I was always under the impression that a guaranteed purse was the guaranteed revenue from ticket/PPV sales. However I'm reading articles on fighter's purses from past fights and they say something along the lines of '$1m guaranteed purse plus revenue from ticket and PPV sales'.
So the way they word that, they are saying that ticket/PPV sales is a separate entity from a guaranteed purse. If this is true, can someone explain where the money for the fighters' purses comes from?
It's only applicable in PPV cases, not anything else.
It's a way to convince/persuade the fighter into taking the deal. The guaranteed purse is normally not the amount the fighter accepts in a regular non-PPV fight. He wants more. He can make more if the fight sells. If not, then he's to blame for making the fight boring; promoter didn't promote it well, etc. Plus, fighter/s would have incentive in promoting the fight.
In boxing, it just money that is ''guaranteed'' by the fighters promoter to make a fight. The money is almost always deposited into the fighters account the day before the fight; so even if lets say a tornado comes and destroys the arena and cancels the fight, the money is still paid. It is promoter to fighter, not network to fighter. Promoter takes a bit of a risk here
It's basically the minimum a fighter will earn and is usually covered by the promoter.
So you might get 25% of revenue with a 1million guarantee.
Which means if the fight makes $2mil you still get your 1mil but if it does $6mil you get 25% of that which is 1.5mil.
You don't get your guarantee AND your % as some in here think.
It's one or the other, whichever is higher.
That makes sense, thanks! What about for un-televised events?
I don't wanna give some wrong info but I think the network says to the promoter: We're gonna give you this much money.
Then the promoter has to figure out how to split that money between ALL the fighters while keeping some to pay for the venue, the ring girls and all that crap.
Network makes money from the viewers, promoter makes money from sponsors and gate money.
If I'm wrong someone correct me.
It's just a guaranteed "flat fee." If I'm not mistaken the network gives the money for the fight then the promoter uses that money to pay the fighters and everything else.

Where does the guaranteed purse come from though? Ticket sales? Promoters?

guaranteed purse is something you will get even if the fight fails, you could get much more money if the fight sells out and does a good ppv
