Watching last night's PBC fights, I couldn't help but notice how poor the refereeing was last night. I haven't been following boxing too closely for the last 6-8 months so maybe this is the norm nowadays. Here's my take:
Breazeale-Ugonoh - great heavweight scrap between two lower tiered fighters. Dom Breazeale is not the most agile, mobile and skilled fighter but he has always shown his grit, toughness and heart - he doesn't quit, and I like that about him. This is the first time i've seen Izu Ugonoh and he's a solid prospect that has a nice jab and throws good combinations and body punching.
This fight was great; it was back and forth HW action with big punches being landed and some good knockdowns. However, as Breazeale knocked Izu down the second time in the 5th round, the referee automatically waived the fight off without even assessing his condition. Watching the fight in real time, Izu look like he was OK and able to get up. However the ref never gain him the chance.
Hurd-Harrison - This was a good competitive fight where Harrison appeared to be winning the early-to-mid rounds based on his output and accurate punching. Credit to Hurd for making some adjustments and finding a way to land his much harder shots. He turned around the momentum of the fight, started walking Harrison down and pressing for the knockout.
Also, in this fight i thought the ref did a poor job. After being knocked down, Harrison beat the count, responded to the refs questions and looked able to fight on. Harrison then unintentionally or intentionally spit his mouth piece out to the consternation of the ref and the fight was called off. Why was this? Harrison should have been docked a point but not TKO'd.
Wilder-Washington - I've been a fan and apologist of Wilder's since he went pro but last night Deontay looked really awful. He was overly tentative and cautious and his punches looked constricted (maybe due to his muscular physique). Washington looked decent, to my surprise, but not any spectacular and there was never any doubt that Wilder would get his man outa there.
Of the 3 fights, this was the worse stoppage by far. Washington was buzzed but at no point was he helpless or defenseless. Given that this was a title fight, Washington should have been allowed to fight on and survive the round. It was a total overreaction to stop this fight at that point.
Thoughts/opinions? Am I totally off the mark or just in my criticism?
i didnt see hurd harrisson but the others were both good stoppages.
washington was hurt bad, he didnt punch back or clinch. just stood there and let wilder windmill punches at him, many of which landed sending his body rocking all over the place.
if you look at that clip and say thats intelligently defending yourself i dont even know what to say
ugonoh was done too.
again, after getting caught with the first shot that hurt him he didnt throw a single punch, he didnt try to clinch, or move or.. anything..
you cant get rocked, just stand there and expect the ref to let you continue. if you want the fight to continue, you have to fight. now, if the shots are not landing, fair enough. but if you are being lit up with shots, badly hurt and you are not showing the ref you have any answer. its his job to stop it.
its about how you react. both ugonoh and washington froze, put up no resistance and the referees had to save them.

His pride wouldn't let him admit he couldn't continue, so he spit the mouthpiece out (intentionally) after he realised the ref was going to allow him to continue. Also, as one poster already said there was not much protesting afterwards.
You are a ****ing idiot.

It clearly shows that Washington was completely out on his feet, could not stand under his own power, and the ropes were the only thing that stopped him from falling out of the ring and seriously injuring himself.
You honestly should be banned for being so ****ing stupid.
You know that's not what happened but you typed it any way.
Wow, tell me how you really feel. Look dude that is how I felt when I responded.
Later on I saw where Washington's trainer felt the stoppage was good. I'm not going to argue with him.
Can I still post now?
LOL, f*ck off, seriously f*ck off. Just think, one moment, throughout boxing history the number of fighters who were staggered but regained control and had success and won their fights or were very competitive?
It's part of boxing, a fighter gets knocked down, gets staggered - but you give the fighter the benefit of doubt and allow them to clinch, fight back, survive and to regain control. Watch some of Evander Holyfield's fights back in the 90s. He was always getting staggered and looked unsteady. He was able to comeback and win a lot of those fights.
Dude, Washington & his trainer had no problems with the stoppage. The fight was clearly over.
Oh and LOL at you using Holyfield as a example since he was commentating last night & we could barley understand what he was saying. Maybe the ref's SHOULD HAVE stopped those fights that he was staggered in.
I had no problem with the first 2 stoppages and thought the ref did the right thing.
I felt the Wilder stoppage was bad. Too early and felt to me like ref was told to stop it if Washington was even slightly hurt.

I agree with you completely. There's just been too many poor/early stoppages in the sport altogether.
My take on stoppages is like with football - at some point you have to stop thinking safety first and remember that these are grown men who made a concious decision to make a living as an athlete in a contact sport/combat sport. LET THE MEN FIGHT!
read the posts above your's, don't really have anything else to add. :thumbsdow
him winning the fight up to hat point has nothing to do with him taking flush shots and no throwing anything back vs the hardest puncher
A good indication that there was a bad stoppage is body language and reaction. If the opponents did not protest, and instead admitted defeat, then we as fans should not react for them.
Washington did well, and his trainer is on record having no issues with the stoppage, and Washington simply said he was caught and will take it as experience. From what I saw, it was an okay stoppage and all parties were fine with the stoppage.
HEs not wrong tho did you watch the vid? Plus add in he's facing probably the hardest puncher in the game. It was a fine stoppage.
Not sure how yours think Washington had anything left he wasn't even throwing back

Also, based on your threshold this epic fight would have been stopped:

he's just an angry fanboy, don't bother with logic or facts with him.
IF washington lost every round, was hurt on several other occasions, had ZERO success then the stoppage would be slightly less bad and there would be less complaints.
The Fact Washington had won practically every round negates this point.
The fanboy logic these days is, whenever there is a bad stoppage. they all become nostradamus.
' yeah but...he would of got stopped anyways'
like there has never been a boxer in the history of the sport that has come back from 1,2 or even 3 KD's....
Let's just stop every fight after a guy get's hurt eh?
total spastics the lot of em.
and i guarantee you they are the same guy's that offer exuses about why a guy with nearly 40 fights is still fighting bum's...
pathetic.
You are a ****ing idiot.

The last shot Wilder landed squarely on Washington's face also would have knocked him down if not for the ropes his feet went out and fell backwards into the ropes which propped him up.
He was trapped going toward the corner and Wilder would have continued to tee off against someone that was defenseless at that point.
You didn't address the merits of my argument and instead offered nothing but personal attacks.
Which is the same as admitting that you know I'm right.
I'm not angry. I'm not a fanboy. This is my job. I couldn't care less what you think about me. Attack my argument or concede. You chose to concede. You were just too stupid to know it.
lol
you: ' you stupid ****ing **** **** you!!! ****ing ****!!!! '
me: wow you angry :lol1:

None of them were questionable homey couldn't even get up for the count in the first bout, Harrison went down clean and didn't want to continue he went strait to the hospital, and Washington was falling over and the ref had to grab him, all great work by the refs we don't want these guys getting additional brain damage , live to fight another day.
