Surely nobody would talk trash about Golovkin if he lost to Canelo while being 40 years old right? Right? So my question is, at what age would Canelo be expected to win without any worry? I started off 2 years ago predicting a stoppage victory for Golovkin but now I'm not so sure. I think if the fight is hosted in 2018 I can safely bet all my stripper money on Canelo.
He will never be respected (outside of his cult following fans) until he fights Golovkin or another fighter that is in his prime. Without a catchweight, with drug testing and for at least one belt. Until then, to most fight fans, he's a show fighter who only looks for the weakest guys he can find while making the most money. All while claiming to be the best. What he doesn't realize is, even if he fought Golovkin last year and lost, he would have gained a lot of respect from it
Not sure about GGG's best-before age, but Canelo will never get full credit if he beats him now. When the hype for the match up was at its peak, he dropped his green belt, and instead fought the weakest title holder in a lighter division i.e. less than 155. Business move or otherwise, the fans' perception is that GBP is waiting for GGG's skills to diminish. And Canelo is down with the strategy. That stink will never dissipate.
Ray Leonard also did this to Marvin Hagler, although the mitigating factor is that Leonard himself returned after a 3-year retirement and therefore no longer prime either. Conversely, when Tommy Hearns got sparked, he challenged a prime Hagler. Canelo has squandered a similar opportunity for legacy against GGG.
If he's still undefeated than it will be he same.
It's up to BBB side if the fight happens sooner rather than later. He has his offer and it's not getting any better after his last PPV bombed again. Take it or fight bums for what your making now until your past your prime.
It's not like Canelo is offering chump change here. If it's such an easy fight like BBB sides 12 fans here say it is, take the money and beat his ass then dictate terms in a rematch. Seems BBB side isn't as confident as his supporters here.
It'll never happen. Candelita is getting beaten down by Chavez here shortly so it's a moot point.
Chavez isnt beating canelo and you know it, or else you would have already accepted my bet...
Put up or shut up...
The reason I don't see the fight happening this year is because I think Canelo needs to fight a good middleweight before he faces the best middleweight. The 5 fighters you listed would be ideal and I'd say likely opponents with the most likely fight being vs Lemieux.
I definitely agree with you that the fight would have been better in 2016 because now it is over hyped and likely to not live up to all the buzz created. I guess the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight set a blueprint on how to sell a big fight, which unfortunately means fans lose out.
Amen on that Mayweather-Pacquiao fiasco. We definitely lost out.
Yeah I hear you, some good points. The longer that it takes to make the fight, sure it may make more money but the more it gives fans to make an excuse. But if it does happen in 2018 let's see then how Triple G looks in his next fight and see who Canelo fights before they make the fight. Or it may just happen this year. I still think they should've just did it last year. I'm just done waiting on this fight with the back and forth.
If they fight this year. Canelo need not worry.
Since he's at 160 now he definitely needs to fight the divisions best fighters. If he gets past Golovkin then:
Jacobs
Lemieux
Charlo
Eubank Jr
Saunders

To me it should have happened when he fought cotto and the winner earns the shot at him
In May of 2016, yeah it was supposed to happen that way. Instead of wasting a fight on little glass chin Khan. If Canelo needed a tune up to adapt to 160 I would've accepted that, but against a legit 160 pound fighter and then GGG of September last year.
But yeah we agree that it definitely should've happened last year. I thought it was going to happen after the Cotto fight. Then I was for sure that it would happen after the Khan fight, but...........SMH
This is true as well. A rematch definitely would've happened at some point if Canelo lost.
It should've just happened last year in September. That seems to be the theme that most of us agree on.

No bro I discredit him because this fight should have already happened and they just waited for ggg to get old we could have had at least a 2nd fight like Ward and kovo

Golovkin hasn't been in a lot of war so he has a lot of mileage left, but I think beating him at 39/40 is less impressive than beating him now. Remember that at 39 to 40 commentators will always mention the age and a loss is always followed by a comment like, "At 39/40 he just didn't have the goods..." and a win "he turned back the clock".
Hard to speculate because boxing age completely relates to how they're looking in other fights.
People are already going to discredit Canelo because of the Jacobs fight. So, no matter how good GG still is, they'll say he's past prime, unless GG were to go up and dominate 168 or something like that.
Personally, I predict that we've got another year and a half or so before we can say GG was definitely "past prime". However, Canelo should have taken this last year if he wanted full credit from the fans.

I think Golden Boy know this and it does indicate that they probably weren't that confident that they could have beaten him then.
To be fair though, the fight will be bigger now so they will make more money than what they would have in 2016. I think it's also worth pointing out that even if Golovkin has moved passed his prime, he is still close to it, whereas Canelo, based on his age, is about to come into his prime, so I think that a loss to Golovkin now would be worse because Canelo has moved closer to his prime while Golovkin has moved away from it. I don't think anyone would have criticised Canelo had he lost in 2016 but if he waits until 2019 or beyond he would not get much credit for a win but a lot of criticism for losing.
I see this fight happening in 2018 which would be smart for both guys.

Last year. Now it's just eh. It's so obvious that he waited for him to get old.
Well my thing is this. Honestly speaking a lot of people were/are claiming that Golden Boy and Oscar are waiting for Golovkin to age and get old before they put Canelo in there with him. Whether this is true or not is not what I'm getting at. It's just a matter of not giving Golovkin and his supporters, fans and also just people who say GBP is doing this on purpose an excuse to use as to why Golovkin lost to Canelo. That's why I say that the perfect time that this fight should've happened was September of last year 2016.
Because IMO I did see Golovkin starting to look a little slower and starting to get older in the Jacobs fight. And it has nothing to do with what Jacobs did. Because Jacobs fought a really good fight and he could've fought better if he was more aggressive. And it also isn't that the fight went 12 rounds. It's just what I saw from Triple G, he looked a little bit slower and had the look of a fighter who is in the very beginning stages of starting to age.
He still is good enough to beat Canelo. If Canelo beats G though, people will use the aging as an excuse. That's why the longer they wait to make this fight it does benefit Canelo because G is getting older.
Regardless of who's fault it is as far as who gets paid what and other stipulations. The longer it takes to make this fight, the more Canelo is going to benefit. So I do hope they make it this year finally.

Both guys are within their physical primes so this really shouldn't be an issue unless GGG's career suddenly takes a nosedive which I don't see happening. His lackluster showing in his last fight had more to do with Jacobs representing his first real challenge and he's probably come to rely on his power too much over the years. There wasn't really a strategy or flow behind his offense.
Hard to speculate because boxing age completely relates to how they're looking in other fights.

Exactly right, this fight should've happened last year in September to eliminate any possible excuses and for full credit to be given. I agree 100%
