Take it back to the Traditional Eight.
Same argument used when it comes to Law. People try to make justice better by adding more and more laws until, eventually, there's way too many f*cking laws and you need an expert to be able to tell you what's what.
Boxing is already a joke to some. Boxers, supposed warriors, arguing over several lbs of weight. The Gayemaker may be an idiot but he got in the ring with Valuev, and serves as a good example in that respect.
If anything boxing can get rid of few lower level weight classes.. 122, 126 130, 135 --> 4-5lbs separates each division. Take one big sh1t or eat a Burger King Meal & you are in a another weight class..
Actually, we could get rid of Junior Middleweight. Seems like a useless division.
Middleweight 150 - 160
Welterweight 140 - 150
And the rest could stay the same.
At this point, it's just putting lipstick on a pig. Divisions are a mess and watered down - they need a full overhaul.
Which will never happen, of course.
If it's said that a 215 lb. man should be able to beat a 265 lb. man, then the argument could be made that Ward and Kovalev should be able to take on the cruiserweight division.
I wouldn't mind seeing less divisions, but the downside is that more boxers might quit the sport due to feeling disadvantaged.
Eddie Chambers wasn't comfortable at cruiserweight but always seemed too small for the big heavyweights.
Instead of creating new ones or merging old ones, I like the idea of expanding the limits of the upper divisions.
Super Middleweight: 160 - 175
Light Heavyweight: 175 - 195
Cruiserweight: 195 - 220
Heavyweight: 220+
Problem with doing that is we take away a long lasting tradition of those existing ones that are steeped with so much history of legendary fighters.
I'd be more for keeping those ones and just getting rid of the ones that are like 4-5lbs to the next division.
Oh yeah, I mean from Minimum to Light Fly, to Fly and Super Fly, there are 4 divisions in the range of 10 lbs. That's excessive. I realize at that size, weight plays a big factor, but still, that's absurd. So I think we're both on the same page, it's time a lot of these divisions rode off into the sunset.
And I hear your argument that stretching the weight classification alters the legacy of some prolific fighters, but remember, a lot of the legends of this sport guys fought back before we had "Light" and "Super" weight classes. So we've already devalued the prestige of some of these weight classes. I mean look at Cruiser, that was introduced in the late 70's. Super Middle came in the mid 80's. We're talking about modifying some weight classes that are younger than some of the posters on this forum. If you wanted to keep LHW where is was, fine, there is legacy there...but you could shift Cruiserweight without it being a huge loss to boxing's history.
What about instead of adding a new division, we stretch the range of a couple...
Heavyweight goes to 220+
Cruiser becomes 220
Light Heavy is 195
Super Middle becomes 175
Middle remains at 168

The super division have little sense either when they have like only 7lbs separating them and sometimes even less than 7lbs, I wont complain when there is a big gap in the weight class.
200-220
This gives the guys on the shorter side of 6ft a proper chance because most of your Wladimir Klitschko, Anthony Joshuas etc are 6ft6 - 6ft9 and weighing 250lbs
If we were to lose a few super divisions to make this possible I'd welcome it.

steve cunningham, a former cruiserweight without remarkable punching power, dropped tyson fury hard and could have had him out if he was a finisher.
it's inaccurate to say that these guys are insurmountably large. the division is just garbage, sot heir size is an insurmountable advantage against the out of shape and unskilled HW division in 2017.
i don'tt hink so. joe louis would knock prime wlaidmir out of his boxing boots. lamon brewster did the same thing only weighing around 220ish lbs. louis was a 15 round fighter and extremely lean at 205-210. he and brewster had virtually identitcal height and reach. brewster jiggled a bit to the tune of probably 5-10 lbs.
in other words, louis and brewster are damn near the same size. louis hit harder, with more accuracy, and a heck of a lot more setup and craft. he'd walk into a fight against wladimir and wilder at 205 lbs and knock those teeth out.
Last thing boxing needs is another weight division.

I'd be for this idea, it gives people like Haye, Povetkin those guys who are just about 6ft and aren't as big of a build as an Anthony Joshua a fair chance.
Let the super freaks fight their own kind, it wont happen but it would be good to see it made.
The reason why the heavyweight division is the best division, in the entire history of the sport! is because it has a vast range of body types, that compete against each other and all of these physiques have had their success! if this dynamic was to be change right now! we would lose the prestige an spectacle that the heavyweight division is....
Therefore the idea of a separate heavyweight class is silly.
I think with 4 "world" titles considred equal, we don't need to water down the competition within divisions we already have.. Way too much opportunities for fighters to maneuver and pick easier opportunities.
With 1 champion/division, though - I wouldn't necessary mind what Issac Clarke suggested:
Lower CW back to 190lb and stick another division 190-210/215.
Jump from 175-200 is indeed quite a big one. 175->190->205 would probably be more fair, giving some fighters opportunity to compete in best weight-division for his body frame.
..but, again - not with the stupid 4 belts system that is in place.
