There are 8 months left in the year and there are already 4 pay-per-views scheduled. I was updating the calendar today and started to put these pieces together. Let's look at the rest of the year.
April 9 Pacquiao-Bradley III
Okay so naturally this is on PPV. Manny Pacquiao is the currently the biggest star in boxing. This one deserves the price tag (especially given the undercard.)
May 7 Canelo-Khan
Canelo inherits the May and September Mayweather days because... he's Mexican and they are Mexican holidays. Despite the mismatch, it's two big names and it's going to be entertaining for about 5 rounds. Worth it.
June 18 Cotto-TBA (Kirkland)
This is where things start to get a little dicey. Cotto is coming off a loss. I'm not sure if Kirkland is speaking in coherent sentences yet. This card will NOT feature Felix Verdejo (who has his own headlining HBO card coming the following week.) I don't imagine this one doing well.
July 23 Crawford-TBA (likely Postol)
I'm willing to pay for this one. The 1 and 2 super lightweights fighting is fine by me. I don't care what the undercard is.
This is what is proposed thus far, but let's project the rest of the year.
August
Nothing. This is typically the time of the year StubHub has it's annual ritualistic blood bath fight of the year contender on some undercard.
September 10 or 17 Canelo-Lemieux
Ah, where did Lemieux come from? Let's first say that there's no way Canelo isn't fighting on PPV anymore until he loses. Next, Lemieux's fight with James De La Rosa was cancelled this past weekend. Why? Weight? Sure. Maybe. But why is that immediately we hear he's being worked into the Canelo-Khan undercard? An undercard that only has 2 fights currently scheduled. My guess is that it will be a set-up fight to sell Canelo-Lemieux. That Golovkin fight ain't coming till next year at the earliest. This is a worst case scenario. The best case scenario is that this is the Golovkin fight, but it seems pretty unlikely.
Late October Golovkin-Saunders
This is going to be a tough sell, but I think they justify it by saying it's a legitimate unification fight between two fighters who avoid nobody. Saunders has the highlights of dropping Lee around and Golovkin is Golovkin.
November Bradley-Vargas II (small percentage it's Pacquiao-Vargas)
Jessie Vargas is coming off the biggest win of his career and he's ready for a rematch with Bradley. Now, you may be asking how do they put Bradley in a PPV coming off a loss? He ain't losing. Either he wins this fairly or Bob Arum smile he wins this fairly.
December Cotto-TBA (Probably Andy Lee)
This is assuming that they don't make Cotto-Lee in June (which I think is far smarter.) Either way, Cotto's December fight probably makes it to PPV coming off of a nice win over James Kirkland in June.
So it looks like we have a PPV in 7 or the next 8 months. If we average the price out to $60 bucks for each one, it adds up to $420 for the rest of the year. That's a steep price.
What do you think of this tentative and projected schedule?
Are you paying for all of them?
now suddenly it becomes that everybody is going to want to pay and haymon won't be able to satisfy them all so his plan will backfire and cause his competitors to land major network deals.
Some of the networks we're talking about (ESPN, NBCSN, FS1) televised boxing before the PBC.
Is it your assumption that the networks that don't give the PBC a TV deal will just no longer televise any boxing?
You're right, Ward has no interest in ever fighting Kovalev. He just signed a contract to fight him and HBO is targeting Nov. 19. If Ward were serious about fighting Kovalev, he never would have signed a contract to fight him.
http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/15329/notes-dates-penciled-in-for-kovalev-ward-and-cottos-return
We'll see, it's as simple as that.
I just don't know what one thing has to do with the other I guess. I'm not trying to dog HBO or make HBO look better. I'm just saying Showtime's known schedule seems better than HBO's known schedule right now. Its not THAT serious.
Plus if Haymon fail or succeeds with PBC its very possible his roster could have a long term positive relationship with Showtime therefore making Showtime a better product.
In fact with the toughness in creating a NFL of boxing & how long that will take the better bet to make today is that Showtime boxing is helped out by their relationship with Haymon than Haymon takes over boxing. Hell I don't even think we know Haymon's plan tbqh anyway. Maybe Showtime is in his long term plans & Showtime becomes what HBO is now, but with guys being built up & becoming more popular with free TV & then throwing them on Showtime for their bigger/biggest fights. That is what is kinda happening right now it would appear. So if Haymon's goal is free TV 100% than that would mean he's a natural enemy to HBO, Showtime & either networks PPV arm & at some point heads are gonna clash with Showtime & Showtime would be either a willing party to their own demise or willing to risk their own demise on the bet that PBC fails right now today.
The whole thing is interesting I will say & I'm still curious as to how it all works out regardless, but I mainly don't see the problem with looking at HBO & Showtime schedule-wise even if PBC/Haymon has influence with that.
I agree......
No. I believe Haymon will angle to cut a deal with one or two of the major entities (Viacom/Disney/Universal/Fox).
If you believe that Haymon will cut one or two deals, then the HBO v. SHO/FOX/CBS/NBC/ESPN/FS1/Spike, etc. dichotomy that Haymon has set up isn't going to be around all that much longer.
At the point when these time buys end, it's certainly possible that some of the current PBC networks could be open to other promoters.
Top Rank and Golden Boy both have the capability to produce their own shows and as long as they still put fights on HBO/HBO PPV and Spanish language television networks they probably don't need to seek the same kind of money Haymon is looking for out of a TV network.
What both need is a middle option between Spanish TV and HBO/HBO PPV, and they'll both likely be talking to networks, trying to either get a TV deal of their own or at least TV dates.
And you can't just look at the HBO schedule vs the SHO schedule. Because really, it's HBO vs SHO/FOX/CBS/NBC/ESPN/FS1/Spike/etc.
If Haymon and his partners can edge HBO out of the business eventually, or greatly marginalize them, it would be a great thing for boxing fans. Being a boxing fan would be less expensive than it's been in decades and most if not all of the top fights would be able to be made.
So it's your assumption that all those networks (SHO/FOX/CBS/NBC/ESPN/FS1/Spike/etc.) will go into long term deals with Haymon/PBC?
I am not willing to pay for any of them because none of them are worth the price and only one (Pacquaio/Bradley) is PPV worthy. By this time next year, I will probably stop watching boxing altogether because every b-level fight will be on PPV.
Agree completely.
Pac-Bradley III is meh...not terrible, but certainly not a fight anyone (other than Bradley) was asking for. Not gonna pay for it, but I'll find somewhere to watch.
Canelo-Khan is a joke; HBO & promoters are hoping people get fooled by a two "names" and don't realize the fight is a mismatch.
Cotto-Kirkland is another joke, at least as a PPV. Kirkland has done nothing to earn another big fight, and there's little to suggest he is able to perform at the top levels of the sport.
Crawford-Postol is a good fight but nowhere near PPV-worthy. It's about time Crawford fought someone his own size, so I'm curious...but PPV? NFW.
Canelo-Golovkin? No way it happens this year, so not worth discussing.
Kovalev-Ward? No way it happens this year, so not worth discussing.
Canelo-Lemieux? Ugh. Lemieux shouldn't be back on PPV until he beats a top-tier opponent.
A second Cotto PPV in 2016? Hope not. Please no.
On the HBO front, it looks like 2016 is a disaster: hardly any good fights on HBO - only six fights in the first half of the year, all but one are mismatches - and a bunch of PPV fights that don't deserve to be on PPV.
Time to drop my HBO subscription.
What if Canelo fights one of those 154 champs like liam Smith
Nope not buying. Nelo said after the Cotto fight he had no problem what so ever fighting GGG. I understand the stay busy cash fight with Khan. He'll I'm gonna buy that fight. But after that I don't want to pay unless it's GGG.

