When he was a super middleweight, I thought he was an elite A+ fighter. After the layoff and comeback I am not sure. We will find out after he fights Kovalev.
The winner of Ward-Kov will prove who is elite. I think this fight will be the determining factor. Ward certainly was, but he needs to find his A game after being off so long.
I agree.........
There was no question at one point that Ward was an elite boxer, maybe the best in the sport. That was quite some time ago, though. Right now I'd put him just below elite until we see what happens against Kovalev.
Guess I should have read this before I posted. Pretty much what I said to.

He's not an elite fighter I think he is a B or B- fighter you have to take into consideration how much fouling he utilizes in his fights these are not real technical boxing skills also he robbed his way to a gold medal so yes a B seems fair.
I think we need our referees to enforce the rules a little bit more because in every big fight Ward has ever had he has cheated in them to win it this is not acceptable behaviour, absolutely not an elite fighter.

B- for me, not fought a live body in years and his CV in general is overrated. Loses points for refusing to fight out of oakland where the refs give him every advantage
who do you consider elite in the game today?
I would give him the highest possible rating.I think he is one of the 6 or 7 best fighters fighting today. Exactly where he ranks among the top 7 for me depends on how he does against Kovalev. His opposition has been so soft the last 4 years that it's hard for me to know exactly how good he is today. He is damn good for sure.
A+ elite fighter,,,,, don't really know how you can argue against it.. Only knock against Ward is inactivity and really nothing to do with his actual skills
B+.....but he might end up a C after Kovalev is finished with him.
After Kovalev wins UD, Ward will either fight a few bums and retire or ask for a rematch
Ward's an elite boxer and that's regardless of the rating I'd give him. Him not being the biggest puncher coupled with his propensity to look for the clinch could drop him down to an A but there are aspects of his game that have been A+ undoubtedly.
His upcoming bout with Kovalev will be interesting. If Ward can weather Sergei's shots then he has the skill and intelligence to be able to make Kovalev look clumsy.
