In an era of catchweights, ducks and "marinating" he went straight for the jugular and is taking on Sergey Kovalev at his weight. That takes ambition and balls. It's also one of the best fights that can be made right now.
Dude deserves more respect and these kinds of moves should be encouraged as it's good for boxing, it's good for the fans and it's good for the legacy of the boxer(s) who steps up.
Here's to a great fight later this year and hope that other boxers might follow in his footsteps. :beerchug:
Dude won gold at light heavyweight. He didn't need to acclimate to anything, especially when his last two fights were in the light heavyweight division.
The only reason he fought at light heavyweight was because he agreed to move up in order to make room on the U.S. team for Andre Dirrell.
Middleweight was his natural weight class.
He did win gold... In 2004. He then spent the next 10 odd years at SMW. It takes time to get back up to size and feeling comfortable fighting bigger opposition again.
The fight is signed and going ahead, so what's the issue?
I didnt make the thread, you did. As if hes doing something unheard of. Kovalev will be his third fight in a row at light heavyweight. Hes doing what hes supposed to do. So whats the big deal here?

I've already explained what I meant by that earlier in the thread. Instead of going for Stevenson or Fonfara he went straight to Kovalev for his big fight. Criticising him for acclimatising to LHW before the toughest fight of his career is pretty ridiculous, especially since he has only started getting active again recently.
I was hoping this thread would've been a bit more positive but instead it descended into sh*t as usual. Then again, it wouldn't be NSB if it didn't. :lol1:

only took 5 years from the froch fight for him to try and fight a top fighter. not even to get a top fight, i'm talking try to fight a top fighter. something ggg does every single time he tries to get a fight but he's a coward? 5 year benefit of the doubt and the fight still might not happen. ward knows his chin is shaky and kovalev could end him. only when ward is ko'd will he get the credit you speak of.

My point is that I think Ward needs more preparation in the way of fights @ LHW before fighting Kovalev.
Right for the jugular? With 2 fights before Kovalev after all the time he's been inactive, it's more like the scenic route to the gallows.

That's because he exposed Golovkins tiny nuts.
Weren't you one of the people defending Golovkin not fighting Ward. Didn't want to see the "best fight the best" then did you?
No. I'd favor ward at 168. At 164, where the fight is a fair compromise, its even. Never said either guy was ducking the other because you can't duck fighters outside of your division.
Now fvck off.
No shame?? yet ya'll laugh at Ward being dropped by him 24/7...stay consistent man
I dont laugh that Boone put him down, I laugh when you clowns claim Ward is some unbeatable god that GGG would have zero chance with, when in fact he has already been on the floor, and would likely be on the floor again if GGG-Ward ever happens......
I don't see why Ward and Kovalev just don't fight next. Ward's had two fights at LH now and neither guy is going to be fighting anyone relevant next. It'll save HBO millions on two pointless mismatch events as well.
The reality is Monroe hasn't beaten anyone as good as the guys that Smith lost to so there isn't any true evidence that he's better. It's a matter of opinion.
You guys sure do love bigging up those slick bruthas when they get knocked out by your favourite fighter.
no shame losing to Boone. In case you forgot, Boone KOd Stevenson, gave Kovalev all he wanted, and put your hero Ward on the floor.

Bro, you saw 176 pound Paul Smith in the ring did you not? You think THAT was better than Willie Monroe? Context man, jesus christ.
And i saw Willie Monroe...garbage is garbage
Yeah and Joe Calzaghe had a 75% KO ratio. Don't try to BS people who've seen Sullivan fight. If you want to say its impressive beating Sullivan because he's a skilled fighter, fine, but don't try to pull "he's a big threat because he has a 67% KO ratio!" as if that means anything. Quite frankly, a guy who is a big puncher should have a higher KO ratio considering the level of opponents he's faced so far. Sure, he was able to KO shot to bits Jeff Lacy but went the distance against 9-13 Larry Pryor and 16-10 Joell Godfrey, etc. KO Ratio isn't telling us anything much at all, especially when we're discussing prospects who haven't faced good opponents yet.
Calzaghe's KO ratio is fool's gold, he was the beneficiary of ridiculous stoppages, the same way they stopped Murat-Cleverly when Murat finally started throwing more lmao. Barrera is the only person to legit stop him.
You act like lil g or Kovalev haven't gone 12 with no names lol.
Back to back title fight loses..and Monroe had done what?? Lost to Darnell Boone and had no championship experience...so yea he lost to Abraham 2 times and Degale..so id say he fought the better comp
