If these guys fought back in the day like they should have, who would you favour? I would likely favour Marquez but Prince's punching power may hav caused some problems.
Now I know? I was an avid fan back and saw the Sanchez broadcast live and have followed Naz since his broadcasts were televised.
I don't have anything to prove, if you don't think HBO was great at putting the short notice spin on these situations regarding their Exclusive Fighters then we have nothing further to discuss.
And I am by no means a JMM supporter but I was present and it was Naz that was avoiding JMM.
who turned down the fight?
Naz made the same mistakes his whole career. Leaning back, overrating his own chin. Kelley almost KO'd him and Barrera made easy work of him.
That tells me that Marquez, who was light years more precise than Kelley, would have KO'd Hamed inside of 9 rounds.
Hamed had sharp reflexes and only got caught off balance. I think he waso nly ever hurt once in his career and that was against Kelley. Even then, he came back and stopped him in brutal fashion.
What makes you think a green Marquez, who had lost to a c lister like Norwood would beat a prime Naz?
Marquez will sit in the pocket and counter him all night long. The trouble with Hamed is he had a very low work rate and wasn't a combination puncher. The key in defeating Marquez is to outbox him by using a lot of distance, staying out the exchanges and beating him to the punch.
Naseem Hamed would do just the opposite of that because he considers himself a huge slugger/puncher. He would attempt to bum rush JMM by throwing single punches at a time, as he attempts to land those leaping left uppercut hay makers, while getting hit with precision like, accurate and surgical counter punches in the process.

People acting like a prime Naz couldn't box, smh.
Naz was fast, the best reflexes in the game at the time and could punch. If damn Norwood can beat Marquez at FW, what you think Naz would do?
Plus, when Naz was wrecking 126, Marquez wasn't even in his prime, that didn't happen till 02/03, when he got his second world title shot.
Prime Naz over the 98/99 version of JMM all day and twice on Sundays.
That fight of JMM vs Norwood was very close. And JMM knocked down one time Norwood but the referee didn't count the down.
JMM is way better than Hamed.
Barrera outboxed Hamed counterpunching. Easy work for JMM.
stop distracting. SHort notice? The guy was getting a career high pay day, claims he is chasing THE man and then turns it down? Vitali fought Lewis on short notice, Manny fought Ledwaba. When you are trying to create a legacy and make a name for yourself, you don't do that.
JMM has always had this yellow streak. He turned down cos "he's too young" and then turned down fighting Pacquiao, although that same man gave him his 4 biggest paydays.
Anyway, bottom line is this, you were in the camp that said Naz turned down the fight, now you know JMM was the one who turned it down. If you can prove it otherwise, I'm all ears.

All i know was the fight was offered to JMM and he didn't go for it.
lol init
The diva attitude of JMM was in stark contract to what MAB and Morales were doing at the time.
Naz was clearly on the decline by the time of the Augie Sanchez fight. The fight was offered to both Tapia and JMM on short notice, and they would have been stupid to accept in retrospect.
And nobody is saying JMM is a smart businessman when he was younger, this was the same JMM to fight Chris John for peanuts only to not get the decision.

JMM turned down his largest payday. That's all.
Naz held 3 world titles, why would he be running from the mando of one of them? Heck, he should have held a 4th if it wasnt for the politicis. Naz owed nobody anything back then. He was the king, you had to prove you were worthy to get in there.
JMM claims to have chased him and then turns down the fight when it gets close? Thats some grade school bs.

The fans picking JMM have probably never seen Hamed fight or only the Barrera fight. They pick JMM because they don't know shit about Hamed. Prime Hamed would have beat the shit out of all those Mexicans and Pacquiao too.
hamed was a **** fighter lol that kid fought washed up good fighters and nobodies barrera taught his ass a lesson jmm would of whipped that boy
I recall the Augie Sanchez broadcast. JMM was Naz mandatory for close to 2 years and the Naz fight was only offered to JMM on short notice. WBO liked the Naz sanctioning fees and didn't force that mando. Like you said Naz was the premier FW, JMM was on a 2 fight winning streak after his 2nd loss and all HBO could do was point out the fact that these guys turned down Naz.

He was mandatory when? 99/2000? Coming off a loss? Cmon man be real.
Oh and watch a HBO broadcast for Naz v Augie I think it was, where they put forward a list of possible challengers to Naz who all turned down the fights. Guess what one of those names was? Yep, Marquez. The only one of those names that finally decided to step in the ring was MAB.
JMM didn't want it and he has done that with several other fighters, famously with not wanting to rematch Pacquiao and avoiding Khan.
You people forget Naz was the premier FW of his gen and many top names didn't wanted that kind of business. Even Morales was reluctant.
Edit: Marquez actively turned down the fight after "chasing" it for so long. Heck, JMM and Tapia turned down career high, million dollar plus paydays.

You are crazy, Barrera hurt him in the fight.
And Hamed never fought real bangers with elite skills like JMM.
What round? He didn't hurt him at all.
It's like you guys never even watched him. He beat 9 current, past or future World Champions. Ruled his division and lots of fighters didn't want it.
The same Marquez who Naz avoided as his mandatory. This was well known at the time.

Prime for prime Naz wins in a close fight. He might well KO Marquez though but if it goes to points it's a 7-5 type of close fight.
The mom of Hamed...
TKO lol...Hamed was never hurt in any fight, he was only ever caught off balance.
