some of these boxers dont understand the business side of boxing. you cant just SIMPLY win a fight. you have to win and be EXCITING. TV networks and fight fans don't give a damn if you can win a 12 round decision by boxing and moving all night especially if you're an up and coming fighter. you dont attract new fans by jabbing, clinching, moving all night to a victory. look at what happened to clottey after the pacquiao bout. he now realizes how much he f*cked up.
klitschko, ggg, kovalev, canelo dont need to talk much. they can let their fists do all the talking. but guys like malignaggi and mayweather who arent able to excite fans inside the ring excited them outside the ring by having a motor mouth at media pressers and by talking a lot of smack towards their opponents..
lara, rigo, andre ward and all up and coming fighters should enroll in an evening course in marketing 101.
But with contact sports, the rules are changing to make the game more safe. NFL ball is a pass happy finesse league now and you can barely lay your hands on the QB without getting penalized. You can destroy a defenseless receiver or crack back block anymore.
Your ignoring that aspect of it. They are headed towards becoming a 2 hand touch league by 2025.
You missed the point of my post. That point being that all sports modify their rules to make their sport more exciting.
The NFL felt that a passing game was more exciting than a running game so they amended their rules to make it a passing game. And it's worked! The NFL has never been more popular. The NBA has amended their rules to make the game more offensive. Baseball wants to speed up the game to make it more fun. Hockey has changed their rules. Soccer has changed the offsides rules. All sports do this in order to draw more butts to stadiums and eyeballs to TV's.
In boxing, since there isn't a central governing body the only thing that can be done is for the individual to step up and make himself must see TV.
I'm sorry but this is the most ret@rded fu.cking logic I've read. At the end of the day winning is all that matters whether it's as boring as watching paint dry or edge of your seat excitement getting the W is what counts.
Its the reason why Tracy Mcgrady or Vince Carter won't be in the HOF, yeah they could dunk nice but they where losers who didn't win anything. I guess San Antonio should return their rings or New Jersey Devils should have their names erased from the cup because they were boring, like come on.
Sports is about the best going against the best that's it , if it's exciting its a bonus like holy sh.it people that think different give your head a shake
Having this train of thought is basically co-signing mismatches why should elite fighters ever fight elite fighters when they could beat down over matched journeymen.
That whole baseball is boring sh1t is coming from the African American community. No racist sh1t here but they are the only ppl saying baseball needs to change to attracted more African Americans. Why??? Hispanics, Asians and white Americans of all ethnicities love the game the way it is. But old school AA baseball legends see no more AA players dominating in baseball and blame it on the game. African Americans rather play football or basketball now in Days.
This is dead wrong and beyond fugging stupid.
You really think baseball made changes to the pace of the game because of Black folk complaining? That would mark the first time in American HISTORY that any American institution made a fundamental change (without bloody protest) to accommodate the whims of Black folk.
Participation in youth baseball is down all across the board, not just in Black communities, for a variety of reasons (scarcity of fields and participants, rising costs to participate, diversification of kids' interests, kids specializing in one sport at younger ages, etc). See this article for reference.
Come on, bruh. Blaming Black folk for some isht the Commissioner of MLB and tv networks want to happen is silly.
No.
But there are constant changes to these sports in oder to try to make them more exciting. Football has constantly changed their rules to make it more fan friendly. So has basketball. Baseball just recently tried speeding up the pace of the game because they found that most young fans found it very boring.
All sports understand that entertainment is the most important part of bringing in new fans. ($$$) So they adjust accordingly.

