What can be done? Both were on Fox, yet the UFC fight headlined by holly holm had close to a 5 million view rating, but the heavyweight champion of the world Deontay Wilder barely broke 1 million on free tv on same channel and network.
What is boxing doing wrong? This is why Boxing needs a Dana White who knows how to market a product to the internet generation. Boxing is run by some outdated ways, they still use print and radio ads.
that fight did not have a ton of hype in the media
Not all across the media, but Holm was on a few different shows promoting her next fight and talking about getting the title back and hopefully fighting Ronda again. Fox Sports 1 also replayed the UFC 193 PPV (where Holm upset Rousey in the main event) for three straight days leading up to the fight with Valentina that Saturday.
Its really simple. The best have to fight the best consistently. The reason UFC is so popular is because every fight is competitive, top guys have to fight top guys they dont get to pick and choose and milk records. Porter vs Thurman did good ratings because it was the best fighting the best.
The UFC isn't built on stars like boxing is doe. Stars are built thru winning fights in the UFC. And stars get knocked off all the time. Then new stars get pushed up thru the competitive structure the UFC has built via beating other potential stars. The UFC has a star building machine with Joe Silva & Sean Shelby their matchmakers.
In boxing a promoter chooses a star based on his beliefs on what makes a star & then navigates him for 3-4 years thru bs fights to slightly competitive fights than to a title than after another year or two a promoter will take a risk on him like Arum recently did with Crawford fighting his biggest competition by far (although obviously the fight was more competitive on paper than in the ring the scenario stands).
So if a boxer loses in year 3 then thats a huge lose to the promoter. In the UFC SOMEONE is rising all the time thus a star will come out the other end sooner or later.
Fighters can't be stars anymore once they start losing, don't you get that? Once the aura is gone, its never the same. That's why the UFC model sucks massively and long-term is a disaster.
MMA is the future, not boxing. More kids are training in MMA gyms now.
Haymon has the right idea but he overpays these boxers for easy matches. When it comes to the boxers facing someone with high risk, they want way more money or make excuses like marinating. Boxing has been digging its own grave.
Also, when you look at MMA fight cards, a lot of them are stack and give you a good bang for the buck. Boxing it's usually just the main event and even then the main event might suck.
LOL MMA is losing all its stars. UFC is so desperate for star power they brought back a decrepit Brock Lesnar for UFC 200, only to see him fail a drug test immediately after.
Face it, UFC was a roided-up hype machine for much of its success and will struggle in the future to create stars that don't lose their second big fight..
Tbh I don't think anything can be done. Mma just fits with how people like things these days. Even a lot if you guys complain how some of these boxing matches go and it's brutal when it goes on for 36 minutes compare to 15.
Every sports is going to go on a high then die out like baseball is dying in America and football basically have completely taken over. I'm pretty sure football is going to lose its popularity in my lifetime and basketball will be the dominance sport in America.
lol at Basketball. never!
Boxing is in the toilet and this is a prime example of why. We have a good looking heavyweight division right now with the likes of Fury, Klitschko, Wilder, Joshua, Haye, Povetkin, Ortiz, Parker... put any of those guys together for a good fight - yet on Saturday we got Wilder vs. Chris ****ing Arreola. Not his fault with the Povetkin fall out but still.
This is what is killing boxing, nobody fights each other anymore. Evenly matched fights are a rarity and when we do get them they are years in the making. That's without even taking into account all of the "showcase" fights that fill up every undercard. Even as a boxing fan it's uninteresting half the time because you know who's gonna win before the bell even rings, so it's no wonder casual viewers aren't clamouring to watch.
The UFC typically stacks its cards full of competitive fights and that's exactly what boxing needs to start doing before it really starts falling behind. It's not as though we don't have the fighters to do it with - the welterweight division alone right now could provide plenty of terrific matchups, but sadly we'll never get to see most of them because of "business" and "boxing politics".
People have been saying the same things about boxing since it began. The truth is MMA does get more competitive fights but the sheer number of fights cancelled due to injury/out-of-cage issues makes MMA's problems almost as bad.

Let's be honest, it's not only because of marketing/exposure that UFC is growing and kicking boxing's ass in most important markets...it's also that MMA itself is so diverse that there's much less chance that the fight will be low contact. Most people who watch combat sports want to see brawls....boxing is so specialized and that's why only the very best rise to the elite, but the way the scoring system is right now, there's almost 0 incentive to make it a high contact fight...minimize risk and punch just enough to win has become the norm and is what most trainers teach...it's smart but it's also why when you have two boxers who have that gameplan, there's gonna be little entertaining value for most fans. Add the favoritism of referees when it comes to spoiling tactics....
