Cotto is currently at 40-5 (33KO's) he may fight again but I don't think the person he fights will bring any extra kudos to his resume. So we could hypothetical discuss his standing as an ATG, we know he will be inducted into the HOF, but where does he stand in regards to the upper echelon of boxing?
Career accomplishments: 4 weight world champion (1 lineal belt), 19-5 (17KO's) with 2 stoppage losses in World title fights, making 14 successful defenses of his belts (1 at MW, 2 at JMW, 5 at WW, 6 at JWW).
Notable Wins: Post Prime Martinez, Green Malinaggi, Mosley, Post Prime Margarito, Quintana, Torres, who's meh Corley, Clottley (heard some say it was a pick em fight I thought clottley nicked it but it's been a while), Foreman AKA Bambi, Judah the rest are meh.
I personally think he's fairly overrated his resume warrants HOF status, but not ATG status. His run at MW at JMW were farce, so in turn 2 of divisional titles are meaningless if nothing was achieved after winning the belts. His run at WW and JWW were good. But is that enough to warrant ATG status?
Discuss..... :boxing:
I wouldn't put cotto in atg status nor Odlh. Cotto had the talent but his ego and greed got in the way. He kick his uncle evangelista to the curb after a money dispute and cotto was never the same. The beast that evangelista made would have most certainly beat pac and Floyd. Cotto has only himself to blame. Hof for sure.
One of the best fighters of his era, definitely HOF material.
NOT ATG - if you took the best 5 welterweights of the 10's, 00's, 90's, 80's, he wouldn't pick up many wins.
Although ironically in prime version, I would pick him to beat all the current champions with ease.
Not sure who was arguing he was an ATG, but that's definitely a stretch. He tried, but tings didn't workout that way for him, however, he is still a great fighter and one of the best of his time.
Not an atg... not a knock of cotto, he was a really talented fighter, first ballot hall of fame but not atg..
That term gets used way too much around here..
HELL no that coward aint no hall of famer lol. And I am Puerto Rican by the way. WHOEVER ducks Golovkin, doesnt deserve to be in the HOF, period. SO dont expect to see floyd, Canelo, Cotto, Sergio in the HOF.
No BUT.....
Cotto is a first ballot HOF'mer who fought everyone and never ducked anyone. He is not an ATG. He is however, one of the greatest fighter's in Puerto Rican history.
Now. Here's where threads like this get tricky. In the same way Cotto isn't an ATG, neither is Floyd Mayweather. Are you fair enough to admit that about Floyd? If so, I respect you. Cotto's resume is better than Floyd's. You can consider Oscar and Tito ATG's based on era and opposition faced. Oscar has one of the top five resumes EVER. Remember, being an all-time great is about who you fought, when you fought them, and how many of those tough fights did you win. Manny is an ATG and a top 10 one in my book. Bernard Hopkin's is a HOF'mer. I do not consider him one of the greatest fighter's I've ever seen. He was BIG and took advantage of it for a long time by staying at middleweight. Who did his 20 something title defenses come against? His claim to fame was Tito and Oscar, who were too small. Tarver was coming off filming Rocky and was FAT. He drained himself back down to Light Heavyweight. Pavlik was a drunk. Winky gave him all he could handle, despite getting head butted early in the fight. I respect him but he is no ATG. Everybody's opinion is different when it comes to this topic.
he would have beaten floyd back 5 years before they fought but floyd went byebye and changed the course of history. just like back to the future. floyd had the sports almanac and saw himself losing so he just didn't fight. clever
not even close.
most people cosider the ATG the top 10 in a division, or the top 100 all time. that's a loose characterization, but one i find a good deal of people will go by.
he's nowhere near the top 10 at 140. at WW :lol1:? f#cking WW? the division with armstrong, leonard, and robinson? that WW?
so no
no freaking way
nah brih
Most definitely... Cotto is the poster boy for near Greats
He didn't have that one special attribute to get jom over the hump
He'd get destroyed by gavilan, Leonard's, basilio would break him down, Rodriquez was too mobile n deceptive power, then let's not forget Dlh, Whitaker, curry, Griffith, Armstrong, ted kid lewis
He would've been a contender but he wouldn't have been "great" in every era.
not even close.

Obvious hall of famer. Of course. The guy fought pretty much every name he could. But, he did lose to two of the true ATG of this era in Floyd and Manny. I'll leave the Margarito fight off of this for obvious reasons. Then you have very close fights with guys like Clottey, Judah, and Mosley. Close but clear wins other than Clottey which could have gone either way. So what are his biggest wins? The Margarito rematch? A shot to bits Martinez? I don't know, I guess it would be an older Sugar Shane. Then, late in his career he loses wide IMO to Canelo. I don't see the argument for ATG anywhere in there. He is/was a very good fighter, and a warrior. What boxing is all about. Fist ballot hall of famer. But no ATG.
