The end is coming for HBO boxing.
Dwindling viewership a budget that will continue to get chopped and PPVS that can't break 300k buys (means they can't make money on them).
Pacquiao was the last carrot they had to dangle in front of welter in order to generate them higher paydays than the $2 million max for regular license fees. Now PBC and Showtime are firmly in the driver's seat.
When HBO gets out of boxing, it will be great for US boxing as PBC will own everything.
It has to do with Pac's stance on gays.
That would be something, considering they televised Mayweather knowing his stance on beating up women.
Heck, they've employed Lampley for almost a decade since he was arrested for domestic violence.
I don't know if you gave noticed but HBO's boxing viewership is at an all time low this year. People are tired of mismatches.
Yet HBO's worst ratings rival Shos best, even prorated for number of subscribers, right?
Hey weren't you saying Sho is sh1t and you hope they die, just last week? What changed?
People have the right to form an opinion of you based on those beliefs, HBO has the right to drop you for those beliefs if they believe it will impact their brand.
This is something I don't get. People who cry out about their "freedom of speech" so they can be hateful don't want others to exercise theirs when in criticising them.
Is hbo really not going to carry manny pac's fights? I hadn't heard that..
Hbo is getting out of boxing because of the lack of PPv star power and boxing's General decline in popularity.. Back in the 80s when boxing was still huge, boxing was probably responsible for 40-50% of the subscribers,, but decades later it's probably less than 5%. And they use to have tons of PPV caliber fighters, just look back 10 years ago, you had guys like Oscar, hopkins, roy, tito, shane, manny, morales, barrera, floyd, gatti. Now it's only canelo that can really draw a PPv for them
There are plenty of quality fights that HBO can make. Very few of them are PPV worthy, but quality mid-level fights are still good for fans, the network and the sport. The problem is that promoters are not willing to work with each other as they did 20 years ago and fighters are not willing to fight quality completion unless they get paid more money than most of them will make in their entire career.
It wouldn't surprise me if HBO got out of the boxing business within the next two years.
And how about the sh*t Tyson used to say? Lmao
"I want to rip out his heart and feed it to him. I want to kill people. I want to rip their stomachs out and eat their children."
"I try to catch on the tip of the nose, because i try to pust the bone into the brain."
"They called me a 'rapist' and a 'recluse.' I'm not a recluse."
"White boy, f*ggot, you can't touch me you're not man enough, I eat your ass all alive, you b*tch, can't anybody in here f*ck with this, this is the ultimate. F*ck you, you hoe! Come say it to my face, you b*tch. Come on you b*tch, you're a scared coward, you're not man enough to f*ck with me, you can't last two minutes in my world b*tch. (At this point the reporter backs away deeper into the crowd) Look you scared now, you hoe. Scared like a little cracker b*tch. Scared of the real man! I'll f*ck you till you love me."
:lol1:
Mike was one of the biggest sideshow draws on earth...he coulda said that he supported Hitler and the networks still would've been lining up to air his fights
Nah, I don't think it's his stance on gays. I mean it doesn't help, but as long as you're bringing in bank then these motherf**ker's don't care. Hell Floyd is a known woman beater yet Showtime still jumped at the chance to give him like the most lucrative deal in professional sports history.
I think it's more or less MP isn't near the draw he used to be. Hell that Pacquiao/Bradley fight, profit wise was an absolute bomb. And Pac/Vargas is guaranteed to be even worse. Therefor HBO doesn't want any part of it.
If Manny was still the draw he was back 5-ish years ago then HBO would be down with it gay remarks or not.
True remember pacquiao said some gay remarks back in 2012 before the 1st bradley fight

I know. I didn't watch the ward/brand crap.
I don't disagree with you completely. I just think if HBO gets access to good opposition for their stars this will be corrected. Of course that means working with Haymon, who controls almost all the quality opponents for HBO's best names.
either that or they will have to let them go, which wouldn't be a bad thing because then they could fight the Haymon guys anyway.
If HBO starts working with Haymon that just means that Haymon control over boxing escalates even further. It's definitely possible.

Because HBO'S boxing budget cannot handle anything over $3 million dollars in terms of a license fee.
Pac alone requires at least $8-$10 million.
Oh ok gotcha
I think a regular subscription HBO fight with Pacquiao headlining, even against Vargas, would do terrific numbers. But this sh*t on PPV on any platform is whack bruh
HBO ain't hurting itself at all IMO. When they're making that sweet, sweet Game of Thrones money, they couldn't give two shits about boxing.
Game of Thrones won't be on forever.
Check what I am saying. I agree that opposition isn't easy to find but I think HBO isn't dead with the talent level they have. They will still attract casuals that only care about seeing popular guys get KO's.
We as diehards will know they are BS fights.
HBO has been showing Valdez, Ramirez and Verdejo but they are thin in terms of up and comers.
you need to think about what I am really saying here!!

Can someone please educate me on why a fight like this couldn't just be on regular HBO subscription World Championship Boxing?

So who are they going to use for HBO fights? Canelo vs. Saunders? Ward vs. Brand? Kovalev vs. Chilemba on MONDAY night? Chocolatito means nothing to the average HBO viewer, and everything else has been overmatched sparring sessions. They have nothing that would warrant an HBO subscription.
At first I thought you had said something intelligent, but then you immediately nullified it by following it with something asinine.
Absolutely correct that HBO has no opponents...GB and TR are in a dry spell, and Haymon isn't going to save them except for no-hopers like Wade, Breaeale and Khan...and that's not changing anytime soon. "Soon as they get it" is easier said than done. Prospects are no better for HBO in the near future.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....
Loma is "the face of the populist movement in boxing"???? Hardcore fans are bored by him, and casual fans have never heard of him.
Funniest thing I've heard in a while.

I don't know the particulars
But Pac seems to have a built in PPV of 300k which most likely will beat Ward/ Kov #s. Doesn't make sense to me to drop him now especially if they lose out on a Mayweather / Pac rematch down the road.
It's like HBo is on a kamikaze mission to rid itself of boxing with the exception of Canelo & GGG
