Ward fans who are kidding themselves that this was even close cannot see the contradiction of their only argument. "There were simply two many close rounds to call it a robbery".
Lets take aside if kovalev was the challenger, he definitely should have got the belts.

If it was as close as some of you are saying, how did ALL three get 114 113. The probability of that is neigh impossible especially as you claim that there were many close could have gone either way. Sure you would have a wide range of scores if that were to be the case?
Thoughts?
Dunno. From my perspective, Ward lost 1-6 absolutely. The tossup rounds were 8-11 in my book.
So that's 6 rounds for Kovalev already, one of which had a knockdown.
I gave Ward 12. I felt he did just enough in all but round 11. That's 5 rounds.
The only other round, even if you gave it to Ward, it doesn't matter because of the knockdown.
The problem is that people actually were giving Ward rounds in the first half and I frankly don't see why. He wasn't doing anything but getting caught with jabs all night long!
good post....
I'm telling you, I watched the fight in HD. Ward was getting schooled until round 7.
I didn't see it "one round close" at all BECAUSE of the knockdown. Had that not happened, then I can easily see a 114-113 score. But it did happen.
Well said. Good post.

Go back and check out the 5th round. Gotta give that one to Ward. Kovalev only takes one after the 7th, making the 3rd the divider. The 3rd is an important one. Anyways, you agree with me that this fight was as close as they come right? So either man could've won and I'd be happy, but I thought for once, the judges had it right. As you can see I am a Kovalev fan, but Ward was clawing his way back, it already started in the 3rd. Everythingg leads back to the 3rd. I don't like Ward, but damn I respect him, especially after tonight. Always thought he was the real deal, didn't expect him to be so strong mentally to pull a comeback off like that.
Round 10 is a dead giveaway. The judges knew if they scored that one for Kovalev, Ward couldn't win. It was one of the easiest rounds to score and they gave it to Ward. Kovalev got screwed.
Exactly no matter what people say almost if not everybody would agree round 10 was for Kov. Judges knew they could not let that happen.
They can think whatever they want. At the end of the day, Kov should've done more in the 2nd half of the fight to make sure Ward had no chance of winning the fight.
They can cry all they want. Ward will take him to school in the rematch.
If he does, then that's that. Doesn't mean he won this fight; he certainly did not.
Well no, your entire post is mistaken. I guess people really view the tape differently but there's also a poll here on NSB where the clear majority say Kovalev won and the general outcry about the result you cannot just deny or brush off as 'nonsense'. A lot of observers view this as a robbery.

Kovalev 116 Ward 111
LOL. Stop blaming Ward and the judges. Nobody had a problem that the judges are American before the fight and now the fans and Kovalev has a problem now. ***** ass Kovalev complaining about a robbery in the post fight interview when he only has himself to blame. Why go into a fight with three American judges?
Kovalev should've done more in the 2nd half of the fight. He only has himself to blame for even allowing Ward to get into the fight and make it close. Was it Ward's fault Kovalev got tired and his punches had no impact on Ward in the 2nd half of the fight? Ward was landing the better punches and his punches had more behind them than Kovalev.
The fight was only close because of the KD. Take away the KD and Ward clearly wins the fight. Ward outboxed him after the 5th round. A couple of the early rounds go to Ward.

Kellerman put it best when he said it wasn't a bad decision, it was the type of decision where ward was just given every round he could possibly be given. It's rare for all 3 judges to go that way in a fight where rounds were close...but it is what it is. This was not a robbery...a bit of a gift maybe. As soon as the scores were announced, i knew it was going to ward. I scored it 115-112 kovalev..114-113 the other way is not too far off, but i just find it hard to score 7 rounds for ward.
The decision stinks of cookery, the way all 3 American judges gave 7 rounds to Ward, convenient when calculating the KD too.

exactly how i had it.. 9 COULD have gone to kov, maybe even 3.. anyone saying robbery dksab and expected kov to win because hes a big strong man and ward has more bruises
Yes, you said it, and that scorecard showed it. Close fight, could've gone either way, I'd been happy.

I scored the fight exactly as this image (or I think I did):

For the record, this was the average of 200 users scoring the fight.
Stop reaching with this decision. I box, and I'm a bigger fan of Kovalev. True that I did bet on Ward, but that's because coming into the fight I expected him to win a close fight by decision. It was a close fight, probably closer than even Thurman-Porter, but it is what it is. This result definitely does warrant a rematch, imo.

I had it 114-113 too, must be some kind of conspiracy.
It's just 3 professional judges, not 200 people all giving the same scores. I thought only a couple of rounds were hard to score, the rest were either clear or close but still clear enough.
For so-called boxing fans the amount of stupidity (paid judges, fixed fights) and ridiculous scoring (Kovalev winning 8-4 or 9-3 as some are saying) on this forum is unreal.
Problem is if he only took over starting with the 7th, that's 5 rounds max he could have won.
Add the knockdown, you get to an 8-4 win for Kovalev.
No because the first 7 rounds were something like 5-2 for Kovalev. Ward won 3rd and 5th (or maybe 6th, one of those) Kovalev could've taken the 10th too - 114-113 Ward

Exactly, at best ward split the rounds 7 onwards. He improved from 7 rounds onwards, but no way did he win every single round. He lost the first 5/6.
Ita impossible that kovalev lost this match, mathematically and physically.
Wards got outladed every round pretty much, plus kovalev landed the more effective strikes.
Its fact that kovalev won this fight.
My point is to the ward nuthuggers who claim that there are so many hard to score, close rounds, okay, lets say there were, how do you get all three score cards exactly the same. You would have a wide range of scoring due the the close nature. The odds of all three judges getting 114 113 on a "extremely close fight" is incredibly rare. The fact that All three judges saw it in the minority range and scored it exactly the same is a very far stretch.
Not really. 3 judges thought Ward won 7 and Kova 5, so that's how the scoring worked out. That's all there is to it.
Close fight, could've gone either way. Still I had it excact like the judges. 114-113. Ward really took over after the 7th.
I don't see how anybody can score it a robbery, unless they fell asleep after 3.
Ward made Kovalev look one dimensional in the second half of the fight.
Kovalev didn't adjust, he was aimlessly being led around the ring by Ward and getting pot shotted on the inside. He didn't look comfortable or in control. Ward at least looked like he was executing his gameplanq with success, more so than Sergey.
I'd like to see a rematch, but I think Ward will win easier next time round. It's always the way with smart, skilled boxers like Ward, you generally only get one chance to shock them, as when they've figured you out it's child's play for them.
