It's what this boils down to, isn't it? Nothing new has happened boxing-wise. The fight is STILL on, as far as I know. Only difference is the WBC tried to extort.... er..... collect a total of $1.1M from Cotto, and Cotto basically told them to shove the belt up their collective a$$. All of a sudden the level of hate increases. Go figure.....
How does the WBC come up with the $300k "sanctioning fee" amount? What's it for? Would Ginger have to pay the same amount if he was the one holding the belt? Remember... this is the WBC, headed by another Sulaiman. I think these are legitimate questions.
Cotto still has to pay the $800k.
The $300k excuse is him trying to avoid his legacy being that he blatantly ducked GGG, and took his ***** ass back to PR.
My God please do some reading before posting sh?t like this. It is noted that Cotto and the WBC agreed that the fees would be $800K and an additional $125K with the promoters both paying an additional $25K for this fight to take place. What Cotto is frustrated with is the fact the Mauricio Sulaiman waited 4 days before the fight to not reduce the fee of $300K which has been done on a number of occasions for other fights, Mayweather, De La Hoya, Pacquiao and even Cotto in the past normal negotiating. What this does indicate to me as one previous poster noted. The WBC just witnessed there cash cow retire and will now be scrambling for ever dollar available.
To say Cotto is ducking anyone is baseless. The man has made a living out of fighting. He is 35 years old has his mental health in tact and will make $30-$50 Mil on his last 2-3 fights. The issue at hand is not extortion but rather the WBC being an entity that recognizing an era in which it featured three of its top stars Mayweather, Pacquaio and Cotto all retiring within a year and are looking to secure the most pennies possible. I would side with Cotto on this one as I'm sure they accepted a negotiated rate for the fight for Mayweather and Pacquaio to take place and that fight grossed over $600 Mil in revenue.

Canelo paid the fees and agreed like all fighters do. Like Mayweather has. Cotto dropped the belt to avoid Gennady, Cotto is a COWARD. End of.
Cotto has fought damn near everyone in his divisions and my guess is this is his last fight. If he wants to save 1.1 million dollars, why the hell not???? If this is indeed his last fight (like I believe) then you can't be too surprised...it only makes logical sense.
Likewise, you call this man a coward who hasn't really ducked anyone who was reasonably his size.We know he isn't a proper MW-it was good enough for him to beat an over the hill injured Martinez, but the reality is-he is the smallest man in this division...you crave for GGG to fight a small war torn fighter with one last fight in him, but would do anything it takes to keep GGG away from Ward.
Hopkins moved up 2 weight divisions-he had the stones to, even Adrian F-ing Broner moved up two divisions, but GGG wouldn't think of it when it mattered.
It looks bad because he essentially was allowed by the wbc to avoid GGG and then claims it's too much. If he wouldn't have avoided GGG he'd never have been in this situation. Cotto doesn't want to pay for a decision that HE made. Let's call it what it is...a disgrace. I love Cotto but he did what everyone thought he would and what us fans defended him saying he wouldn't. It's HIS fee that he brought upon himself. He wants to avoid GGG and not pay the fee it cost to do it. Wbc is shady, I'm not denying it...but this is all on Cotto.
I get where you're coming from and I've never been one to claim that Cotto hasn't expressed hesitation in facing GGG, but my point is that the bullseye is aimed in the wrong direction. Cotto was originally allowed to claim the MW title, which in my mind was wrong, because Cotto is not a MW. It's like GGG going for the HW title. But why is Canelo skating on this one? Why all the hate directed at Cotto? Because he's got the belt? He doesn't have it anymore, so that should satisfy the haters. Yet here is Canelo, way bigger than Cotto and more in GGG's ballpark..... and his people have done every dance step imaginable to avoid GGG, even so far as demanding GGG would have to come down to 155. But it's Cotto that gets sh*tted on.
You're right about the $800k. But face it.
Cotto-GGG was never going to happen before Cotto-Canelo (if at all).
$800k was the price for Cotto-Canelo to happen.

exactly, their is a price for ducking (cotto ducking GGG).
Its bull**** because 800k of that cash was Cotto's penalty for not fighting golovkin. If he had fought golovkin instead of dodging him, he wouldn't be paying the 800k.

No, you're right. Makes no sense for a former 140-pound fighter who is marginally big enough for 154 to get in with a natural 160-pounder. But let's turn our attention to Canelo. Will Canelo ever get in the ring with GGG? At 160, which we all know is WELL WITHIN his size range?
THAT.......... is the question.
I agree, that is the question. As a boxing fan, that's a fight I really want to see. I like Cotto more than Canelo, but I'm pulling for Alvarez because I would love to see him fight GGG.
It's a long shot, but it COULD happen. Cotto? Never in a million years.

3% of your purse, or there abouts, is the standard sanctioning fee.
Fighters pay it because having a belt makes you much more marketable and gives you leverage in negotiations.
Cotto can afford to not give a f*ck because he is going to retire soon, and already has a big enough name to not need a belt.
The big question for me is whether he is trying to avoid paying GGG his $800,000 step aside money.
I'm glad that Cotto let go of the belt. He isn't a real MW fighter, and he's not a real MW champion. He would never, ever get in the ring against the man that everybody agrees is the best at 160. So why hold the belt? Why pretend?
I respect his decision.
