Boxing is simply outdated..that old school mentality of no need to increase the HW limit is dumb.Dont agree? Look at the current rankings...All but one guy is about 220 in the top 20 ...out with the old in with the new...boxing needs to wake up is the reality....225 plus Hw or Super HW is needed. Even the amateur boxing with 225 SHw division is smarter, they have it already.
The old saying a 200 pound guy will beat a 250 pound one is dumb! Even if one existed that's ONE guy.
Super heavyweight in the amateurs is 201lb+
Manny Steward always said there needed to be a super heavyweight division.
as soon as you do that, you ruin being the heavyweight champion of the world, which should be the ultimate prize in sports.
if heavyweights get too big, you simply add a super cruiserweight division with a limit around 225 or so.
but "heavyweight" should always be the name of the unlimited weight class.
I've always wondered why they weigh in for Heavyweights when there's no limit.
I assume its just for show but Could you technically just say i'm not doing it.
theres a point where they get so large they start to decline from lack of coordination (valuev)
unless we see some revolution in selective breeding/genetic engineering we dont really need to worry about seeing a division of valuevs in our lifetime
as for wlad, he's not THAT much larger, its the way he carries it compared to other 240 lb men and retains his technique that makes him unbeatable
Heavyweights is where man fight man no b#itching about size.....I'm 5'9 170 pounds I just got in a fight with a guy that's 6'3 about 230 pounds and I didn't give a **** even though I got my ass handed I held my own.... that's how Heavyweights boxing is..
WTF??? This is a sport. People over the age of 14 like to see sporting matchups that are evenly contested. You guys with your backyard fight fixations...
Because f*ck it. Historically heavyweights normally were around 200lbs because a fight with more than 15 rounds usually benefits peak humans beings fighting at their natural size. So for instance when you get over 5'11, lung size stays relatively the same. Someone who is 6'5 with excess muscle would be at a disadvantage against a elite 6'ish boxer fighting at his natural weight because of his lungs and heart working more efficiently and less. Also once you get over 6' speed and movement jursastically decreases along with athleticism. For example it's easier for a 215lb Mike Tyson to fight a 250lb Bruno then a 150lb Pacquiao fighting a 165lb Canelo. Speed and athleticism drops off greatly once you start to get over 200lbs
That is the whole idea of being a heavyweight. You are big enough to fight any boxer regardless of their weight. Boxing has rarely had a giant for a champion. Some of the best heavyweight champs in history were not that big and they defeated very large boxers. Here is the weight of some famous great heavyweight champions when they won the title. Marciano and Dempsey weighed 185. Louis weighed 198. Jack Johnson weighed 192. Sonny Liston weighed 212. Foreman weighed 218. They weren't giants but no giant could beat them. No weight limit is needed for heavyweights. It never has been and it never will be. Giant heavyweights are usually slow and clumsy. They don't punch harder than normal size heavyweights because their punches lack speed and technique. They are also short on stamina and often don't take a punch well. Fury and Wlad are about as big as good heavyweights get. Any heavyweights bigger than them will usually have their size work against them.
I've always been curious about this.
Why is there no weight limit in the heavyweights, but all other divisions are very strict on weight?
Heavyweight is the only openweight class in boxing; show up at whatever weight you want and fight. Basically how the sport started, tbh
if at some point 300 pounders becomes the norm and they need to start a super cruiserweight division, so be it.
but heavyweight should always = unlimited. i hate organizations that have "super heavyweight" titles as heavyweights are supposed to be the best fighters on the planet, with no restriction.
at the end of the day, any weight limit is the equivalent of the WNBA. a bunch of people competing to see who is the best among the worst. boxing obviously makes a lot of money by having weight classes, but anything other than heavyweight is a sideshow and i've never really cared who the 800th best fighter on the planet is, even if he's the best fighter at a certain weight.
Idk, better there should certainly be a Super Heavy Weight Division vut even then that wouldn't help much.
The main problem I see is guys 7 inches taller than there opponent, they weigh the same but a 230 6'2 guy has very little chance against a 6'9 guy who isn't a slob and somewhat atlethic.
For a time, there was little need. Today, generally, not enough quality guys to make 2 separate divisions. I personally think 220 needs to be it's own division. That would have killed a lot of historic matches though.
