One matter is settled: The contract weight for the fight will be 155 pounds, five less than the middleweight limit of 160 and one over the junior middleweight limit of 154, both sides told ESPN.com. But this is not the sort of catch-weight fight anyone ought to get in a lather over. Neither fighter has any kind of advantage at that weight. In fact, it’s about as even as you could ask for in terms of the weight. Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs) has had his three previous fights -- wins over James Kirkland, Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo -- contracted at 155 pounds. Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) weighed 155 pounds 13 months ago when he knocked out Sergio Martinez in the 10th round to win the middleweight championship, and he weighed 153½ pounds when he knocked out Daniel Geale in the fourth round in his first defense on June 6. As for the when and where the fight will take place, it’s not set yet, but it is almost certain to take place in Las Vegas, although there has been interest from both big arenas in New York: Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden. There are two leading dates for the fight: Nov. 7 and Nov. 21. If the fight, which will be on HBO pay-per-view, takes place Nov. 7, the MGM Grand will likely serve as the host. That's exactly my point. Neither are 160 pounders (or 154 apparently) so if one comes in at 156 and one comes in at 155 whats the difference? Why are you gonna have a catchweight for no division? Aaaahhh ok I got you know. Agreed. IMO the 155-156 bs thing is probably just to get people talking more.

Why are you gonna have a catchweight for no division? 155 is MW according to everyone but Canelo. So Cotto went down to Canelo weight and did him a solid, no one should be complaining about anything.

I wasn't for the Geale cw, but this cw fight... the weight shouldn't even matter. He's been fighting at 155 for how many fights now? That's exactly my point. Neither are 160 pounders (or 154 apparently) so if one comes in at 156 and one comes in at 155 whats the difference? Why are you gonna have a catchweight for no division?

This will be a possible fight of the year candidate. Would love to see it in Las Vegas the week after the Mayweather fight in September. Can't see Canelo wanting to do it in NYC and Texas isn't big enough of a stage for it.

I want Canelo to win, just to give GGG a decent opponent at 160. (We know Cotto won't go anywhere near Golovkin.) But I think Cotto could take this fight. Canelo has stamina issues, whereas Cotto is very active. Canelo wins fights, but never impressively. And he sucked, sucked, sucked against Floyd.

they can fight without a title and there is nothing GGG or the can do about that... Agree 100%. I don't watch fights for shiny belts. I like to see the fights I like to see regardless. I say chuck those belts in the garbage and fight.

For this fight to happen, both have to sign on to fight Golovkin. The winner would fight GGG. Canelo vs Cotto should not happen if they don't sign on to fight Golovkin. they can fight without a title and there is nothing GGG or the WBC can do about that...
