As the title states, I'd like you to list 5 examples of boxers who you think are the smartest, as well as the dumbest IN THE RING aka highest and lowest ring IQ. I couldn't care less if the dude is a nuclear physicist OUT the ring, if he displays Homer Simpson like intelligence in the ring, then he belongs in Low Ring IQ column.
Let's list and discuss!
PS: Happy Friday. Have your fun, but be responsible about it. Swallow/shoot/snort whatever you want, but don't operate power tools/drive/use a fire arm if you do.
Also, he set traps for Margo and Cotto all night... Even after the injuries. He also countered both very well. That is ring IQ, right?
Those were also very competitive fights aswell. Clottey had one bad outting IMHO. That was against Pac.
If that constitutes dummy, than so be it.
you make good points.
guess he really pissed me off in those fights.
it's his making faces like nothing fazes him while not throwing punches.
.. and those are the three, the magnitude got to him. that's mentality, not physical inability. that ghanaian is nothing if not a fucking motor.

We will just agree to disagree. Mental tuffness issues? Sure. Ring IQ? Played no part in any of those 3 fights.
Cba to do a proper list, but i reckon Andre Dirrell deserves a mention here on the 'dumb' side
In the context of the physical gifts he has, his career has been a massive let down. Even if you scored the Froch fight to him, the fact he was so clearly better than Froch but still made the fight close is a testament to his shocking ring iq.
So basically the Pac fight... Gotcha!
Good to see fans still judge his entire career off that fight.
If inactivity( as in fighting once a year )was smarts, the you would be correct.
If the inability to fight through injuries was smarts, then yes, you would be correct.
Clottey was no stupid fighter by any means. The only three fights he can even be questioned for Inactivity was, Margo, Cotto, and Pac.
He busted up his hand against Margo. He was body slammed, and messed up his knee in the process against Cotto. Both fights he had in hand, at the moment of injury.
The Pac fight, I agree. Inactivity cost him a competitive fight, huge outrage from fans, and maybe a W. That doesn't make him an overall dumb fighter though.

That's not brains, that's a lack of physical ability.
nah, that's brains. clottey could throw but was too something to not do so and for me it wasn't physical deficiency .. at least IMO.
his inability to simply throw punches when it would have won him fights. sheer inactivity. neglecting to do the one thing that boxers do, punch.

To me one of the dumbest boxers I've ever seen is Tim Bradley.
Saw the title, and his name was the first I could think of. Always somehow manages to make fights more difficult than they need to be.
his inability to simply throw punches when it would have won him fights. sheer inactivity. neglecting to do the one thing that boxers do, punch.

Smartest? These guys adapt to an opponent. They study while they fight.
Floyd
Ward
GGG
Rigondeaux
Loma
Dumbest.
Edwin Rodriguez(but he is damn entertaining
Rios
Quillin
Victor Ortiz
Lemieux
Andrew Golota did one of the stupidest things I've ever seen a boxer do... All he had to do was stop hitting Riddick Bowe low and he wins the heavyweight title....
But after multiple warnings and point deductions he continued !!! HIS CORNER TELLS HIM TO DISREGARD THE BODY ALL TOGETHER AND STRICTLY TARGET THE HEAD !!!
Golota goes low again and gets disqualified !!!!
That might've been the stupidest thing a boxer has done with so much on the line ...
Smartest:
Ward
Lomachenko
Chocolatito
Rigo
Kovalev
Dumbest:
Kirkland
Khan
Provodnikov
Rios
Judah
i dunno how i forgot him. he's probably the smartest i've seen since floyd. his movement is so crisp.
Smartest?
Rigo
Loma
Ward
Wlad
And as an honorable mention (despite me knowing he's not up here) I'm going to give a shout out to Malignaggi in terms of his understanding of the game. Paulie hasn't a single enviable physical quality..infact he's completely below average in almost everything besides fortitude. How he's reached success with so little to offer physically is honestly impressive. It's been strictly IQ.
Dumbest? The usual suspects....
Rios
Khan
Ortrees
K9
Kirkland
Don't fret, little ones. I realize I didn't say Floyd, JMM, Chocolatito, B Hop and others you may consider uber technicians...but Floyd, JMM, and B Hop I dont know if or when they'll fight again. Kovalev deserves a mention in the smartest too..very nuanced and disciplined. He's not just a come forward killer.
And Boxinggod..you're setting yourself up as he said one of. :/
Bradley is a def honorable mention in the dumbest category. He'd be on a separate list with Zab and Gamboa as guys who CAN be phenomenal and do have an iq...lord knows where it goes sometimes. Bradley has been lucky he doesn't have a Khan chin or he and Khan would be perennial high light reels
Very good pick. He may be a C level fighter, but when you hear Malignaggi talk about the game you realize that he knows as much as anyone else and is just not good enough an athlete to live up to how knowledgeable he is. He would probably be a decent trainer, but I can't complain with him being an announcer.
Smartest: Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright, Juan Manuel Marquez, Joe Calzaghe, Vasyl Lomachenko
Dumbest: James Kirkland, Ruslan Provodnikov, Cornelius Bundrage, Vic Darchinyan, Yoshihiro Kamegai
Clottey? How so?
The guy had pretty good defense and knew when to counter. He was never a genius but far from the dumbest.
his inability to simply throw punches when it would have won him fights. sheer inactivity. neglecting to do the one thing that boxers do, punch.
5 smartest guys i saw in the ring:
floyd - smartest
finito
jmm
barrera
morales
5 dumbest guys i saw in the ring:
golata - dumbest (pole)
jcc jr
joshua clottey
vic ortiz
brandon rios

If we're talking all time, I gotta go with:
Smartest
Ali
Robinson
Leonard
Holmes
Pep
Dumbest (Relatively speaking of course)
Tyson
Williams (almost always gave up his height advantage)
Patterson
McCall
Gatti
Now, currently, I'd go with:
Smartest
Bradley
Rigo
GGG
Ward
Hopkins (not yet retired)
Dumbest
Rios
Provo
Alvarado
Eubank Jr
Andy Lee
