them.
combat sports fans expect a lot. can you imagine any other sport with the guys continuing with a broken fuking eye socket? they would be taken to the doctors immediately. boxing/mma we expect them to not only keep going but also keep getting punched in their broken eye and risk blindness.
did he quit? absolutely. but he had a good reason to imo.
Dick move by Bellew. Each fighter reacts differently to injuries. Coming into this fight we didn't know where Brook would be physically and mentally after the GGG fight. He fought his heart out until it was obvious he was overmatched. Looking at the scorecards we can say he made the right choice, he was going to lose a decision anyway, so it turned out for the best that he didn't risk further injury. Maybe Bellew and some of the casuals would have been happy if Brook ended up like McClellen or Benitez.
Ehh.. Broken eye sockets are no joke. Everyone has a different pain threshold, so comparing to Paulie doesn't mean much. If you can fight through it, by all means, but I would never get mad at someone for not continuing because of it
ill say this...i remember cotto/paulie very well...i made the choice over the bernard ppv that night...and paulie won my respect and fandom that night.
Im certain if Kell Brook were put in Bellews position in those fights he would have also fought on.
Its different when you have a broken eye socket for the 2nd time, he probably remembered how bad it was the first time and all he had to go through with surgery and all.
Probably didnt want to go through with that again, knowing him going blind was actually a possibility
IMO he did the right thing and lived to fight for another day.
I agree regarding levels of injury. Bellew has said this kind of thing before though.
I think you would have to nail that guy to the floor.
I don't think that is the right thing by the way because Bellew knows the implications of what he is saying.
This is one of those scenarios where a boxer who has form can say this kind of stuff.
Bellew has been stopped once on his feet and he was away with the fairies.
But he's suffered heavy knockdowns such as the one against Ovil McKenzie, Makubu, and gone for it.
When Bellew says Kell will be kicking himself I reckon he might be right but absolutely nobody else in Kell's family or inner circle will feel the same way. For me he was incapacitated and even tried his last hurrah in round 10.
Bellew has would likely live up to his own words. But that's not a normal thing. It's extraordinary.

This is back to back. We give other boxers sh1t for doing it once. Some people gave Dirrell hell for getting sucker punched twice 7 years apart. Brook doesn't get a pass on this.
Bellew just called it like he (and a lot of other people) saw it.

Kell took quite a beating before he quit, I wasn't mad at that knee.
Spence was landing clean hard shots, from the 8th rnd on, and didn't slow down one bit from that point, fight was over.
I thought kell was smart to quit.
If it was another injury I would agree but you don't mess with your eyesight. He's going to risk blindness and never being able to see his friends and family? Plus, who knows what the doctors told him.

I don't mind so much hearing another fighter with this opinion. Keyboard warriors going in on him is abit hard to stomach. These are people who cry when their Internet goes down.
i hate bellew , but hes a great analyst , called a quitter a quitter , brook looked soft against carson jones , i give him the benefit of the doubt against ggg , but had it not been for the golovkin fight every man and his dog would of called him a quitter , on the flip side i cant think of any fighter in history having back to back broken eye sockets , eddie hearn promoting at its finest . . . brook could be unbeaten 147 champ , went to 154 beat liam smith 2 weight world champ unbeaten with the world at his feet , frank warren may be a dinosaur but he looks after his fighters in the ring
