GGG is a poor mans Martinez.
At GGG's age now, Martinez went on to fight Williams (2), Pavlik, Chavez and Cotto. Unless GGG discovers his scrotum and fights these kind of names in the next 6 years, he'll never be a great.
Yes to be a real star. is too late. But it all depends at what age he retires.
at 40 would be a good couple of years to having step ups and sell alot more.
in the meantime K2 could get some names under their brand and try to be competitive with other promotions.
According to reports, last weekends PPV did around 150,000. GGG is approaching 34 years of age, is he too old to become a household name? A PPV star?
GGG is on the right track, apple commercial, first PPV, always win in impressive fashion. I do think they should have priced the PPV at 19.99 to draw in more buys. Also it probably does hurt him that his english is still not improving so he cant really do late night interview shows etc. If he gets the winner of Canelo/Cotto and wins in impressive fashion it will be a huge boost for him though.
This is true. I mean from legends or HAF's this seems to be the defacto-bonafide route to truly being p4p. I mean even little Roman Gonzalez has swerved 3 weight classes..
However, i don't mind GGG staying at 160 and unifiying all the belts. He still needs to face Quillin, Lee, and Jacobs. If he can catch a ring mover like Cotto and out punch Lavarez then he is convincingly an all time great at 160 after Hagler. Because Hagler had already beaten some undisputed 160 fighters even before reaching the age of 30.
New generation of internet fans ironically cant get free empirical resumes on the web and realistically compare. Theory and fanboyism is more practical.
I think beating ward means more right now than beating Canelo and cotto. It isn't worth more, but it means more.
Besides, cotto and Canelo may not choose to fight GG next and then he gets what, an Andy Lee fight for the MW title belt.
It will be hard if GGG doesn't step up and beat someone people perceive is better than him. He can keep beating the guys at 160, but will real boxing fans (the ones that put the sport ahead of nationalism/race) respect that considering 160 is seen as weak.
GGG has the charisma, amateur skills and the power to be a force at any weight. IMO he will not be the star he could be unless he steps up the competition.
he has no opponents to blow up against at 160.
without canelo or cotto, ggg is ****ed at 160.
Jacobs and quillin fights will never happen and nobody gives a damn about lee vs ggg.
chavez jr stopped andy lee so we know what golovkin will do to him.
unless he gets canelo or cotto he will be moving up sooner than later. and even then, the one guy at 168 that people wanna see him fight will be fighting at 175.
degale, jack, abraham, lee, johnson, heiland, saunders none of these guys will help ggg blow up
There's a vacuum at the top, Golovkin will fill it.
I don't see him moving up, he's effectively a PPV fighter at 160 now.
Financially, only Froch could provide the incentive to move up and that isn't happening.
Nobody in boxing will be a superstar in the USA, Canelo is a superstar in Mexico his last fight was watch by 23 million people in mexico..
USA is UFC country
ufc has only cracked 1 million ppv buys 8 times in 192 ppv events.
Floyd cracked 1 million ppv buys 7 times in 15 ppv events.
usa is ufc country doe
Not at all, no one can touch him at MW for years.
Golovkin is going to blow up, he's just getting started.

um, how do you figure? most of the people who bought golovkin-lemieux probably also bought canelo-lara. even if we were optimistic and just added the canelo-lara and golovkin-lemieux numbers together we'd still only get 500k, so where does the extra 250k+ come from?
You don't just add two numbers together and assume that's the maximum number of viewers a fighter gets. You look at who's fighting, the demographics, and the potential. People want to see star fighters going at it, but more than that, they want to see a toss up match up that has the appeal to be brutal/interesting/exciting.
Not just that, but this fight would be setup after a post-Canelo victory (assuming he wins). I don't think Canelo vs Cotto pulls in less than 900,000 views, and carrying a win over Cotto to a fight vs Golovkin would setup a huge fight (maybe not as big as the Cotto fight, though).
For instance:
FMjr vs ODLH pulled 2.4 million PPV buys. Floyd had never cracked 400,000 PPV buys before in his first 3 PPV fights. At this point in time, ODLH was a star, but the maximum PPV numbers he pulled was 8 years ago at 1.4 million vs Trinidad. A year prior to that, he did 925,000 vs Mayorga, and before that, 1 million in his defeat to Hopkins.
600k is the absolute most i could ever foresee golovkin doing. mayweather had more than a decade to build his brand; golovkin's "real career" effectively began when he was already 30. i view him as a sort of "interim face of boxing" until someone younger and just as dazzling comes along
If Canelo vs Lara pulled 350,000 viewers, and Golovkin vs Lemieux pulled 150,000, I'd imagine a Canelo vs Golovkin pulling at least 750,000 viewers, assuming there are no other huge PPV fights around the same time.

I think having Mayweather vs Berto, and Canelo vs Cotto so close to Golovkin vs Lemieux tires out the regular fan who would want to purchase PPV fights. I can't imagine most people wanting to buy 2-3 PPV fights in 3 months.
$75 for HD Mayweather vs Berto
$75 for HD Canelo vs Cotto (I think)
$60 for HD Golovkin vs Lemieux
Either way, it's not the starting point we all wanted. I honestly was thinking 250,000 would be a good start, but that didn't happen. I thought it would do better, but then again, I misunderstand just how well known and popular Gonzales is. Boxing fans know him, but the regular fans don't. It's a shame because Gonzales vs Viloria + Golovkin vs Lemieux was such a great match up. If they had managed to sign Stiverne or Jennings vs Ortiz there would have been no doubts on my mind that the card was PPV worthy.
golovkin is already a star in boxing. To become a superstar is another story.
This.
Floyd and Pacquiao are high-tier superstars. GGG is a mid-tier star.
Maybe. If Cotto/Canelo winner do fight him and he wins, he builds a name very quickly. If they duck him, then it's possible.
It also depends on how well his skills age. He doesn't over rely on speed and has good basics, so he should be effective into his late 30s.
If he loses before beating a big name (for ex if he go DQd vs Lemieux), then it's highly likely.
Even if it's too late for GGG, if HBO and K2 are smart they will use GGG to make other fighters (or at least attempt to) into stars.
They've been getting Chocolatito on his undercards and that's a good start. Now they just need to put more fighters and try their chances.
K2 has Usyk, why not give Usyk a try?
Top Rank should try to negotiate something with K2 so they could allow Lomachenko to fight on GGG undercards.
You know I'm trying to get my boy, Loma, some spotlight.
They have to find other ways to create Stars or even Superstars.

Any top 10 at 168. Anything less he would be criticized too heavily. Look at Martin Murray. Dude already moved up to 168 and top 10. There's no reason why GGG still needs to be at 160. The only obvious reason is because they want the WBC from Cotto or Canelo. That's the money ticket. I'm sure he'll vacate after that. No need to fight Lee or Quillin from there. Risk is too much to tarnish the 160 record. Just my theory on all the bull K2 and Sanchez have ran with, plus GGG has never ever verbally stated he wanted a piece of Ward. Only thing we get is from his mgmt word of mouth, not GGG. Practical
Lee or Qullin would not be a risk but it would add to his middleweight legacy if one of them is a beltholder.
As far as the thread topic, golovkin is already a star in boxing. To become a superstar is another story.
