So, list the top 5 fights which you felt were the most intense ever in boxing, keep in mind a combination of the brutality on show in the fight, the intensity of the crowd and the animosity of the rivalry.
Mine would be something like:
5. Eubank v Benn 1
4. Resto v Collins Jr
3. Ali v Frazier 1
2. Ali v Frazier 3
1. Benn v McClelan
DO NOT LOOK IT UP ON BOXREC BEFORE HAND
:)
One of the greatest fights of all time.....
:)
LOL I won't best not to know the result
Man, there's some great fights mentioned in this thread. I feel like watching them over again.
agreed, the idea came after I'd watched Benn v Mc for about the millionth time
If we are talkin intense then......
Has to be Mahyar Monshipour vs Somsak Sithchatchawal
They land a truly ridiculous amount of clean power shots on each other all
through the fight.
Mahyar Monshipour was ALWAYS in entertaining fights....
I haven't seen this one, I'll give it a watch
But you used the criteria of it being competitive, you just posted it like 2 posts above this, da fuk are you on about?
And RJJ over the hill?
Man just admit you were wrong and stop backtracking. At least that way you retain some respect.
I am not backtracking, I just keep going back to the term "intense". A fight doesn't have to be competitive to be intense, but at the same time all the fights I listed were in fact competitive at some point in the fight, maybe not all of the fight, maybe your scorecards reflected blowouts.
Again, as an example: Fury vs Wlad. Was it action packed violence? No. Was it close? No. But it was close for many people at the beginning stages of the fight, and the suspense of not knowing what would happen next, the suspense of the looming upset, that had myself, and many others on the edge of our seats. If you don't get up for that kind of performance, than fine, I am not here to change your mind about it, but I am just saying that me, as a fight fan, I had my heart in my throat until the last round, and thus, it makes my list.
I can't be more clear than that; I don't know how else to explain it to you.
You have Eubank/Benn as 1...
And you don't even list fights like:
Tyson/Holyfield I
Maidana/Mayweather I
Maidana/Broner
Castillo/Corrales
Hamed/Barrera
Morales/Pacquiao
Toney/RJJ
Fury/Wlad
??

Fury vs wlad...are you having a laugh....my brother in-law went to Germany to watch the fight and he along with many others walked out the arena after the 9th round the action was so poor ..It was an appalling fight with hardly any action fffs ...shocking u even having that on a list along with Jones vs toney...clueless

A fight doesn't have to be close/competitive for it to be intense, not to me anyway.
Fury/Wlad and Maidana/Mayweather I were intense because the underdog was fighting his way to a potential upset. That's HUGE in a big fight. Floyd had never been beaten. Wlad hadn't lost in 10 years.
RJJ/Toney, how can you not be on the edge of your seat for that fight? RJJ was a little over the hill, but the trash talk, the style clash, the fact that both were elite fighters and ring generals, that fight was a thriller.

Let me explain .....I can see your point with the leonard -duran fight ...maybe the commentating seems distant and so it's difficult to imagine what the leonard vs duran fight was like but I've read numerous books about the brawl in Montreal..besides watching it.,they reckon the intensity of that fight was insane.....they hated eachother and there was so much venom and spite in that fight......leonards wife fainted and had to be carried out the arena by the 5th round beczuse of its brutalality...it rained most of the night in the stadium and only stopped just before the bout and there was almost 50,000 most of them wearing bin liners as protection from the rain...savage inside fighting and they reckon there was steam coming from both fighters because the action was so intense and brutal....if you can try and read an old fight report on the Internet and then your understand., Duran actually knocked out leonards brother in the ring after the final bell went , read up on it fella.....hagler vs hearns ....look I've seen a lot of fights as a big fan of boxing and I was only a youngster of 12 when I watched live at a closed circuit at 5am in the morning....there was 600 people packed into the guildhall ...and the build up to fight was something and they also hated eachother , and when that fight kicked off the place exploded literally ...bear in mind I'm in the UK and it was almost morning but it was like you was there ...50/50 supporters all screaming for blood ....trust me mate ...never seen anything like it till this day in terms of atmosphere when boxing was involved....yep and the bowe golota fight was savage and the crowd was like a scene from a riot movie...savage and Lou duva had to be carried out the ring uncontious
Look, I won't argue too much about including those fights in a to 5 as I'd prob have them top 10. Of course it would be subjective to a certain degree. They are still understandable, unlike the fights that guy, loadedwraps listed.
That still doesn't excuse your list, the fights I responded to were nowhere near to being as competitive as the ones I or some of the others here have listed.

I didn't list any of those fights....
Ok, well, in my defense, I only skimmed over your OP and didn't realize you were talking about sheer brutality. My list would look different probably in that case.
My list is more along the lines of intense from a competitive standpoint, from a drama standpoint, but not regarding level of violence.

Maidana/Mayweather I
Maidana/Broner
Hamed/Barrera
Toney/RJJ
Fury/Wlad
These are the fights I took umbrage with. Cmon, you don't have to be a genius to work out they were nowhere near as competitive or intense, heck, RJJ/Toney was as least competitive as it gets and that's the criteria YOU used.
I have Eubank/Benn at 5...
Also, Maidana/Mayweather? You think that was more violent and intense than ANY of the fights I listed? Hamed/Barrera too? The guys landed like 30 punches a round. Toney/RJJ? The crowd was asleep half way through.
My list is not exhaustive and obviously subjective to a certain degree but if you want to list more intense fights, you can't be listing those, in terms of the fans, the punches and the sheer brutality. That's utter trash.

If I was making a top 10 then this would definitely be on it but watching it from home, the atmosphere was nothing like what the other fights felt (again watching from home). Especially the big British fights. The crowd is in so close, they are a group of real boxing fans not nationalists, alcohol has flowed, there was just a sense of pure violence and blood in the air.
Especially with Benn/Mc, that was a nasty, nasty fight between 2 nasty individuals.
Again, Hagler/Hearn would have made a top 10.
I don't feel Duran/Leonard had the same intensity in terms of crowd or the naimosity between the two.
Bowe-Golota was a fuk fest lol I genuinely forgot about this one, it had the riot right?

Dumb list without Morales vs Barrera

Hagler vs hearns without question
Duran vs leonard 1
Barrera vs morales
Eubank vs Benn 1
Bowe vs golota 1
