it's not a body building contest. it's a fight.
if you put a limit, you may never find out who the baddest man on the planet is.
the heavyweight champion of the world is the champion of boxing. period. can't have a weight limit and still be the champion of the entire sport.
the heavyweight championship of the world is the grandest prize in sport and if there is a weight limit, it becomes just as much of a joke as any other artificial restriction.
You're right, it isn't a bodybuilding contest, so no need for 260lbs muscle freaks waddling around with their GH guts hanging over their shorts.
There is no fighter in the top ten today who cannot get below 250lbs if they wanted to. Fury's at the upper limit, but even he can weigh in in the 240s when he puts the effort in.
The only fighter in recent years who could never have made 250 if his life depended on it was Valuev, and no one would have missed anything if that guy wasn't around.
divisions are a marketing gimmick to prop up up inferior athletes.
What? That's like saying Roy Jones is an inferior athlete compared to Butterbean simply because RJJ fought at a lower division (in terms of weight). You have the reasoning skills of an infant. Divisions are in place to give men of various sizes a space to compete against men of similar size.
The weight class should definately be altered . Most seem to be going on yesteryear here ,the Cruiser weight division was created when HW"S averaged around 210 pounds .They are averaging about 235 now and practically no one CURRENT is below 225 . Its a complete waste of space anyway let alone making it a disadvantage for smaller Hw's . Anything below 225 should be Light heavy weight ,get rid of the cruiser weight division it only adds to the confusion of many classes itself ...200 to 224 would be practical as a light HW class ! Rejust anything you need to below 200 .
The heavyweight division of 225 above is realistically up to date and you can simplify things with just LHW and HW .The true natural HW's will still be there it wouldn't change anything ,those guys bordering the 220 mark could make that decision themselves who feel going over 224 is for them........ take a look at the rankings this really shouldn't be hard to figure out we are going by over 3 decades of out dated demographs with the weight differane of the 80's of what it is now . When 90% of the top 100 guys are over 225 something needs to be altered either way!
Between the Champions themselves the weights are ....
Fury 250 / 260
Wilder 230 / 235
Joshua 240 / 250
Ortiz 240 / 245
The cruiser weight division is simply not needed anymore . Theres enough Fighters over 225 who can actually fight exist now and make up the vast majority of HW's to make the class higher , The old eras where 190 pounder fighting a 210 pounder is not huge weight differance anymore its the 220 guy fighting the 250 guy ,both are 30 pounds difference for example but 210 is not considered big at all anymore . Boxing should alter the HW class or create a SHW class but it will do neither bc unlike other practical sports it would rather keep the old school blue print for nostalgic purpose and its NOT practical and a modern HW class that starts at 200 when no one fights at even 215 anymore certainly no one of relevance and trying to justify it with saying guys will just cut to cruiser weight still makes it a waste of space .
How about the fact that the cruiserweight division is fcuking awesome, and a stacked division in its own right?
If your over about 235. What about moving the Cruiserweight limit up?
No, there is no need for it. A skilled heavyweight is always going to be a big guy anyway and can beat lesser skilled, bigger guys.
What we need, is more skilled heavyweights, not more divisions.
I think so. Other divisions have so many variations of the weight class why not heavyweight?
this way you won't have guys like Huck fighting guys like wlad and fury
If your over about 235. What about moving the Cruiserweight limit up?
Hell yeah there should be a Super Heavyweight division! That would be great, I'm all for it.
A 6'1" 205 pounder these days would cut weight and be a cruiserweight. The guys who are stuck in no mans land are guys like Monte Barrett who weigh 220 and are too small to fight a skilled big guy like either Klit or Lennox and can't boil down to 200 without being weak. I think eventually a super cruiserweight division will be adopted in the pros. The WBU had this division and Bobby Czyz won this title.
If your over about 235. What about moving the Cruiserweight limit up?
Heavyweight should be 200.1 all the way to 240....super heavyweight should be 240 and up....most the all time greats outside of lennox and wlad in their prime were below 240...the alis. foremans, bowe....etc.
guys weighing 250-260 at 6'6" shouldnt be fighting 6'1" 205 guys
it shows heart, guys like holyfield but its fighting with a handicap.
Guys like Tyson fury should have to fight guys closer to his size more often.
Not yet but it may be necessary in the years to come. It may sound crazy but there may come a day when there is an 80lb difference between opponents in the HW division.
