The people who thought Ward would win thought he'd outbox Kovalev clearly, but that didn't happen. Kovalev steadily outboxed Ward while Ward retreated last night.
Those scorecards were in before the fight started.
People say "Ward figured him out," did he?! Because it's the exact opposite, IMO. From the opening bell Kovalev is the one that controlled everything, but the key is those later rounds where people say "you must of missed Wards body shots"
No, I didn't miss the 3 body shots per round that Ward landed. Now tell me how many combinations Ward landed in those rounds? I legit don't think Ward landed more then one two punch combination. He landed some body shots and a couple jabs and thats it. Meanwhile, while Ward landed body shots, Kovalev continued to snap his head back, land his own body shots, and throw and land combinations.
Rewatch the fight with no HBO commentary and you'll see Kovalev clearly winning even the rounds Max was saying Ward did. Max was terrible and he may have blinded judgement to viewers. Every time he was going crazy for Wards body shots, Kovalev would come back with a laser beam jab and stun Ward multiple times.
Absolute farce of a fight. Kovalev got robbed by these corrupt judges plain and simple.
Kovalev had Ward figured out early, AND it carried over in the later rounds, wtf, you guys talking about body shots. BODY SHOTS!?!?!? It was like 3 per round and thats all he did. Body shots stopped Ward from getting washed- but they did not win him rounds or the fight.
Kovalev punished Ward throughout the fight and more often, Ward was in survival mode and did not outbox anything, he was surviving!!! Wow, I literally can't believe this. I've been crying all night and watching Kovalev highlight videos, I'm stunned. Literally stunned that these punk ass judges just robbed Kovalev of everything.
Kovalev #1 P4P and it ain't even close.

Oh and, if you rewatch the fight, you'll see a clear Kovalev victory.
I rewatched it this morning and its literally impossible to not give Kovalev 6 rounds.
If this fight is ANYWHERE else in the world, Kovalev wins by at least 3 rounds.
Kovalev put on a boxing clinic. Ward merely survived, espcially in the later rounds. Kovalev won this fight.

Ward did a number on Kov's body which is why Kov couldn't finish the job. Those body shots are going unknown as people just tend to focus on head shots.
The only thing I hope is the rematch is not on PPV but realistically the rematch should net each at least $5 mil and I don't know how you can do that unless its on PPV.
Oh, you KNOW it will be PPV! This is the age of making money, while not necessarily giving the fans their money's worth! I think this particular rematch will be worth the money though.
I really can't see how anyone could have scored that for Ward.
I actually couldn't believe Kovalev was outsmarting Ward at certain points in that fight.
With that said.....boxing has gone to sh1t when we keep getting results like this.
The final result with the controversial decision is a great set up for a block-buster rematch. This is entertainment for us and a money maker for them. Barkley's for the rematch, baby!! :boxing:

Part of the problem is lederman. He is older than the guys scoring. Just like they may need younger judges, hbo may need a younger scorer.
You have every right to be upset. You know I had Ward, you know I don't particularly like Kov and I'm glad to see guys like Freedom whine and cry. I still had kov winning a close close fight.
I'd like to see the rematch on the east coast.

Personally I think Kov got fatigued trying to stop Ward working on the inside. As the fight went on he looked more desperate and Ward had more success on the inside. With that I think Kov was more wary of committing and cutting the ring off through fear of the fight moving close again. The body shots were definitely getting to him
Kovalev was very dominant on the outside for me. That surprised me actually. I know how good Kov is but i didnt expect him to be that in control when the fight was long, he was drawing counters and countering them ffs. This isnt a normal brawler/power puncher. His jab is also sensational.
Im not normally a fan of instant rematches, but this fight I want to see again. Hell I wish the first one was 15 rnds.
Kovalev was really good on the outside, I didn't expect that either.
I think after he timed Ward coming in with the right hand and dropped him Ward was very wary and tentative to throw the right hand and it worked massively in Kovalev's favour in the first 6.
I don't think Ward expected to be hit as much with the jab either.
Yes he should he was the aggressor landing power shots to jabs... Take the blinkers off he was landing more in mostly all the damn rounds some of you are scoring jabs as a damn power shot in what world do you live in?
I don't have blinkers on as I was rooting for Kovalev as I'm a Kovalev fan and not a Ward fan.
I'm just simply not biased and admit what was clearly a very close either way fight.
Kovalev didn't really land that many power shots after the 2nd round.
In the second half of the fight, Ward did a great job of controlling the distance, frustrating Kovalev and did really good body work. That's what gave him the advantage in the second half on most cards. I only scored Kovalev the 10th in the last 6 but I could see other rounds going to him though because a lot of those rounds were close aswell.
Kovalev let Ward back into the fight and that was his mistake.
Or maybe Ward negated him?
I find the rematch more interesting to see who makes the best adjustments.

Why do boxing fans ****ing moan all the time? We finally got a great match up and it was a decent high level fight on the night. It could of gone either way, Ward got it, GET OVER IT.
The champion definitely shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt.
Neither should Kovalev be given the close rounds because he was the aggressor.
In many of the rounds, both were negating each other and little effective work was landing which is the main reason the fight was so close. The rounds were generally hard to score after the 2nd round.

You're not Bias though right? That is kinda a problem with you idiots on this forum who act your shoe size and not your age. NOBODY BELIEVES YOU because we all know who is so Bias on this forum. I respect the opinions of people who I know are not Bias which is only like 1% of the people on this forum but the rest of you who spent months sucking off Kovalev nobody will have sympathy for you what so ever
I had it a Draw with Kovalev looking dominating the first 3 Rounds or so but then Ward coming back strong the second half of the fight with good body work and a big round 5 I think it was. The fight was close, nobody "DOMINATED" anything for 12 Rounds!
Yeah I keep seeing people complaining about the scoring for the second half of the fight. They say Ward was handed the decision after being unfairly given all rnds 6-12. The way I see it if Ward needed every single round in the second half to get a 1 point win the scoring in the first half must have been very favourable to Kovalev.
I thought the fight was close throughout with Ward picking up a few early rounds and Kov picking up some late. Overall the KD swayed it on my card

I agree Kovalev clearly won the fight. I had GGG 1st, Kovalev 2nd and Ward 9th PFP going into the fight. GGG has never lost and I see no reason to remove him from first place as Kovalev beat Ward but GGG has never even come close to losing or having a draw. If GGG doesn't shine in his fight with Jacobs I'll place Kovalev at number 1 PFP. Until then I've got GGG 1st, Kovalev remains 2nd and Ward climbs to 7th for putting up a good fight. Pound for pound is just opinion based and can't be proven right or wrong so if you have Kovalev 1st PFP that's fine with me.
I'd just keep Roman Gonzalez as the number one I wouldn't personally put Ward in the top 10 I think Kovalev badly exposed him as a limited fighter who relies too heavily on foul play clinching, wrestling, hitting after the breaks I'm not at all impressed.
Roman Gonzalez
Gennady Golovkin
Sergey Kovalev
Saul Alvarez
Denis Lebedev
Carl Frampton
Keith Thurman
Terence Crawford
Guillermo Rigondeaux
Erislandy Lara
Scoring close rounds to the guy who is only really throwing jabs and looking to move on the backfoot and clinch?
I don't see it, close rounds should be awarded to the aggressor the guy making the fight and arguably the champion should get the benefit of the doubt but those close rounds weren't so close when you compare power punches landed, power punch counts more than one or two flashy jabs.
