He'd be a strong contender, but there are plenty of fights to be made yet.
Off the top of my head these guys could all be in contention if the fights get made-
Klitchscko beats Fury + Wilder (any combo of these 3, really)
Thurman/Porter winner beats Danny Garcia
Crawford beats Postol + Pac/Bradley winner
Canelo beats Kahn and GGG
Frampton beats LSC + Rigo
Loma beating Walters and Rigo
Now, half these fights won't get made, and some dudes won't win all of them.
But, let's see what happens.
Ward could have a heck of a year, no doubt.
Maybe Loma if he were to fight and beat both Walters and Rigo
Those two wins would trounce one win over Kovalev, even though I think Kovalev is a beast and
Loma (really TR) is having a hard time getting the first part of this done and IDK if they even want Rigo so...Ward is looking pretty good right now if the Kovalev fight is actually going to happen.
Here are others I can think of who will have a better win than Barerra by the summer and would be in position to have another top fight that would put them in contention:
Crawford over Postol
Wilder over Povetkin
Fury over Wlad (or vice versa)
Barrera? :lol1: You guys need to quit acting like he's some top elite guy when he's not. Hasn't done shit to prove that yet.
Kovalev will definitely give him the chance to be, especially since he's moving up in weight and will be his second fight up there. LIke I said before though, I doubt he fights him this year. Hope I'm wrong.
You have to remember that other boxers may be doing awesome things too. What if Estrada and Chocolatito fight and Estrada comes out the winner? What if Wilder beats Povetkin and then goes on to beat Fury?
I agree with you about Estrada but that coward chocolate man won't fight him. He's said he's not fighting him for less than two or one mill. So hopefully Estrada fights the next best option
Yes indeed he would be a lock for fighter of the year even without fighting Barrera. Just the win over Kovalev alone would do the trick. Kovalev is top 3 pound for pound on just about everybody's pound for pound list. Ward coming up from 168 to beat him gets him that award.

This. Others fighters do exist and their accomplishment count throughout the year as well. I hate when these type of questions are asked, it as if the other fighters don't exist.
No if GGG beats Wade, Canelo, and BJS he'll have just as strong of a case. Depends on how the fights are won really.
If Ward gets decisions in both fights but GGG kayos all three of his opponents (which is very likely) he'll deserve the award more. If the opposite happens than the opposite fighter should receive it.
Because Pascal has been a joke for a long time and he fought him TWICE. Fought a food vendor, and fought a 50 year old man. If you can somehow glorify that, you have a far more creative mind than I.
I never said he was bad, only "overrated based on resume". That means he gets too much credit for the guys I mentioned.
Pascal kicked Dawson's ass, the same Dawson everyone says is one of Ward's greatest wins.. but Pascal beat him before Ward did... Pascal drew with a 45 year old Hopkins (that's how great even an old Hopkin's is)
It depends who's overrating him man, he's beating everyone brutally.. I don't really see people hyping him up like GGG. But he's still top 3 P4P IMHO
Ward-Kovalev will surely determine who's P4P #1. I don't care who wins that one, as long as that fight gets made.
Beating Barrera is expected...
But Beating Kovalev would be as impressive a victory as it gets...
Easily fighter of the year and the immediate rematch would line those pockets, for them both...
How is he highly overrated? He knocks out the best guys put in front of him, brutally too. Resume isn't everything dude, Pascal ain't great but he's the only one who got battered and knocked down. Hopkins is legendary, and old, but don't try to compare him to another over 40 year old fighter.. he is very special fighter who got out boxed thoroughly.
We'll see the fight this November hopefully

If he beat both of they convincingly they haters will say that Barrera was too green and the Kov didn't beat anybody and wan't that good anyway because he didn't fight Stevenson. Then they will say that he avoided triple G. If he fights triple G and beats him they will say that he was too small
The haters will never give Ward credit
There's no doubt. Granted, Kovalev is highly overrated given his resume, but Kov/Ward is the fight of the year and the winner is P4P king. No one else is doing anything more significant than this.
