This is a very unethical approach, but boxing has questionable ethics...
Perhaps GGG is legitimately is unable to make the weight ??? Perhaps he'd have no intention of making the weight ??? But the motives are irrelevant when they step in the ring.....
If GGG agrees to fight Canelo Alvarez at 155, (And is reasonably close in weight leading up to the weigh in, not sparking suspicion.) then steps on the scales at 157.5 (Or so) What happens ?
I'd asume GGG will lose $$$ as a penalty (As negotiated prior to signing the contract) and his credibility will become a issue at all future catch weight fights....
But I think that the pressure to continue the fight would be to great for Canelo to pull out at the 12th hour...
The WBC would have no say, as long as GGG was under the 160 pound Middleweight limit...
Canelo would still have to fight or vacate... What would Canelo do ?
Will his pride put him in the ring ?
(Like Lomachenko did when Salido was way overweight in their title fight.)
Thoughts ???

Golden Boy can't justify the PPV without Canelo vs GGG... Too much goe$ into this promotion.... It would be a complete debacle if Canelo walks.... Particularly if GGG makes a strong case about trying his hardest to make the weight only to come up short...
As despicable as the premise might seem, it's behind the scenes.... The show must go on.... I just don't think Canelo can walk due to a couple of pounds.... It's not about blame, (GGG would clearly be at fault) it's about Entertainment & results.... The result of Canelo walking is no entertainment for the paying fans....
The fight is a product for sale... The fans (Who pay for everything ultimately.) are buying this product... You can't pre sell the product and not deliver, that's disastrous.... The reasons (Beyond injury) are inconsequential to the customer.... You can't sell Canelo vs GGG then tell the fans to enjoy the undercard....
Like going to a restaurant and ordering and paying for Surf & Turf and getting only the appetizer and soup or salid... Then the waiter says Sorry, the chefs couldn't agree on how to prepare your dinner....
Golovkin did 100k-150k PPV buys for his fight; to act as if Golovkin would be bringing any real audience with him for the fight is laughable. Golovkin-Wade has been on sale for weeks now, at a building that "Golovkin sold out", and the building still has like 40% of the seats available.
If Golovkin misses the weight, Alvarez-Rosado isn't as far a step down as folks think from Alvarez-Golovkin; recall that Cotto-Alvarez was deemed so big a fight that the MGM simply bought up all of the tickets for themselves.
Alvarez is the clear A-side fighter for the fight, and Golovkin dicking out on the weight, for whatever reason his team tries to come up with, is an example of blatant disrespect for Alvarez. Canelo will give him the extra time to sit in the sauna and boil off the last of that weight, and if Golovkin can't get to Canelo's weight, I don't see Alvarez's pride allowing Golovkin to still step into the ring with him.
Alvarez still fights, delivering the Texas fans what they likely wanted to see ayway; he just won't be fighting Golovkin.
Couldn't Golden Boy just refund the PPV money to fans and make it a free fight and use the penalty money from GGG to recoup some of their losses?
Nope... If Canelo walks, there will be no purse because there will be no fight... GGG only pays a penalty if the fight goes on... That penalty money would go directly to team Canelo if the fight takes place....
The PPV would be cancelled if Canelo walks.... But the PPV infrastructure set up to handle the fight would be a total loss for GBP and HBO.... The promotional costs for advertisement, among other considerations, would be almost a complete loss as well...
They could show the undercard on HBO for subscribers..
The reality is, Canelo would fight and GGG becomes tainted if this scenario plays out..... I don't think GGG would pull a Salido.... I was interested to see if Canelo's fans believe he would fight regardless.... Kind of a mixed bag so far.....
Personally I feel Canelo would man up and take the fight..... But I feel some Canelo fans don't understand that the post was designed to solicit their faith in Canelo.... To pound their chests and say "War Canelo" !!! Not designed to question his heart, because I do think 100% that he fight anyway.....

