To be honest, I'm more impressed with kovalev than GGG. Someone like Andre ward I feel would destroy golovkin. My feeling at the moment is he's a bit overrated
Average fighters don't make easy work of the guys he has fought. Not world beaters but in Macklin, Geale and Murray, he had legitimate contenders and he took care of that.
Kovalev does indeed have the better wins and is doing so impressively. As for Gonzalez, I've only seen him a few times but I have to admit, the guy is definitely a whirlwind talent. A friend of mine was over when his last fight was on and I told the guy that Gonzalez was good before the fight. After the fight, he was like "This dude is a beast, he could be P4P#1" and that was his first time ever seeing Gonzalez in action.
I've been on him awhile. He's been the best fighter in 3 classes, has a fairly clear win over another guy who has shown elite chops (Estrada), beat one of the better Straw champs in that division's history (Niida) and walloped Yaegashi who was on a hot run. He walked through Sosa who, while faded, beat Segura in a war and was competitive with Yaegashi just a couple fights prior.
With Viloria, we may see how he takes another massive puncher. He hasn't seen the sort of quick counter shots Viloria has and BV, while inconsistent over the years, still has plenty in the tank. If Floyd retires, and we go on quality of foe on 10/17 (Viloria is WAY better and more proven than Lemieux), AND Gonzalez wins strong, the only way he doesn't go to number one on all those lists (he's two now) would be his weight class.
No but his popularity might make that a discussion. Kovalev has beaten better and in bad ass fashion. The guy poised to move to #1, if Floyd retires (hahaha) in a lot of ratings (Ring, TBRB, this site's, ESPN) is fighting October 17.
It ain't GGG.
It's Roman Gonzalez.

I agree, GGG has beaten everyone he has supposed to, mostly in devastating fashion.
Just a thought though. Whilst I hate deflecting usually, do you think GGG's resume would look nearly half as bad if GGG was part of a super 6 tournament where he had no choice but to fight the best consistently. Or really the other way around, what would Wards resume look like had the super six mandated fights not taken place? The comparisons just arent fair in my opinion
There aren't six fighters worth a tournament at 160. 168 was loaded at that moment and Ward made the most of it. I think what was there to fight made it matter more.
Relative to the division, Murray, Geale, Macklin, and even the fringe Rubio at the time were all top ten foes. He's beaten more top ten Middles than anyone else currently active in the class. Murray and Macklin were pretty good fighters.
Want to argue Middleweight isn't very good in general right now?
I'm all ears.
There aren't that many good classes.
But if GGG elects to be a career Middleweight, and he might, he's beating who is there who will face him and if he cleans out the class, he'll have beaten the quality available.

Now top 10 opponents don't count as "quality" wins?

So a fighter with ZERO quality wins at age 33 is elite? Man you got low standards
Now top 10 opponents don't count as "quality" wins? What about Paul Smith level opposition, is that a "quality" win?
And looking at Ward's resume; Kessler, Froch, and AA. Dawson was drained in the ring (doesn't matter whose fault is was but he was a dead man walking) so I don't count that as a quality win. Dawson was having a mental breakdown as well and has since unofficially retired.
Ward's resume is littered with virtual unknowns like Smith and Pudwill. The best wins of Ward's career have all come against guys that are all retired now. Besides AA, all of Ward's best wins have come against guys who don't box anymore. Does that mean that Ward beat them into retirement or that Ward caught them at the ends of their careers?
Ward????
When Kovalev was presented the opportunity to showcase his talent vs a quality opponent (Bhop), he jumped all over it. When ggg was presented the opportunity to showcase his talent vs a quality opponent (Ward) , he passed
Bhop was in the same division
You want GGG to move way above his natural weight to fight Ward, why do you want him at such a disadvantage?
Top Fighters nowadays only tend to move up if they outgrow their division or they get paid to do so.
Lets stop pretending that your lust for wanting to see GGG lose so much is hidden behind a justified crusade where GGG NEEDS to fight Ward. Get a grip
If you think ggg is overrated, you should kill yourself..
"Omg Ward beats him". What a scrub... Lmao... Only idiots think ggg is a hype job
Ya lol....
But GGG loses to Ward doe
A much bigger Ward who himself is an exceptional talent. The fact he has a chance against Ward speaks tons
Is GGG the next P4P#1 guy?

Case 1: LHW vs LHW
Case 2: MW vs LHW (172) at SMW
Somehow, those situations seem a little different. Can't put my finger on it but there is just something different.
Is GGG the next P4P#1 guy? Maybe, maybe not. Is he an "average" boxer? Nah, I can't admit that, he is stopping guys who have never been stopped, some have never been down in their careers. He looks kind of robotic and basic but guys who just have power and nothing else tend to start taking losses against guys who can make them miss and counter well. GGG still is able to trap guys along the ropes and his jab, honestly, is pretty scary; he might have a top 5 jab in the sport.
He has shown that he gets hit somewhat frequently and whether or not he is allowing opponents to hit him, the punches are landing.
I would put him as well above average, and his amateur pedigree supports that he is skilled. Maybe not elite (yet) but worst case he's like a B+ boxer or A-. If he shows up against Lemieux and boxes him to pieces to the point where Lemule can't even hit him and then KO's him, well he might just be elite.
Average is the guys Golovkin is taking out in 3 rounds every few months. Clearly Golovkin is more than that.
If you need to go all the way to Andre Ward, arguably the best fighter in the world, to find someone who beats Golovkin, then clearly you think he must be pretty good.
He's certainly not average. You can see that by just watching him fight.
If people think he's overrated, well that's up to them. I suppose we will tell in time.
That said, losing to Ward wouldn't make him an average fighter. Nor would rating him less than Kovalev...as both Ward and Kovalev are good fighters.
... Kovalev is younger and he just got lucky: he managed to have Hopkins and Pascal into the ring...
... What big shots from the Americas dared to face Golovkin into the ring? None...
Ward????

murray geale macklin and rosado are good quality opponents and golovkin destroyed all of them easily.but in your twisted head those guys are complete bums total cans.all boxing publications have him in their top 5 p4p list.
If you think this bunch are good quality opponents, again your standards are low
please name them. I'll give you froch, Kessler, and Dawson despite being a zombie. After that there's no difference. Bika can't throw a straight punch, Abraham is a guarded robot who hides in Europe and is no better than Martin Murray. Ward fans act like he's beaten prime Hopkins, Jones and Kovalev.
B.S. Every one of them is superior to anyone on gggs resume including Murray
Hes clearly better than average that was a bit exaggerated to flock some of the golovkin fans but from what you hear about golovkin and what I see from just watching him, people are making him out as the new foreman or Tyson of the middleweight devision which I cant really see. Will find out when he starts facing some great middleweights but I cant see him being undefeated for a long period of time. I assumed people dint think I thought ward was going to blow him away lol just makes you sound stupid for trying to point that out. mayweather canelo, Hopkins pavlik etc (boxers defusing and painting destroyers) ........destructions. Kovalev looks more unbeatable and more of a monster in his devision. This guys jabs to the body can put you down, golovkins looks the much easier to hit and easier guy to outbox. Will see what happens but for all the hype.....Im not that impressed, seems more of a super provodnikov or povetkin with a bit more skill.
... You really know your shit, kid... You should be proud...
