why some boxers stay obscure and why some are mainstream?

actor labeauf (?) just doesn't have it, yet he still ends up in big payday movies, it's who he knows growing up as a child actor. It's all about that "it" factor. Some people have it and others don't. The same thing with singers and actors...etc

Pacquia and Mayweather had 5 years of hype and anticipation which is why it was bigger than it should be. I think the former biggest/highest payday fight before had the same type of years of anticipation and hype (Lewis/Tyson). Only reason why Mayweather/Pacquia fight was so huge was because of Obama. Seriously. People and the whole world started paying attention to minorities.

Canelo could be a superstar especially if beats lil g and keeps winning. Yeah I give him the best chance but he will have to learn some English, at least enough to sell himself to Casual Americans

I don't think we will see another Boxer that will come anywhere close to being as big as Mayweather and Pacquiao was, I know a lot of you are wishing for your new favorite fighter to reach that level but it is not going to happen especially the way boxing and its fans are so divided on EVERYTHING. Next Crossover Superstars in Combat Sports will all be from the UFC. Jon Jones, Conor McGregor, Ronda Rousey, Robbie Lawler, Aljamain Sterling, Luke Rockhold, Sage Norcutt (even though he lost yesterday still has Superstar Potential at only 19). They also do a better job of marketing than boxing does. Rousey is already a Crossover Star to be honest! Boxing will have its new Stars but next Real Cossover Superstar, I don't see that fighter yet. I see guys with Potential but most of them are missing something. Either they don't have the Look, Charisma or they can't Speak English. I do think Tyson Fury has the best chance but he is not "PC" enough for America, they will use his past comments against him forever and he likely will never get any endorsements here like Lennox had because of past comments which I think is complete BS Bottom Line! Some people just have it, and some don't. Some guys don't even need to be a loudmouth or ****y like Floyd or Ali was. A guy like Mosley has always been classy but i think he still had something about him, same as GGG or Manny. I think being a nice guy but a killer in the ring is part of the appeal for them. Or maybe someone like Hatton had that image where he was just the same as the people that followed him, and that was part of his charisma in a way. But someone like Ward on the other hand, brilliant in the ring but he's hardly Mr Charisma is he? That guy could put a glass eye to sleep in and out of the ring. Floyd could be boring in the ring for most people but people still watch and listen to him out of the ring, that's the difference between him and someone like Ward. Basically there isn't any real reason. Some do get pushed more than others though like Manny and GGG off HBO, but they still had to keep their end of the bargain and deliver. As someone said above, it's like singers. Some people just have it, a quality that makes people interested in them. Sometimes its hard to explain exactly what it is. People think Charisma is being smooth and cool but it's not always, sometimes the quietest or nicest people can be charismatic, especially if they have some strangely engaging qualities, like being able to wreck people in a ring.

It's just like being a singer or something; being really good helps, the right connections helps, having a fan friendly style helps, and being able to attract fans with your personality helps. But ultimately some guys just don't stick; people just don't care about them. HBO eventually had to stop pushing the Klitschkos in the US because most Americans just weren't interested. Incredible as Paul Williams was, he was no one to anyone except us hardcore fans. Demetrius Andrade is a 22-0 world champion, and no one gives a **** about him either. Early in his career, Floyd Mayweather tried to do the Leonard/Mosley/De La Hoya thing; the all-american good guy act. But people didn't dig it, him playing the nice guy hero just didn't stick. So he turned on the villain role and it turns out that is what fit him and made people interested. Meanwhile Shane Mosley has always been the classy nice guy and he still did very well for himself. It's a lot of different factors that go in to making a popular fighter and it's different for everyone.

Is this the boxer's fault or the promoters? Seems as if some boxers stay local and some become mainstream in their first TV fight. I think Andre Ward was mainstream since his first fight. He was always on the HBOs and the Shotimes, etc. I guess it's who you know? Kinda like some music artists who blow up in the mainstream without any local or indie cred. Regarding the MMA/boxer Holly Holm, I looked up her boxing record and seemed as if she had most of her boxing fights in her hometown of Albuquerque. I think Ronda Rousey was pampered to be mainstream since day one since she had no boxing experience or record. So it's who you know right and what insider people took you in under their wings right? Like Andre Ward was an Olympian so he had people looking out for him to nurture him to be a mainstream fighter, kinda like Mayweather as well. In other words someone's rolling the dice who becomes a star just by having mass media exposure? If you are a classy, charismatic guy with a crowd pleasing style, hands of stone, and a granite chin, like Tyson Fury, you will be destined to become the face of boxing.