GGG wouldn't do that. He won't accept a weight limit of less than 160 in the first place and rightfully so. The fact that he said he would fight Mayweather at 154 has nothing to do with this situation. Mayweather wouldn't be defending the world middleweight title. Canelo is though and therefore is required to defend his title at the proper 160 pound limit or forfeit the title. He got away with not fighting Khan at the 160 pound limit because the smaller Khan also wanted 155 and didn't complain. GGG will not put up with it.
Alvarez walks out of the fight, without much qualm. Golden Boy, hopefully being of some intelligience, will book 1-2 other junior middleweight/middleweight fights on the card, to have options in place.
Alvarez isn't a chump, and Golovkin, as an opponent, likely doesn't move the needle all that much more than a Gabriel Rosado would move the needle.
If Golovkin steps onto the scale at 157.5, Alvarez will give him the customary 2 hours to sweat off the weight, and if he doesn't, Alvarez walks from the fight (leaving Golden Boy to fill in the spot with someone else on the show).

If he comes under 160, he can still potentially fight for the belt. Most likely GGG takes a huge financial penalty for that, and possibly Canelo outright pulls out of the fight.
I'm just looking for GGG to stop Cantnelo's hype train. He ain't ready for someone who isn't much smaller than him.

Totally valid point....
But in order for team GGG to undertake a maneuver like this, they'd have to be more than confident in the outcome...
Even with the penalty, the hypothetical makes sense....
A Canelo vs GGG fight is likely the largest PPV fight out there.. (Floyd staying retired.)
If GGG would have made 10 million plus but loses half or even more at the scale...... He still make 3 -5 million or more to beat Canelo on the biggest PPV venue in boxing... Then Canelo will have to think about chasing GGG for redemption... Most likely at 160...
There is much to gain if team GGG is reasonably certain of the outcome.. A very bold move, but the clock is ticking on GGG's career.
I am sure ODH will have the penalty be much more than that-likely Manny's $10 mil per lb suggestion.
ODH can always make money with Canelo so its to his advantage to do what Bob (IMO) did with Manny-wait until you run out of options.
Canelo has many more options, including other unification bouts, that GGG just doesn't have. It just looks like GGG is going to have to make major concessions to get what he wants.
Those Canelo fanatics would have scheduled several months of their life around this fight.. Taking time off from work and paying for hotels... Would Alvarez really do that to his fans ???
All the money Oscar and HBO would have spent in the promotion, PPV broadcasting and venue costs...
REALLY ???
No way Canelo cancels over a couple of pounds, no way !!! GGG loses $$$ at the scale and the fight goes on..
Canelo's ego is huge, but not that big... He's not stupid...
It's happened plenty of times, it's about the principal.
If you miss the agreed upon weight, you have no room to complain if the fight is cancelled. It wouldn't be Canelo's fault nor would he be accountable for the fight being off, it's all on the person who failed to hold up their end.
The fight would likely be cancelled.
You're not going to 'get one over' on the biggest name in boxing.

I remind everyone that Canelo is a big step up from what GGG is used to facing in the ring. The very real possibility is that he will lose to Canelo even if he "pulls a Salido".
He'd get no belts and likely pay a HUGE penalty, all of which would have to come from his money because his team will get paid based off the purse.
I don't know if it's worth the risk.

WBC would sanction the fight if this happens, as long as it's within 160. The penalty clauses are generally very lenient. For example, when Paul Smith came severely overweight against Ward, he was only fined $37.5k - generally chump change. But obviously that depends on the contract.
But the real question is what would happen if Canelo pulls out of the fight on the night of weigh in. Does WBC strip him immediately? Does he get another x number of days/months to negotiate with the mandatory?
Personally, I would lose a lot of respect for Golovkin if he pulls something like that. It's extremely unprofessional. If someone doesn't want to fight you, then don't make them.

Not true.... He still fights for the belt regardless.... 155 is not a recognized weight division, 160 is....
Canelo is the 160 pound WBC Middleweight division Champion... As long as GGG is at or under 160 pounds, it is still a title fight.... That's the Fact..
Even if it wasn't a title fight, GGG beats Canelo is epic for his career... He'll never fight for peanuts again. ( He's already beyond that now.) Canelo would have to chase GGG eventually, to gain redemption..
Debatable but fine. He gets the belt and fights for free. Everybody likes to work for free.
Then he loses the opportunity to gain the belt he covets and probably fights for peanuts. Is it worth it? Dumb fans will say yes but the person fighting knows better.