I'm willing to pay for most.
Wasn't going to pay for Pac/Bradley but the undercard is what I'm really paying for.
Alvarez/Khan to me is must watch PPV. Guarantee fireworks and it's too big names. I seriously don't understand why people would complain. Boxing is after all entertainment.
Same for a potential Cotto/Kirkland fight. I'd be willing to pay. Hopefully the PPV isn't 70 bucks for that one, maybe 50.
Not willing to pay for a Canelo September PPV that isn't GGG though.
If it's Lemieux, I aint buying.

Crawford-Postol shouldn't really be on PPV
Crawford and Ward are the natural heirs to Floyd only they ain't bad boy enough to polarise anti opinion so they'll never be as successful financially though career prospects the Americans need not look any further for the sports next star.
Ward needs to get in the ring this is his time to truly establish himself. I see Arum guiding Crawford to the next level, they should have got him in with Pac,he'd have iced that fool and he'd have had the American ppv's nailed on for the rest of his career, gotta be Bradley vs Crawford if Bradley pulls it off. That fight would be colossal.
Crawford and Postol plus Ward and Krusher are ppv worthy, how the hell are going to sell. Saunders vs Golovkin, lmao this will be the lowest selling ppv ever.

Has he ever specified he is targeting Kovalev? He went up to 175 because A) it's getting more difficult for him to make 168 and b) it helps him maintain the illusion that he is chasing someone of note.
Before the Pascal rematch, as Ward was on as analyst or whatever, he was asked twice, at least by Lampley about the Kovalev fight. Ward did not, at any point mention the fight but rather that "that's what we're aiming for"...and that he is likely to have two fights before that, one of them being the Barrera match up.
Ward career of late, for someone who is supposed to be p4p no.1 has been a joke.
Lol, you can live in a fantasy land and lie to yourself all you want, just don't expect rational people to join you there. It's been clearly established by both sides that this is the goal. Things are a lot easier to understand when you aren't letting your bias blind yourself to the truth.
Salido-Vargas is June 4th on regular HBO. There's your HBO bloodbath for that time of year right there. If you're going to go through all the trouble to type that long of a post, why not make it accurate.
An over the hill salido against a prime champion. Gee I wonder who will win
You see it happening this year?Kov has a fight in Russia. And isnt Ward getting two tune ups? Hes going to have to fight in August or something if hes gonna fight Kov in November
Don't see why he can't fight March,July,November...
But based on the last few years it's probably unlikely..it's my most anticipated fight so I hope it goes down...even if it's pushed to December 2016 or January next year that's cool...
Which is why he went up in weight specifically to target him. Go back and try again troll.
