Probably been a thread before but after watching the fight again it appears to me that 99.99999 percent of the f@#k up falls on Cortez and the other small portion falls on Ortiz for the dumbass headbutt and make up session. He wasn't even looking at the damn fight and still had them on a break. Any other referee would have disqualified Floyd right then and there or at the very least it's a No Contest. Victors dumbass blew it but it would have been interesting how that fight turned out. It's not like Floyd was dominating, it was actually shaping up to be a halfway decent fight.
Nah Floyd could always punch when he wanted to Ortiz simply got Floyd to a point where Floyd edged the line of being disqualified and threw a left hook right hand he sat down on unlike his latter career where he threw lobs to protect his hand, but here Floyd toed that DQ line, gave no ****s about a zero, and risk future millions by potentially damaging his hand with that nuke, he did it with no ****s given neither, Floyd might have strangled Ortiz post headbutt had there not been gloves on
Sticking to subject I'm not sure as far as Cortez goes if he signaled time in, sure was a half passed time in if I ever seen one....There is a reason this was his last match
Guys who can bang put dudes to sleep with a punch, Floyd always put me to sleep with his hug-a-thon style. lol
I agree with you about Cortez, he retired about 20 fights too late.
Cortez did signal "lets go" but that is not the proper instruction to resume fighting as he would have said in the fighter meeting.
He should have said "box" but he didn't.
Its kind of a grey area, but I think everyone can agree cortez did not belong in a ring refereeing fights after that.

It was shaping into a 10-2 for floyd fight or 9-3 tops. The way floyd was letting go of his hands in that fight, a stoppage won't be a surprised either considering Ortiz' mentality.
Cortez wasn't in control.
Legal shot by Floyd but pretty classless.
Good thing for Ortiz it was Floyd throwing the punch, any fighter who can bang sends Victor to the hospital and maybe the morgue.

Ortiz is an idiot. Protect yourself at all times.
Anyway, Ortiz didn't belong in the ring with Floyd in the first place. Crappy fight and Ortiz would've eventually quit in the later rounds.
Hell yeah I agree. He would have gotten frustrated and probably would have pulled a Oliver McCall and started crying saying he didn't want to fight anymore.
I'd love someone to show me when He signaled to box?
He was not paying attention, and was looking out of the ring
THANK YOU!!! That's the whole reason I started this thread people keep saying he signaled to box but damn I've watched it multiple times and I do not see where he signaled to box. If Cortez was honest with himself and everyone else he would say that he still had them on a break and was looking at the timekeeper letting him know he was about to restart the fight. Once he got knocked down Cortez didn't know what the hell to do and no way was he going to disqualify Floyd so his retarded ass just started the ten count. That's my take on what really happened.

Fvck off....cool?
i blame that **** to first and foremost:
1. the mental midget in ortiz(protect youself at all times)
2. joe cortez, a crappy ref
3. floyd, an opportunistic fighter
in that order that rules out the 2nd and 3rd..ortiz was just a dumbass
Agree, although I mostly blame the fighters. It was a legal cheap shot in my view.
This^^^^^^^^^
Ortiz finally started to have success, then headbutted like an idiot, then after he apologized like a bytch, ref restarted fight, idiot Ortiz looked to hug and apologize and Floyd lit him up.. dude even got rocked by the hook, and just looked at ref without putting up his hands.. he deserved to get knocked out..
I didn't see any real success Ortiz was having. I saw him swinging, not landing. Floyd smiling and then he got frustrated and torpedoed his head into Floyd's face.
There's no debate that Cortez signaled to fight, he clearly did. The real question is why Ortiz went for another embrace and apology after Cortez signaled to fight.
And just before the headbutt Ortiz finally had some momentum, prior to that it was all Floyd.

I saw an interview with Cortez (I think it was fairly recent) and he said after he signaled to fight he looked to make sure the time keeper saw because it was so loud and chaotic in the arena

This. Cortez signaled for them to fight and Ortiz approached Floyd with his hands down. It seems like Ortiz was so in his own world he didn't even hear Cortez's commands.
To the OP there wouldn't have been a no contest or a DQ. Floyd did what was within the rules while Ortiz did not.
