I say no
fighters have unified and become lineal in recent years with all the alphabet belts going around.
Wlad and Mayweather have over a dozen lineal defenses in their careers
its not fair to Joe Louis who was the man who beat the man and defended 25 times
If Wilder defeated 26 title challengers without ever winning the lineal title or defeating the other titleholders, should it be considered as he broke Louis' record
If GGG kayos wade.....someone said he breaks wilfred Gomez title fight ko record of 20...I say no because Gomez was the lineal champion the entire reign and GGG has not won the lineal title yet and Canelo is the real champion
Then just clarify the difference here, jesus christ is that hard? Once again you're so worried about what other people say/think.
People say Hopkins has the most title defenses at middleweight. Well, that's a fact. Now if you want to clarify and make a case as to why Monzons is better since his were lineal defenses, that's fine and absolutely respectable, you can do that, and people have done that and discussed it plenty of times. Nothing changes here; so if Golovkin ends up passing Hopkins at some point, we can point out the differences and clarify. At the same time, we should talk about context - Monzon fought in an era when there were only two belts. Hopkins fought in an era with four belts and Golovkin fights in an era with 5 belts (WBA regular & super belts, or is it 6, since the WBC has their own extra belts sometimes?).
So yeah, clarify all you want, that's fine. Just remember to talk about context too and try not to have such obvious agendas.
why waste time going through all that when trinket title defenses are not records. Just seems like a subtle way of inflating a fighters resume.....agenda, schmenda.......say you r opinion and move on. Me and another poster were discussing the topic so I made a thread to get feedback.....its not that deep....this is a boxing forum, not a political forum.
I know this goes against your original post - but I always ask bc the answer seems obvious to me - who should GGG have fought that he hasn't at 160? Martinez and Cotto wanted no part and GGG is trying to make fight with Canelo...so...?
sinc ecotto and Martinez arent relevant I wont even bring them up...Billy Joe Saunders, Andy Lee, Korborov, Jacobs, Quillin, or Canelo would be nice.
wlad wasn't really lineal for that long. he only became lineal after "beating" povetkin. some people incorrectly say he became lineal after beating chagaev but that makes no sense since the lineal title is won between the 2 best fighters. that was not chagaev since vitali was ranked above him. we must follow the rules and not create special rules otherwise that is an insult to past lineal champs.
nice alt scrub...this is about boxing as a whole....last time I checked GGG isnt the world of boxing
Roy jones is my favorite fighter but he never was lineal in his career. Its a fact. GGG fans dont like facts. I like him, i just want him to fight better competition. :boxing:

Stop it. You don't like GGG we all know it....Records are for the books, not for the fans...we all know a fighter worth by the looks of him in the ring, not in the books.

well GGG is going to break the record regardless he is now the wba super champ and all knowledgeable boxing fans know that he was the super champ all along.

It's a new era were the lineal champions like Stevenson and Canelo made a joke of it
beating the champion, like they did, is alot better than winning a trinket and defending it against fighters no one ever heard of....its his mandatory doe!!!
All jokes aside. those two should fight Kov and GGG but it doesnt change the fact that the earned their title in the ring. As of now they are the champion
on the flip side, fighters like Lennox Lewis, Hopkins, Mayweather, Wlad, Pacquaio, Marquez, Martinez, Tszyu kept them relevant(lineal/undisputed/unified champions)
would you consider Wilder the new defenses holder if he never won the lineal title BUT HAD 26 defenses?

They are also counting the WBA regular as defences while there was a WBA super champ. How the **** does that work, one org can have two world champions? GTFOH.
dont they count interim defenses too?
So I guess you want to change the history and record books.
Mike Tyson no longer the youngest heavyweight champion since it wasn't the "lineal title" he won.
You can longer boast about Floyd beating 25 championship since majority of them weren't lineal champions.
None of Roy Jones defenses count and no record he might have set counts neither.
I guess PBC was blowing smoke out their ass when Huck fought Gloweski saying he needed one last win to break the cruiser weight record of title defenses, none of which where lineal.
I can go on and on.
April 23rd a record is on the line and it might be broken.
your reign is only as good as your opposition,,,Hucks was pretty good but he never faced the other title holders
Jones didnt fight Michalcewski but look at it from this perspective. there was a point where he was ring magazine champion and he held wins over 8/10 of the top ten contenders.....with or without the belts he was beating the best in his division, he just doesnt hold a record because Michaelcewski was considered lineal. I am the biggest Roy Jones fan you'll ever meet but Im not gonna be a hypocrite just because I like him and he is my ALL TIME FAV...ANYone whose been on this site knows Jones is my fav
I don't know. When Charles Martin and Jessie Vargas hold world titles, and Leo Santa Cruz is a 3 division champion, I can't take these titles serious.
leo santa cruz arguably has the worse resume of a 3 division title....he is the wrong type of all time great lol

Floyd patterson is the youngest fighter to win the lineal world title.....Tyson was the youngest to win an alphabet belt....im not rewriting history...i am clarifying the difference.
Tyson was the youngest to win the wbc title.
Anyone who actually follows the history of the sport clarifies the difference
Mayweather still defeated 12 fighters who were lineal/undisputed champions in their career. and has won 4 lineal titles with a record of 21-0 in lineal title fights...... Who has done that in recent years? :owned:
You'd have to go back Ray Robinsons era, or Jimmy Mclarnin era in the 30s to see that and he only 49 fights
face it....these alphabet records are used to inflate accomplishments

Is it a new record if its not for the lineal/undisputed title like the previous 1 | BoxingScene Community