Some fans act like a change of rules would be dumbing the sport down, but really every other major sport(especially in America, the market we're analyzing) favors action...the NFL has added protection for the QB, NBA has favored offense, MMA breaks up the action when the fight goes to the floor for too long.
Boxing on the other hand accomodates their rules to the benefit of the highest bidder...fighters can pay you to use pillow gloves, can choose a huge ring or a small one, can clinch all night with no consequences...
Boxing has changed it's rules loads of times before, so I don't get why it would be impossible for the sport to have harsh regulations for ring size, gloves and clinching....none of that discretion of the ref/comission bs....and change the way the officials interact with promoters....obviously corruption is always gonna be a problem but the way it is right now can't get any worse...
Holm kicking Ronda's head off her shoulders is still fresh in people's minds, plus this fight with Valentina had a ton of hype in the media, so...
that fight did not have a ton of hype in the media
Boxing is just NOT as easy to follow with all the belts, divisions, etc. UFC only has NINE divisions, and has been far more accessible for this current generation.
Most times when I bring up the topic, these are the types of responses I get:
Me: Hey, did you catch that ______-______ fight?
1.) Them: Umm, who? Boxing? Nah that's a boring old man's sport(blahblah).
Usually the topic is dropped then and there.
2.) Them: When was that? What channel? PPV?/Seriously? What division, etc.
These types are generally fight fans but follow UFC more because of the many reasons already listed in this thread.
3.) Them: Start ranting about all the problems with Boxing, yea I get it, but that wasn't my question. :lol1:
Also, I agree UFC has done a great job promoting. Making it more accesible to more people everywhere, especially the younger generation. Bringing in popular WWE guys helped as well, I'm sure. They invested wisely. Many young folks grew up watching UFC on "free TV", internet, etc., much like the older generation got to watch REAL GOOD fights on free TV.
People also seem to feel Boxing is too limited compared to MMA, that it wouldn't help them as much in an actual fight. I can understand both sides of the arguement, but I'd bet on a Boxer any day with most things being even.
The UFCs marketing craps all over boxing's that's why.
The UFC is actual fighting marketing. Boxing is the same old BS they promoted 50 years ago, nothing has changed.

Dana White would be crazy to pay $1.3 million for a single fighter who will just run around the ring for 12 rounds.
Yep you're right the UFC had a ****ty PPV year in 2014 (3.2M PPV buys) & its one of the two years in the last decade where boxing sold more PPV's than the UFC (the other was 2007 largely off the back of ODLH vs Floyd). Last year Boxing had its best year of the last decade (6.0M PPV buys), but the UFC had its 3rd biggest year of the decade with 7.5M PPV buys.
It's not really apples to apples though man. UFC has a PPV every month and they usually try to have a championship fight on each one. Boxing averages more every other month. It's not exactly a fair comparison.
You joke but the reality is most MMA fans didn't know 75% of the people fighting on this UFC card. I'd bet 90%+ didn't know who Holm was fighting. Fighting is appealing. Names don't mean as much as people think. Names get built and names fall all the time.
The thing is most sports fans don't know ANY active boxers any damn way. So making some Thurman vs Brook vs Spence round robin wouldn't mean f#ck all except to the hardcore fans who would watch all 3 of those guys vs 2nd rate contenders.
Some of you guys don't realize boxing failing or succeeding on national TV has nothing to do with hardcore fans like virtually everyone here. It has to do with recapturing sports fans imagination with boxing again and that was never going to happen quickly. And it has nothing to do with the best fights cuz the names in those fights mean nothing to the non hardcore fans who have barely watched boxing over the last 2 decades and like I said most have never watched boxing. Thurman or Joe Smith or Spence or Aron Martinez are all new names to them.
of course i was joking and actually with both angulo and hernandez shot beyond belief that fight is actually and even match up. I can't say the same for the main event. It is one sided fights like Lara Rodriguez that potential new fans run away.
The sad thing is with what you said about the UFC card they still blew away Deontay Wilder's ratings with no name fighters for the most part. Why? Because the fans are familiar with the UFC name and know what types of fights they bring.
The UFC is perceived as cool and hip while boxing is perceived to be boring. Besides Manny and Floyd and a few people knowing who Canelo or Cotto is, 99% of sports fans who are casual at most boxing fans can't name one other single fighter. They don't know who Thurman, Garcia or Crawford is. Holm going into that fight was coming off a loss even when she blacked out against Tate.
The only way to slowly build the fan base is to make more 50-50 type fights with good action
