Was clearly to the back of the head. But clearly an accident, think the ref should have given the guy time to recover(if he was so sure it was a rabbit punch) and if the guy didn't want to continue, call it a KO in favor of Sergioka.
If the ref saw an illegal punch land and the guy falls the ref should call the punch illegal instantly. This ref did nothing when the punch landed. Then he bends over the downed fighter and looks at him and maybe talked to him and then decides it was an illegal punch. If the ref saw no illegal punch then he has no right to guess there was an illegal blow.
I presume he did see the punch land "illegally" but was hoping that Young would get up and continue fighting.
Imo, it was still a bad call by the ref though. Punches landing on the back and side of the head are inevitable in a boxing match and should only be deemed "illegal" when they are deliberately aimed.
Otherwise, every damn fight is going to end in a DQ or a NC.
I watched the punch a few times at .25x speed. Because of the quality it's very difficult to make out in what direction his head was facing. Either way, he was stupid in ducking his head and coming in head first. It does seem possible that it caught at least partially on the back of the head, I just can't tell. It looks like the ref was right there though, so I wouldn't pick my view of the action over his.
That being said I think a NC would have been a lot better, a draw makes no god dam sense.
looks like he just cuffed Young with a shot that hurt him
Young weighed in at 193lbs for this bout

The ref was a piece of sh*t and robbed him of a legit KO win. The referee is supposed to go by what he actually saw and if he saw an illegal punch then he calls it the second he sees it. This ref saw no illegal punch but somehow decided there was an illegal punch 20 seconds or so after it lands based on what????? This was another Kovalev KO spoiled by an idiot referee.

That was a KO. The ref fell for that, unless it was a rabbit punch or a clear foul, that should have been a KO. I have seen plenty of fights where the fighter gets hit behind the head and it wasn't called.
Reminded me of Orlin Norris against Tyson, that was a coward move.
didnt sergy see him back at the hotel and called him out for it?
lol yes, Kovalev wanted to finish it. Apparently the guy said "no no, that's illegal".
I once asked this question to Dan Rafael in his chat; he said it depends on the commission. Some call it a draw some a no contest.
Pretty ****ty way to blemish a guys record California calls them no contests. That's how Saul Rodriguez got his draw. Accidental headbutt
thanks for the video - it does look like a normal hook, but it's hard to tell due to video quality
regardless, the main question is why it wasn't a no contest
