What do you guys think about this story I just read on ESPN:
The numbers just get worse and worse for Premier Boxing Champions. The ratings for this past Saturday night’s card on NBC in prime time sank to PBC’s lowest in prime time. The 2½-hour telecast, which was headlined by a fight that generated zero prefight buzz and was viewed as a mismatch (although unknown Joe Smith scored a first-round knockout of light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara in a major upset), generated just a 0.8 overnight rating, down 20 percent from NBC’s previous PBC telecast in April (1.0) and down 39 percent from the card before that in December (1.3), according to Sports Media Watch. The 0.8 is the lowest for a prime-time PBC card on network television (there have been nine telecasts between NBC and Fox since PBC debuted in March 2015). According to Sports Media Watch, the 0.8 is one of the lowest metered market ratings ever for a sporting event on prime-time network television. Every NBC prime-time PBC telecast has had a worse rating than the one before it, likely due to several poor matchups on paper.
What I don't understand is how Haymon can have all these talented fighters and put together such sh*t cards. This would've been a great card to have Danny Jacobs headline against a decent MW, have J-Rock in a stay busy to help promote the Charlo fight in September.
Next weeks Thurman/Porter card has a complete sh*t of an undercard.
Mares/Cuellar fell through at the 11th hour, so I can't get mad at the matchmakers this time.
Ward vs. Brand is an embarrassingly bad matchup for premium TV, yet Rafael says nothing about it. Kills PBC for its matchmaking, but is silent on HBO's.
Yeah except Ward vs Brand leads to Ward vs Kovalev...PBC cards lead to nothing....guy take a year off after they fight, then they fight stiffs when they come back.....
Cardiac Dan with another anti-Haymon hit piece. HBO boxing is falling a part right before our eyes and this fat POS says nothing. This guy is not honest with his readers and by looking at his appearance he is not honest with himself. Begone fat boy and take greasy face lil kim with you, your side lost the war.
If it's PBC he'll give the average, if it's HBO he'll give peak.

You're talking Showtime? Their ratings have suffered way more than Hbo
No, I'm talking quality and number of fights. HBO falloff has been dramatic. HBO's schedule is much weaker than Showtime's this year.
Of course the numbers were low, look who was fighting. Wait to see what Thruman/Porter do and Wilder/Arreola before any panic sets in
What happened to Haymon bettering the sport and making it more competitive all around? Was the Fonfara card supposed to be indicative of that?

The writing's on the wall as investors will start to scatter.
you should care about ratings if you want to see the ship stay afloat.
otherwise you can just watch in bliss, which is being ignorant to the way boxing works.
what PBC doesn isn't completely transparent; how much money they make from advertising, etc.
one thing is transparent, doe; if they don't get the ratings up the ad space is getting devalued, and the shows will be cancelled.
What can I do about the ratings other than tune in? So why should I get worked up about it? This forum alone tells you why the ratings are what they are to a certain extent with the anti PBC folks just because its a PBC card. People say they're fans of the sport but won't watch PBC cards just because of who's putting the fight on. The caliber of PBC fights are on par and many times better than what any other outfit stages right now but you have too many people *****ing about Haymon not putting PPV quality fights on time buys so for that reason they won't tune in. What kind of boxing fan is that? You get the same saltiness from many boxing pundints as well. With all of the hate thrown at PBC it makes it hard to attact casual fans. We've seen more top 10 fighters face off against each other in the last year on PBC than from any other outfit but that's not enough or that doesn't count because some aren't getting the match ups they want yet when other outfits fail to deliver those same match ups its somehow overlooked. Of course I would like PBC to remain on TV but I can only do my part by tuning in.
It's amazing.
Biggest falloff in boxing recently, and not one writer has the balls to write about it.
Pathetic.

he's whining because he called it a horrible fight. He got sh1t from everybody because he called it a horrible fight. Now he's whining.
Did he write about those lomachenko ratings? Or how it didn't sell out the small hall?
nope....that doesn't fit dan's agenda.

The same beef I have with Crawford. Both are overrated and haven't fought anyone of significance to earn the praise they get. If Crawford beats Postol i'll shut up. Lomachenko has killed two fights I wanted to see because he gets paid so much he doesn't want to take a pay cut to make the fights happen. I would like to see fighters actually beat somebody before throwing them on P4P lists.
I respect that but honestly thats what boxing today leaves us with. Networks, sanctioning bodies, and promoters have us judging fighters by the eye test and not the actual resume.
By putting Fonfara vs Smith Jr. on primetime network television he knew before hand that this card would not be a ratings smash.
No wonder PBC has been such a rousing success.

Whats your beef with Lomencheko? lol

actually he did. he has an article about the terrible rating for hbo and the terrible ratings on showtime going to head to head in the same night on june 11. good try though
I don't care what the ratings are I'm tuning in. For those that don't for whatever reason you're missing out on some good fights.
We may not know the opponent of the popular/known fighter but We know it once they beat the favorite. And that has happened more that once on PBC cards.

i think al is just trying to has out who th enext floyd mayweather is going to be, and keep his guys on TV and making big purses and damn the rest.
This fight is massive for PBC's reputation.
If it gets anywhere under 2M that would be a huge blow to PBC. By all accounts it should do very well. But that remains to be seen.
it needs over 3mil. Canelo did well over 2mil vs Kirkland on HBO which is in 75% less homes. A fight like Thurman-Porter available in 4x more homes should do double what Canelo did
that's what happens when u put fonfora vs (literally who?) on NBC
what the hell was hymen thinking?
I agree with this. Haymon and his team had better options.
