This fight in my eyes is the biggest win in Jones' illustrious career....As a die hard fan I learned a lot watching the metoric rise and fall of one of the greatest fighters to ever lace up a pair of boxing gloves
I not ashamed to say that in his prime, in my eyes, not based off resume or accomplishment, but in my eyes he was the greatest fighter who ever lived. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion but you'd be hard pressed to pick some one as the favorite over Jones from 154-168...175 he didn't have the one punch power but he was definitely more accurate and elusive
I had a bad feeling about this fight when it was signed....I was hoping Jones would stay at heavyweight or go for a title at cruiser...it wasn't meant to be
What I witnessed was Possibly the greatest fighter I've seen take a beating and come back to win......something he never had to do because he was absolutely dominant, even in his 30s
I chose this fight because
A) it proved to me Jones could come from behind to win
b) this was the beginning of the end of Jones being a great fighter
C) We saw a side of Jones we've never had to see and he took some hellacious shots and didn't budge.
d)My son was born the exact day at 2:21pm...I couldn't leave the hospital just to watch the fight so I had to wait for the results. I knew something was wrong when I read Majority decision. When I watched the fight I saw the last of the Roy Jones I grew up on. Its sad he is still fighting today but Its ironic that the day my son was born was the beginning of the end for my hero
this is for my boy uncle Roy
TBH I kinda outgrown Roy....He was the guy who got me into boxing..
I loved his speed and ****iness and elusiveness. But now I don't even enjoy his highlights half as much as say James Toney's for example...Roy just did so many things wrong.. Watching him leap across the ring with a badly thrown looping punch just doesn't do it for me any more.. Still can't deny his greatness.
Jones vs Eubank, Watson, Benn, Collins....fights I would have loved to see
wouldve been nice
Great post mate.
I agree entirely with everything you've written.
I've always thought that it was Roy's best win. A lot of the time, there's a big difference between a fighters best performance and his best win.
What a lot of people don't realise when looking at the Tarver fight, is that Roy only had a few months to drop that weight. Many people believe he had 8 months, because he fought Tarver in November and he'd beaten Ruiz in March. But they don't realise that Roy still had his HW physique in the summer months, in the hope of securing a mega money HW fight. And when one didn't materialize, he signed to fight Tarver in September.
You can see in the fight that he was absolutely exhausted. If that had been an old 15 round fight, he'd have been in serious trouble. Then if you factor in how fresh and motivated Tarver was, the stylistic problem he presented Roy with, and the fact that Roy made history by reclaiming the LHW belts after winning a version of the HW title, then it was truly a great win.
There'll never be another Roy Jones.
you can say that again

damn I wish I could give you some more green bro....I wasn't a die hard Roy fan because I knew he and BHop would eventually fight again and Hop is my ace!!...so I just admired Roy from a far and YES, he's the BEST I've EVER seen in my lifetime...hands down!!

naw....this was Jones last fight he won that truly mattered.....If not for someone named Hopkins, we could've got Tito vs Jones when they were p4p greats between 2001-2003
It was kinda sad watching that fight, both were among my favorites in the 90s....IMO tito never had a chance. The fight was thought of because of how Tito was kicking major ass from 147-160. I was pissed Hopkins won, I bet on him and won some major coin. I was in 11th grade
I mean a last great night for Tito, because he gave a great showing of himself in the Jones fight, against a much bigger man, while Tito clearly wasn't in world class shape. He came in and won his fair share of rounds and toughed it out, when most expected it to be a blow out.
Roy in his prime was truly a marvel to watch. I feel like he is the least appreciated great out there. In terms of athleticism he may be the greatest fighter ever. He was a force of nature and in his prime could have been competitive with some of the best heavyweights of all time.
GP does great work, I haven't watched that one in a long time. I skipped the part after Ruiz. I am going Christmas shopping with the son-in law and i don't want to be down.
LOL. Crap Roy was a showman. The traps Roy set were freakish, mere mortals get smoked doing that stuff, and he did it to push the action; guys would never have let there hands go if didn't leave the door wide open.
History will be kind to him when he finally retires.
people seem to forget after beating ruiz roy dropped back down and beat tarver (one of the best wins of his career) somewhere along the way people have tried to revise history and pretend like he dropped weight and got knocked out straight away. roy should have been even better in the rematch since he had more time to acclimate but he just got caught. don't need to make excuses for that.
The weight drain n pounding he took at that weak state changed his punch resistance forever
Jones in his prime took shots n didn't flinch... Had a good beard n people forget he took his and gave it
Not to mention he was 35+. To take those kinda shots for 12 rounds, particularly downstairs smh. And he took a bomb in the 8th that rivaled the left that floored him in the rematch. How he pulled that out in the championship rounds makes it his most overlooked victory.
My favorite Roy fight. Took a lot out of him too. He took some bombs and remained upright but I think that ruined him.

Gorilla productions....what happened to him...by far the best tribute and the music... The downfall had me teary eyed

That is a big knock on Roy. Thanks for the effort, link and personal story.
"you'd be hard pressed to pick some one as the favorite over Jones from 154-168...175". I wholeheartedly agree. I have watched thousands and thousands of hours of boxing and I have never seen someone work his craft like a Prime RJJ, truly a force of nature.
I always thought it was weird how Roy's punch was the first thing to leave him...You can see it here, he can pull the trigger there's just nothing in the clip.
Well, he wasn't hurting these LHW guys that badly compared to his SMW/MW days. He also relied on speed to land those punches, catching them when they didn't expect it. What happens when they can see the punches coming? They anticipate it better, the punches that you don't usually see coming are the worst. His power wasn't amazing at 175 already, he was also facing a big guy in Tarver.
Keeping on track with Jones, how about Tito v Jones, the PR great moved up to a division he'd never been in and was part of a competitive fight. Jones won but Tito won his fair share of rounds and made it hard.

you can tell he was conserving energy for the later rounds......but I see what youre saying....the only shots that had power were the rights to the body
I think it was a combination of him not overcommitting and yes father time played a role.
I knew this was the end of the rode for Jones but this fight here stamped him as an all time great and people waited for years to see how he handled adversity
Too bad it took him going to heavy and straining to lose that muscle......his complexion, muscle definition and everything was out of wack....you see it before the first bell rings
TRP you're one of the best posters on here. Maybe the best.
thanks man....I piss a lot of people off on this forum but it comes with the territory of varying opinions
