In between rounds 2 and 3, in an attempt to uplift his wounded fighter, the great Virgil Hunter used his exceptional motivational skills to get his fighter back on track. "Robinson got up, Ali got up, Leonard got up..now YOU got up"
Getting up off the canvas and finishing a fight courageously is something that has generated praise among the boxing public for centuries. We saw Juan Manuel Marquez get up off the canvas 3 times in the first round against Manny Pacquiao and fight his way to a draw (although some felt he won). We've seen Naseem Hamed get up off the canvas against Kevin Kelley 3 times and score a KO. Frazier was knocked down several times before being stopped against Foreman. Hearns was knocked down several times before being KO'd against Hagler.
These are just a handful of examples and I purposely included both victories and defeats as you can still show heart and determination; even in defeat.
Against one of the most feared fighters and hardest punchers in boxing, Andre Ward lifted himself off the canvas and fought well enough to bag enough rounds to pull out the victory.
Why isn't Ward getting the same praise for his courageous effort (whether you feel he won or lost) like the great fighters of the past?
Hes boxer lol
and also id be super pissed if hes not courageous in boxing match against the number 1 LightHeavyweight n top 5 p4p figther, i have him easily top 3 n that says a lot in boxing specially now days lol
I think u got easily trolled lol
Why Doesn't Andre Ward Get Praised for His Courageous Effort Against The Krusher?
For the same reason why Kovalev will never get credit for his boxing skills when people were saying Ward gonna school slow and limited eurobum, saying that KO is the only way Kovalev can win this fight. It doesn't matter that he outboxed tricky Chilemba and Hopkins and that this fight with Ward was close, he's still a limited stiff brawler
Because he acted and is continuing to act like a little b1tch.
Seriously, he's a great fighter who proved he has a ton of heart, and his family story is very sweet. But when he starts talking about his career, promotion, etc he comes off as an ungrateful, entitled prick that you want to choke with a belt.
He showed unbelievable heart, i personally thought he was done after the 2nd round, he proved himself to be a true warrior in that fight even if you think Kovalev should have got the decision...it was close and the result was debateable but the heart shown by Ward was not.
Ward went up a division and fought one of the most feared fighters in the sport, got up from a bad knockdown and showed tremendous heart to battle back into the fight and still gets hated on.
Tough battle to win you guys on Boxingscene over that's for sure :D
Great post. Impartial and unbiased boxing fans are a rarity nowadays. Nice to see that some of us still exist. People can't put their emotions aside and appreciate skilled and courageous efforts in the ring.
Other than the first three rounds it was a pretry uneventful and somewhat dull fight.
The other fights you mentioned the other guy came back and did serious physical damage which might be why they were praised. It's also easier to sympathize with a fighter who gets knocked out if their showing heart and fighting back, at least from personal opinion.
Outlanded, dropped, and you are supposed to "take" the belts from the resident champ and the majority of people don't think he did that. Your poll choices are funny though, looks like they could have been provided by CNN.
because he lost and wont honor the rematch clause that's in the contract.he wants to retire that's a punk move.good thing that duva has the rematch clause if they didn't ward would never rematch kovalev on his own.
I don't think he deserves ridicule unless he doesn't honour the rematch clause. He doesn't want to take less money than he got for the first fight but he was overpaid for that fight; therein lies the problem. If he hasn't rematched Kovalev by the end of this year then it's justifiable for people to be mad at him but people calling him a b*tch and a p*ssy are laughable - he got into the ring with Kovalev in the first place ffs!
threatening to retire after the fight is a great place to start. that's not conduct befitting a great boxer in his prime.
calling a guy who put you down hard and arguably handed you your first loss a "frontrunner" doesn't help, either. more experts thought kovalev won that fight than ward. mysefl and basically everybody else in the building was expecting kovalev to get that decision.
ward;s a great fighter and he's a likely hall of famer, but FFS the guy deserves a lot of the attitudes people have toward him because of his conduct otside fo the ring.
Why didn't you praise Khan when he fought Canelo? Or Brook when he fought Golovkin? They were ridiculed, instead.
There was also Joselito Lopez moving up at a moment's notice and faced Canelo. Who else?
What's so special about Ward moving up when he himself admitted he can no longer make 168?
I did praise Khan. I ****ted on Canelo. How about we get our facts straight before trying to stage an attack on the PBP.

TO most people, this miraculous adjustment was not apparent. The latter rounds were close, and I had kovalev winning a few of them HANDILY.
His fans are making up an adjustment that didn't really happen. Most people in the boxing world also though Krusher was robbed.
The only thing to praise is Krusher, who should be undefeated.
Your poll choices are all biased towards Ward. That "win" was questionable, & now Ward's talk of possibly NOT facing Kovalev in a rematch is worthy of ridicule, not praise.
well then, maybe kovalev should get praised for his courageous effort against blake caparello. unlike ward, he came back from the knockdown and DEFINITELY won the fight.
Caparello is not a top 3 P4P fighter and top 3 LHW, or a puncher, or dangerous in anyway.
You can't compare Kovalev getting up from a Caparello KD to Ward getting up from a Kovalev KD.
Just like you can't compare JMM surviving the 1st round of his first fight with Pacquiao with something like Cotto surviving the Corley KD and coming back to destroy him. Completely different fighters you have to survive. Oh, Kovalev survived Caparello? Not exactly a feat respond with.
because he lost and wont honor the rematch clause that's in the contract.he wants to retire that's a punk move.good thing that duva has the rematch clause if they didn't ward would never rematch kovalev on his own.
I think most people thought Ward did pretty good and showed heart and skills.
But most people also thought he lost the fight and most people are sick of him whining about being a victim.
It was a 50/50 fight, I gave the edge to Ward, but wouldn't have been upset if they gave the fight to Kovalev. Does Kov get praised for going against the almighty "son of God" Ward?
