Vargas looked like a shell of himself post-Tito, or at least his chin and reflexes did. Rivera had him down and on queer street and Flores stunned him too. I expected Oscar to be too quick and skillful for him but I wasn't expecting a stoppage win. That was a smart, thrilling performance by Oscar. He and Floyd Sr. had some nice synergy.
That punch in the first that made Vargas clutch his head was the beginning of the end for what could have been an amazing career. Pretty incredible that he recovered and gave a good effort. Special fighter but that last round killed him. It was brutal. And yeah perfect plan by Oscar and sr. In their fight.
If I recall he got jammed for steroids for that fight. But yeah, he was huge. I remember when it started he was bullying Oscar into the ropes I think he got tangled in them. I thought he as going to destroy Oscar after that. Really underrated fight.
Cotto just has a small build so would look even tinier than Oscar.

I'll reserve an opinion for after Cotto/Canelo. I think that fight will tell us all we need to know about this fantasy matchup. Except for Vargas being bigger than both.
That Vargas looked like a totally different fighter than the prime version. Just ripped and huge. The Vargas who fought Tito looked leaner. But he would still tower over Cotto for sure.

i remember when Oscar fought Vargas and I couldn't believe how much bigger Vargas was. He'd totally dwarfed cotto and beat him up bad. Vargas was a whirlwind in boxing, gone just as fast as he came.

Cotto was strong as hell at 140(he was a killer at that weight), but at 147 he got walked down by Margarito and Clottey, Vargas was even bigger. The problem for Cotto is that he is the smaller man his stamina and that Vargas had a right hand you had to respect. Cotto doesn't like the right hand and would get walked down by Vargas.

Really good fight. Vargas struggled a bit with good movement and didn't have the fastest hands or reflexes. Cotto would be able to catch him with some pretty good hooks upstairs. Might even build a lead but Vargas' size, strength and steady rhythm would take over the down the stretch. I like him to win a UD or maybe a stoppage on cuts.
everyone has said Vargas beats him but you.
Now take a step back and look at yourself and the rest and why is that?
could you get a tingle inside your body all warm and fuzzy when you think about cotto and the rest of use dont? lol I think you do.
Because Cotto is being severely underrated in this thread.
I think Cotto would at least stand a chance, based on skill. I just don't know that he would go in with the right game-plan. He let Margs light up his body when he should have just been working that jab and GTFO of danger from the gate. This fight, just as any fight against a much larger, stronger guy, requires an extremely tight plan and no deviation. If he didn't play it agile and swift with Vargas he'd take too much punishment and get killed after he slowed down.
People underestimate Cotto's skills and power, I think he can hang with Vargas in the early rounds and make it competitive. But eventually Vargas' size and power will catch up to Cotto, who tends to fade against guys who make him work. Once Cotto fades, he'll be easier to hit and it'll be lights out for him.
Vargas would knock out Cotto within 7 or 8 rds. I don't think Cotto has even fought or been hit by a big, natural 154 lber with the power and boxing skills that prime El Feroz had.
Ya'll right, Vargas was a naturally bigger dude, but Cotto has that crippling body shot. I think he has enough power regardless of size, and would wear him down.
I think Cotto would slip something between Fernando's gloves, and dust Vargas with something big.
He's had a few fights right at 147, and near that weight early in his career, but you're right, he's essentially a career 154 lb. fighter with a few MW fights.
For the sake of argument, let's say the fight's at a 150 lb. CW. Both comfortable weights for both guys.
He might be smaller, but Cotto was strong as a bull at the lower weight classes.

If you're talking about Fernando, he didn't fight at 147. In any case if you mean at 154 then Vargas by TKO. He bullies the smaller although more technical Cotto.
