If Cotto had decided to kept his WBC MW title he would had lost $1,450,000. He had to pay 300K in fees plus another 25K by Roc Nation. Also as up to this week Golovkin and his team were negotiating a 800K step aside fee, for Cotto to keep his belt and be champion for this fight.

How about leaving the weak division and fighting better competition genius.
right, heaven forbid we actually expect champions to face other champions. We should only care about how much money they make, because there's some sort of self-validation that comes from counting another mans money?
my hero makes more money than your hero. lalalahahahahajajaja :boxing:
Something like that?
1. We get a competitive Cotto-Canelo fight.
2. GGG gets his precious belt.
3. No ****ty GGG-Cotto mismatch
Everyone should be happy here. Nothing to complain about.
not much else you can do when the other champions in your division wont face you.
How about leaving the weak division and fighting better competition genius.
Why would anyone care about Cottos finances
In case you forgot this is NSB....Non-stop Bytching, and Non-Stop Budgeting LLC
Never saw so many so called sports fans discuss another persons money....lol.....news flash, they aint giving you any :twak:
Golovkin's team is real smart, they got 800K for practically nothing and now they get the WBC belt as well if Cotto wins.
Great strategy by that team.
not much else you can do when the other champions in your division wont face you.
So cotto did the smart thing, plus win or lose he is entitle to a WBC title fight at 154.
Cotto is a boss !
You're boy OFFICIALLY DUCKED Golovkin.
So so shameful. Your boys career is over! Watch Saul whoop that boy too.
Cotto is going to lose on Saturday so no point in paying a 300k fee for a belt you will be handing over to Canelo this weekend anyway. Better let the WBC strip you, let Canelo pick up the belt and keep that money in your pocket.
And from my understanding the step aside fee was paid to GGG in order for the WBC to allow Cotto to negotiate a fight with Canelo coming in as the champion. If they didn't pay him the WBC would have just upgraded GGG as the full champ before his last fight but GGG wanted to fight the Canelo/Cotto winner for the belt and the payday so he took the money.
From the ESPN article: "According to a source with knowledge of that agreement, Golovkin was paid $800,000, and after having already paid a portion of the step-aside fee, Cotto felt that having to pay another $300,000 to have the WBC sanction the fight was too much."
GGG took the money because he's not a moron. Everybody knows Cotto would never fight GGG no matter what, so from GGG's perspective its much better to be avoided with an extra $800k in your pocket than it is to be avoided for free.......

I would say that the source cant be trusted, but they at least got ONE detail right. If you run the 2nd paragraph through Google Translate, this is what you get:
"Puerto Rican middleweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto was stripped of her crown of 160 pounds, the same who had planned to play Saturday against Mexican Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in the Events Center Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas."
lol epic
1. He already paid the step aside fee to Golovkin
2. How does this make Golovkin a hypocrite?
3. Do you know what hypocrite means?
4. Can you spell hypocrite?
5. 800+300+25=1125, not 1450.
6. How the hell did you even make 1,450 out of those numbers???
They already lost the 800k.... wait what?
OP didn't think this out too well

Epic thread TS
Cotto's promotors Roc Nation paid 800 K to GGG's team to avoid fighting him, instead to fight Canelo.
But then WBC also wanted their piece of cake and asked 300 K, Cotto rejected that.
So WBC stripped 160 belt from Cotto.
He paid it because the title gave him leverage in the Canelo negotiations because Canelo wants the title too. With no title on the line, Cotto-Canelo is probably a 50-50 split on money, or maybe even 60-40 Canelo's way. But having the title gave Cotto the necessary leverage to get a better split from Canelo, which is why he paid GGG the $800k.
Wise up man.........
Just read it' he didnt pay ****

The step aside is because of the title, not because of the fight!
But the title is on the line, so somebody is footing it. I thought it ultimately fell on him because he's the champion making the voluntary
Complaining about Cotto's money when he wouldn't of had to give up so much if he obliged by the rules and fought his mandatory. :lol1:
Golovkin is untested and beat nobody so it would be an easy tuneup for Cotto and would of made the Cotto-Canelo fight even bigger with a larger purse by knocking out HBO's darling.
Check the second article. Why would Cottonlose 800K over 300K. I dont think he will just give someone 800K. The only reason had to pay that amount was because of the title. Without a title he dont need to pay no fees to no one.
