OK - there's a case to be made for both but as a hypothetical two fighters fight the same opposition, one scores 30KOs after more or less dominant performances - losing some rounds maybe, another scores 30 shutout (or near shutout) UDs.
Which impresses you more?
Mmmmm. I was hoping it wouldn't be taken that way - maybe I could have phrased it differently or better. As a matter of fact, although some of my favourite fighters are guys with high KO ratios, in the hypothetical scenario I presented I consider the guy who shows the fewest weaknesses - the Shutout guy - to have impressed more in many ways. Probably he'd be my winning pick if the two were to meet in fight #31.
As I said, no offense, everybody is entitled to his/her opinion.
The hypothetical scenario quoted above differs from your original question though. In this scenario, I may pick the shutout guy as well, but I wouldn't necessarily be more impressed by his win. In fact, I would be more impressed if the KO guy was able to KO the shutout guy, despite the defensive skills of the latter.
My point exactly. I think this question was just brought up to justify certain boxers' claim to greatness.

Basically who is more impressive, ward or kovalev lol
Ha ha ha Actually it wasn't - but yeah I can see how it looks - the 30 fights number I just pulled out of my ass, but it might have been there cos I have been thinking about Ward and Kovalev a fair bit recently. No actually the thread was a counterpoint to Larrys Defense vs Power thread which I felt was designed to elicit a particular response. If I had anyone in mind I wanted to keep it to myself to avoid slanting the responses, it is genuinely meant as a hypothetical question - but it wasn't Ward or Kovalev. Honestly. :D

the guy who knocked out the 30 guys while losing a few rounds here and there is definitely more impressive to me than the guy who UD'd those same 30 guys without losing any rounds.

Dude i know right. The internet is full of people who love to say they prefer long drawn out fights. But in all honesty they want to see the guy the support knock out thier opponet.
You missing the point of the question. The question is what impresses you more? A KO or a Shutout. And the answer is simple.
No fan goes into a fight wanting it to go the distance. Yes a fight going the distance can be amazing. but no one before the first bell WANTS IT TO GO THE DISTANCE. not the fans and not the fighters.
So obviously then KOs impress fans more because all of them do not want the fight to go the distance.
And anyone who tells you different is a Liar.

The point I was making is that 12 round fights can be the most exciting fight there can be. No KO's are needed. You just watch in awe as the fight swings back and forth with you not wanting it to be over.
It has nothing to do with being a "hipster fan".

Going into those fights where you thinking "Gee I hope this goes the distance" or were you hoping that there was going to be a kock out.
Those fights were great but not a damn person was hoping it went the distance going into it.
Quit deluding yourself and trying to be a "Hipster fan"

So Gatti/Ward Barrera/Morales1 and Bowe/Holyfield1 were boring for you?
If so, you're the only so called boxing fan who's said anything like that where those fights are concerned.

This post is like asking why people watch nascar. For the left turns or the wrecks. And if anyone says the left turns they are lying to themselves and the world. Same applies here.

Just as long as both sets of fights are active, with enough punches thrown and landed, i'm good.
I hate fighters like Crawford who run while not landing any punches throughout the rounds. Just pot-shotting. Now that's boring.
It really depends on the opponent you are facing..
If you are facing a top quality opponent then shut out is a classic display of dominance than KO.. But it's a medium level opponent then I'd expect a KO
Look at that Crolla guy completely outboxed in his last two fights but the former he managed to overcome the Latino with power against Linares his power shots were ineffective. Boxing skills at the highest level are far superior to power.
Timing beats speed.
A shutout that eventually results in a KO in the later rounds is most impressive. Think Ali-Foreman and Mayweather-Corrales. But in the hypothetical question you're asking, the answer I think lies in the different variables to it - If the KO artist is blessed with a great deal of power but gets his ass kicked for several rounds until he eventually lands those few big shots needed to win, then that's clearly less impressive than the more technically sound fighter who completely schools his opponents for 12 rounds straight. But if both fighters have the exact same level of punching power and neither is any stronger or weaker than the other, not even by an iota, then the KO artist is definitely more impressive because it must mean he's penetrating his opponents' defense and hitting far more significant shots for them to gradually add up to a KO victory rather than a UD.
In general though, I'll always prefer KO's. They're more entertaining, more definitive, and just leave a bigger impression on people's minds. A UD happens because the timer runs out and it's the only way to determine a winner. A KO means someone actually finished the fight.
No offense, but people who voted for "shutout" are fooling themselves.
All other things equal (i.e., for the same match-up), the KO win is ALWAYS better.
Mayweather fans, please don't tell me you would not have been more impressed if Mayweather had knocked Pac or Canelo out.
Canelo fans, please don't tell me you would have preferred a shutout UD win against Khan over the KO.
Fury fans, don't tell me you would not have preferred a KO win against Wlad over the decision.
NOBODY watches a fight thinking "Oh I just hope the guy I am rooting for doesn't win by KO, but wins a clear UD instead".
