His personality just seems quite boring compared to Floyd what made Oscar such a big draw
maybe being mexican-american
but he also was in a few classic matches where Floyd really hasn't been in any all like that.
also he fought everyone during their prime where some would argue that Floyd didn't.
not dissing Mayweather, if anything its cause he was so dominating beside the 2 or so close matches he had. plus in the casual perspective he wasn't very fun to watch and his views he got through the years had more to do with people wanting to see him lose because of the bad-boy image he created during his bout with ODLH.
but at the end of the day Floyd got the records (most ppv buys) so it doesn't matter.
Because he was truly an ATG talent. Great chin, size, speed, stength, footwork, ring IQ..could go on and on.
He became a star when he one the Gold in the Olympics. Both winning gold and his backstory of losing his mom made everyone in the sports world recognize him.
He was managed very well in the professional scene. Really grew into his role as one of the best boxers on the planet.
I also wondered why. He can dictate all the terms in a contract simply because he will be his opponents' biggest payday.
And yeah he fought everyone mostly at their prime.
One thing I won't fault Oscar for and give him props is he fought everyone , never ducked no one thats a big reason why he became popular too.he did duck vernon forest doe
Mostly he was willing to fight anyone. Just like Hearns, Leonard, Duran, Hagler, Holmes. Not look for reasons not to make big fights or make dumb weight demands or far fetched purse demands or other dumb shyte. He was the goods and his team knew it so they weren't afraid to make the big fights.

and for this reason, many people hated him as well, minus the olympic gold medal, IMO.

1992 Barcelona Olympics was probably the most successful Olympics from the 90's! and Oscar De La Hoya captured the Gold Medal at those games! The value of a Olympic Gold medal in boxing still has massive appeal to promoters and even corroborate sponsors (Who usually don't bother sponsoring athletes in boxing, compared to other individual sports).......So it was a combination of his amateur success, his good looks and being a Mexican american fighter! (Mexicans always have massive fan bases compared to African America's or White American's).....African American's and White American's have to prove themselves more in my opinion! before the american people take interest...
great young boxer with a great left hook and a million dollar smile. got a big push and proper management early in his career. had exciting fights and he fought everyone.
mexican
really great opponent at or around his weight
and dat left hook!
Most popular amateur champion since Ray Leonard. He could box and liked to fight too. He could speak without saying "man" every other word and didn't cuss every three words. He could be promoted to all media's without problems. A promoters dream and he could fight!
