Hey,
I need some advice on which weight i should bust a gut to drop to. I used to box a few years ago at 72kg (was middleweight) but then got into my weight training etc. Now ive started boxing again and have a fight in September. I was 98kg! But ive managed to get down to 88kg in a month, how far should i drop? 81kg? Lower? Im 5ft 8 aswell.
Thanks in Advance!
this is really something you should be discussing face to face with your coach not strangers on a boxing message board
truth, no way anyone can answer this here..height does not =weight...people are build differently and have different assets
Thanks all for the feedback. Yeah its KG's we use mostly in the UK. Spoke to my coach and he says to go Light heavy BUT if I can get to that weight nice and easy and then its up to me if I go for Middleweight. I'll see how the sparring goes and how the weight loss goes and see if I still feel good .
Luilun IS the "stranger"/Southpawology
talked about HA Ha! I mean......that is a O.K. style but if it's right for YOU we can't know.
Nothing wrong with reading here! Nothing wrong with it at all! Your "Coach" might be the incompetent one.
Keep in mind that your "COACH" is only FRIEND to you! You should get your OWN MIND INTO THEM FIGHTS! "Coach" can hold you back believe me. "Trying to do what they want"/It's confusing. JUST FIGHT NATURAL! AS YOU TRAINED IS WHAT I MEAN. "FIGHT AS IF YOU ARE A FACTORY (on them moves!)"
Practice the "communications" at COACH. ]
Weight. Your 5'8". I am 5'8" and used to cut to Lightwelter the "old limits" (139lb). I *don't "think in the new weights". But....if you know them you compute it, O.K?
I gather your HVY (gonna use "the smart formula....." after!). 5'8" could be anything! Even 119lbs (*former classifications). 125lb next from 119.
132 next up from 125. 132LB you then go to 139 (where I "was" at!) next: 147Lb. Next: 156LB (I ended my ama. at 156), 165lb. 178 201lb limit then....201+.
Quart of water is 2- lb. You WILL be doing "some" drying out! It's not a big deal. Every 8 hr you DO NOT TAKE LIQUID, you are "drying out" two pounds.
I'm a "big time" expert on -drying out- water weight loss. Most boxers WILL do that! If you get "weak" trick is to get your strength back. Few hours "weak" is really Not "weak", "uncomfortable", yes!

I can't tell you things, such as, "specifics" on boxing a Southpaw. But, their is a lot I would help you with!

You will get to weak if you drop to far 178 division and try to emulate the Mike Tyson peek boo style with slipping and boobing and weaving just have some throw punches at you on a daily basis so you get use to slipping punches cause if you don't practice it you won't do it in the ring
You notice the training and nutrition forum by any chance? Try it.
And yeah - follow Southpawologys advice too.... take advice from your coach / trainer not random internet guys. He will know you best. And if you ain't got one, find one.

You weigh a lot for a guy who is only 5'8'' but ultimately, it's all about what you feel most comfortable at. If you can drop to about 81kg and still feel healthy, not affect your stamina, why not?
