This is a fight between arguably 2 of the best 5 fighters our sport has to offer. Normally when this happens, the fight is a box office smash. Leonard/Duran, Chavez/Whitaker, Oscar/Trinidad, Mayweather/Pacquiao. Arenas are packed and millions are watching. It's a good time to celebrate boxing.
In this case, the fan interest will not match the magnitude of the fight.
1. The promoters suck and have no experience staging fights of this magnitude.
2. Neither fighter is a superstar and generate average to below average ratings on HBO.
3. The fight will be on ppv which will limit the audience to only 150-200k
4. The fight will be in Vegas and apparently mgm already plans on buying tickets and handing them out to high rollers because they know this fight won't sell on it's own
MGM also had put in a request to purchase a large quantity of tickets for the Ward-Kovalev bout, likely to be distributed to high rollers.
Which means you aren't getting good seats if you decide to go.
5. Neither guy can sell unless he's in his hometown
So what we have, is a rare instance, where the best fight in boxing will not be in a packed, sold out arena with millions watching worldwide. The audience will be limited to a couple hundred thousand hardcore fans and Vegas high rollers. The promotion will be an embarrassment and the fight will likely be lackluster.
Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for this fight. But unfortunately, these two great fighters will be displaying their talents in front of a limited audience and will likely see little increase in their star power.
I disagree with point 3, this fight will have a much bigger audience than 200k. I reckon at least 600k buys. That's only households so lets say the average household had a fight party 10 people or even 5 people plus people streaming the fight the American audience probably is in the millions.
good point overall though, it don't have that 'mega' fight vibe like the fights you mentioned.
Shame this fight is being handled this poorly (by both sides, in my opinion). I was doing my typical 'promoting' of this fight at work, and even though I explained the significance of the fight, not one of them were interested. One person asked "will either of them fight pacquaio soon?". I give up.
Lol crazy
The general public only knows mayweather and pacquiao
MY POINT EXACTLY! While we b1tch and complain the fighters, WTF are these Current Promoters doing besides sitting back and waiting for HBO to pay for everything? Don King was a Crook Piece Of Sh1t like most promoters but one thing he was able to do is not only get big fights done but also Sell The Fight on his own! No promoters can do that now!
As for the Ward vs Kovalev Presser, that proves my point as well of how SH1T the promoters are now. They can't even organize a Presser Properly. For a fight of this magnitude the pressure needs to be more than some Hole In A Wall Pressure. That looked like some last minute put together BS (even though Duva said she told Roc Nation Weeks ago "Allegedly"), was the Boxing Press even aware of that Presser? Most of them seem as if they had no clue it was happening either. That being said, it is plenty of time between now at November 19th to promote and organize a PROPER Press Tour!
Exactly. This fight deserves better. That's all I'm saying.

Then your standards are low. This will be the lowest selling PPV of all time between two top p4p fighters. I grew up when fights like this had the world watching. I watched Tyson/Holyfield and said "fvck football" I want to box. You show this fight to a young kid, then have him watch the Super Bowl or the NBA Finals, there is no question which sports he will focus his talents on.
For real, my mother hated sports when I was a kid and she always bought Tyson PPVs. She would watch HBO boxing (how I grew up a Roy Jones fan) and has strong feelings on Leonard vs. Hagler. Boxing used to transcend sports fans and was just a part of everyday culture.
Been a long time since that was true.
Don King packed arenas and made **** happen. It is what it is. When did you ever see a joke of a kick-off press conference for a Top Rank/Golden Boy/Don King, hell even a Mayweather Promotions PPV.
The fight is 3 months away and they don't even have a venue!!!! How are we supposed to book flights, hotels and make plans for vacation???
You say it's about business, how is this good business? They had the pre-fight press conference for Sergey Kovalev vs. Andre Ward November 19th PPV but only had one minor issue. No Andre Ward!!!!

Fight fans we have this Delusion that it is about US THE FANS, it is not and it has never been, it has always been about the MONEY and about BUSINESS the difference is we have internet so we get more information faster compared to depending on RING Magazines every Month
You honestly think Don King in his PRIME as a Promoter cared about the fans? FUK NO! It was always about the Money! Same thing now, for K2, GBP, Mainevents, Top Rank, Haymon fighters, it is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! Fans have somehow fooled themselves into think it is about them and sadly it never was about us. Maybe some of you are just extremely young and not mature enough to understand :dunno:
I love Boxing and I have learned over many years that it is a sport that you have to take the good with the bad, and you will have to take a lot of bad before you get to the good :lol1: Nobody forces you to watch, you can turn it off at anytime, it is ENTERTAINMENT not a Necessity. Some of you complain about boxing like it is your Phone Service and like it is something you need to live. You don't like what you see, TURN IT OFF! But I don't think you 1 View is going to change anything :dunno:

I'm not going to stop watching anytime soon, what I don't like I don't watch and what I do like I watch, Simple Solution!
I am surprised that Duva didn't make the fight there. SHe supposedly had some big money Russians bankrolling her. Why didn't they make a huge offer to get this in Russia like they did with Povetkin/Wkad?
She was frontin. Demanded the WBC purse bid because of these Russian "high rollers" that would of bid for her, then ran away scared when Team Stevenson called her bluff.
This is what happens when you have amateur promoters in charge of big time fighters. I give her credit for discovering Kovalev, giving him a chance no one else did and taking his career this far. But his career has hit a stopping point and if she fvcks this up, he will have reached his peak which is unfortunate. If she can't close the Ward deal that's 2 major fights she fvcked up and it's time she sells his promotional rights to someone who can handle fighters of this caliber and on this level.

This is what I call "pure gold" post...
... Fight in Oakland, have Jack Reiss as ref, and have at least Morrow and Christodoulou as judges.
... and get a 75-25 purse for Ward.
... "We dare to be great".
... Did I ever call you in this manner? You know I didn't...
So, take a walk, kid...
all the extra BS for no reason. you take the walk, son.
I don't know. Although to be honest, I wouldn't blame Ward for not wanting to fight there. This is a big fight and I wonder how safe Ward would be if he won.
Can't have it both ways. If you want the big dough you should go where it is.
I could see if the were in a smaller Vegas arena but the T Mobile?

How about Russia? That would also sell nicely.

I hope so. The fighters deserve to be rewarded. But that kick-off "press-conference" was an embarrassment.
I didn't see it but if one fighter doesn't turn up, the chances of it being a success are nil.
I been seeing 'the best fight the best' thing is people dont mention that here to often because a few fights are not signed yet...but In due time the demand is usually met when the money is right...in most cases that is.
That's what I said all the time: the fight isn't signed...
I think you might be surprised. Boxing has literally nothing else this year.
