What do you mean?
Also Louis was used as the perfect propaganda tool by America, he kinda was built to be great by the media machine at the time.
What do I mean? Are you thick or something?
Hero's of their era for sure.
Dempsey and Gene ducked black fighters though. I read Gene wouldn't even spar with blacks. No hero's of mine.
I agree with you to a certain extent. Thing is though, whatever the personal race related opinions of men like Dempsey and Gene, organising a white v black heavyweight fight in the US at that time was almost impossible. There were threats of violence and riots by mots white fans, many blacks would be attacked on the streets and the promoters, managers and the local authorities could not promise a professional event.
So I can understand why champions would be reluctant when getting in the ring with a black man.
Times where different obviously. Sam Langford and Jack Johnson were not supposed to be great... not even Joe Louis to some extend.

Dempsey is a good example. Gene Tunney, Max Schmeling... heroes of their era.

Who do you think are the legends in boxing? What, in your opinion, did you think they did that made them legendary?
Carlos Baldomir was the lineal welterweight champion, greatest of his era.
Arturo Gatti was once ranked as number one at LWW and that's an achievement no one can ever duplicate.
Victor Ortiz was once the most feared welterweight on the planet, he destroyed the ATG Andre Berto.
Speaking of Andre Berto, he's a two time world champion dontcha know?
Roy jones jr for pioneering his own style and beating ATG's and hall of famers with speed and athleticism and boxing iq
Henry armstrong for being a little guy with a big heart and undeniable style and drive moving through weight classes
Salvador sanchez for being much like duran and sugar ray robinson in that he had such a great blend of offense and defense and toughness mixed with great skill
Willie pep for tremendous speed and defense with quick hands and great tactics and fundamentals at such a early time without youtube .
All the famous old people are legends, the guys from the early 1900s through the 80s and 90s. The guys who were unique, who fought better than anybody else, the champions and two-time, three-time champions. Also the guys who smiled and made it look easy, guys with breathtaking movement (Sugar Ray Robinson.)
Also the guys who transcended the sport (e.g, Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Muhammed Ali)
And the guys who raised hell, liked to fight (e.g, Dempsey, Marciano, Duran, Tyson)
And all the great american heavyweights, whose accomplishments now appear well beyond our reach.
The heroes (e.g., Sugar Ray Leonard, along with so many others)
