Re injured his back in training for the GGG fight. Remember Golovkin was supposed to make his HBO debut vs Pirog as a late replacement for Geale. Indeed a shame, Pirog was a great champion and a great fighter who would have been anyones strongest win if they had him on their resume.

I think Golovkin would've beaten him but it's a real shame he didn't get more chances and the injury robbed us of some real good fights. He was avoided by Martinez and that's a fight he could've won as Sergio was already slowing down at that point. Probably too late for him to ever get back to that level sadly. I think Pirog was a pretty good fighter with a lot of potential. The GGG fight would have been interesting Add to all of this, he had balls to sign to fight GGG, being stripped of his WBO title in order to pursue that fight. This happening at a time where GGG was barely known
