He agreed to take the fight because it's a big money tuneup fight for a bigger fight against GGG.
Do I personally like the fight? No. But it didn't matter who he chose for his tune up fight, people were going to criticize no matter what, so he might as well make the tuneup as big (money wise) as he can.
Truuuuu. However, if he does decide to fight GGG in September, I would prefer him to fight at or close to the MW limit against a MW contender that has a pressuring style that can prepare him for GGG. This does nothing for Canelo in terms of preparation for Golovkin.
Unless Canelo is using Khan to prepare him for another fighter with the type of speed and activity that Khan fights with. I.E. Bradley/Pacquiao winner, shoot even Floyd rematch if he decides to come back for #50 and lineal MW title.
Because Canelo is a hype job and he knows it he has no intention of taking on a top fight and why should he he's still a cash cow in mexico and among many of the chicanos state side
Any middleweight who fights a welterweight who isn't even top 5, and does so at middleweight, is a b*tch. I don't care who they fought.
Saul Alvarez is a punk if he fights Khan. You can pretend otherwise all you want, doesn't make it any less true. Defending it just makes you a b*tch's b*tch.
Damn u mad...
It's an easy money fight... Total mismatch but a lucrative one..
This honestly is a borderline freakshow fight, and it will be the train wreck no one can look away from..
Agreed
There is no way in the wide world that GBP will sacrifice Canelo - look at their roster, they can't afford to
It also confirms to me that K2 have hopelessly mismanaged GGG as they have allowed both Cotto & Canelo to duck himNo everybody knows GGG is an all-time great puncher and he could permanently wreck Richie Cunningham as a super star of boxing. It's rumoured that GGG turned the lights out on Kovalev and he has never been staggered in a major bout.
If GGG grabs another worthless trinket he will be slowly becoming Wlad with an impish grin. GGG can't force anybody to fight him if they have options to duck him. We have seen that for three years and counting.
if i'm managing canelo i'm waiting for golovkin to get old, which is exactly what they're doing. i wouldn't take that fight unless they held a gun to my head.
Yep. Taking the Khan fight is only further confirmation of this.
1) Because it pays well and if he loses, no big deal, he's a heavy underdog anyway. And if by chance he wins, then his stock is massive. Same reason he wanted Manny and Floyd. He doesn't have that much to lose apart from the fight itself. But losing to Canelo isn't going to lose you much credibility is it?
2) Also, his team might be cashing out. If he isn't getting Floyd or Manny and he doesn't seem interested in fighting Brook, then Canelo must be the next biggest payday. Otherwise when do they make money off him? he's basically an inactive fighter and only interested in big fights, so they have to make something or nothing.
3) maybe his obsession with Floyd had landed him in the deep end with Canelo haha. Floyd telling him to go get some wins last week might have riled him up and went and picked the best common opponent ha. He's wacky enough and obsessed with Floyd enough to do it.
But to be serious, i'd say the truth is somewhere between 1 and 2
If you're managing Canelo, do you make his first true MW fight against GGG?

that's really not the intention. the intention is to keep a fighter busy and in the gym, get him a pro fight where a guy will be trying to win and wearing an 8 or 10 oz glove, and get him paid.

Would YOU tune up for a true middleweight like hard punching Gennady Golovkin by fighting a 140 lb. has-been?
I can't think of anybody MORE DIFFERENT from GGG than Khan.

management thinks a lot less about flack from guys on NSB than you'd think :lol1:
they took an easy fight. i'm holding out hope that they'll eventually fight golovkin for the title, and that this is just a way to stay in sahpe and make some money in the meantime.
it doesn't look like GBP has any other real options with canelo than to fight golovkin. this 155 lb business does make me thing they're putting it off, however.

And who can he fight that would be remotely close to GGG?
It's a big money fight before he has to tackle the monster that is GGG.
IF Canelo decides to retire after GGG (if he takes a beating he might),
at least he had a big money fight before that.