It's better to be boring and win than exciting and lose. Those who complain about somebody being boring is usually a guy who lost to a boring fighter.
Well said. And it takes a disciplined, tough minded fighter to block out the criticism.
The weak minded fall into that trap and end up brain damaged and forgotten. Bradley put his heart on the line against Ruslan and what did he get?
1. They booed him post fight
2. They harrassed his social media
3. He's showing early effects of brain damage
4. He is no longer a top p4p fighter
5. His career is on the line in 2 weeks
In the flip side, Floyd and B-Hop stick to what they do best and are still healthy, financially stable and hall of famers.
Look at the Cubans. Gamboa got knocked out and forgotten. Lara is still working and made $1 million in each of his last 2 Fights.
If you have the skills and abilities to win without taking punishment, your best bet is to use it and have a long sustained career.
Fans want excitement. You have to be defensively responsible and let your hands go at the same time. It's a simple formula, really. Look at Legends like Whitaker, Ali, SRL, Hearns, Hagler, Duran, Chavez, Pacquiao, Barrera, Morales, etc. They were exciting to watch and they were good defenders as well. What happened on May 2nd, should change the way you watch/judge a fight. Let's take it back to the days where a fighter is penalized for excessive running, holding, and dirty tactics. You should have to fight to win a fight. You cannot take away a Champion's belt when they are coming forward and trying to make the fight. You used to have to take away a Champion's title. Judging now is a joke and the refs are as well. Floyd has come along and destroyed what little pride boxing had left with his antics and cowardly ways in the ring. His finale fight won't do 600K. WATCH! Fans are tired of him and aren't fooled by his pot-shotting, excessive holding, dirty tactics, and running anymore. Manny exposed him for what he truly is, a coward. He fights like a punk. It's hard to watch that nonsense.
An utter nonsense. Stop crying.
he's gonna do atleast a a milllion buys in his next fight. fans are tired of watching floyd mayweather and a lot of them say that they're not gonna buy/watch his next fight. but once they see that sho time promo all these people (including many people here on boxingscene) suffer from a severe case of amnesia. people start getting wet. they call up their cable providers and order that 59.99 HD PPV asap.
Idk bro. He couldn't crack a million on showtime until he fought Canelo and Pac where he did 2 and 4 million. After seeing how boring the Pac fight was, idk who he fights and if fans really will care.

I totally agree...........

People wanna see floyd lose. He knows that,so he only fights fights he cant lose in. He picks his opponent,he doesnt fight who the fans want until the opponent is no longer a threat.
Exciting Can come when risks are taken.
Are there people on football forums saying "so and so team needs to understand that just running the ball isn't exciting. People want to see deep passes" or on a basketball forum "so and so is so boring with all the lay ups. People want to see guys shooting 3s". Or is it just boxing where the method of victory is more important to some than the actual victory.
No.

It is but not by that much. I would hate to be viewed as a boring fighter. That's just me though. Some ppl just wanna win and get their money. That's cool but I wouldn't be able to be like that. I would want that when I'm fighting, people say it's must see tv. Not oh, boring Rigg is on. To each their own though at the end of the day you know.
That's true but if you're always boring, people forget how good u are after a while as well.

I wonder why exciting fighters usually lose to these boring fighters 90% of the time. It's because lack of skill. If you lose people tend to forget how exciting you was after a while.

I've never ever said Cotto is a face first brawler. I've been watching cotto since the beggining of his career and have been a fan. I picked Marvella over him, and I was wrong. But I've picked Swift over Matthysse, and Floyd over Pac. But back on point, if theres someone who you consider more exciting, why dont they sell? And no, you gotta WIN! its a sport, competition, where you compete to see who comes out as the victor i.e. WINS. If it was about excitement 12-15 vs 11-12 (wins/losses) would be getting watched, because "boy he might lose all the time but he was EXCITING!" doesnt make since does it? Youre just sub-conciously hating on Floyd because he didnt have to BANG to beat youre favorite fighter. What fun would boxing be if only the strongest won everytime?
Sh*t didnt work out for who you rooted for, pick someone to root for who actually have skill, you would enjoy BOXING then. but as for now, stick to watching bar room brawls or Professional wrestling.
I'm not saying u said Cotto isn't exciting. I'm saying that he is exciting and doesn't have to go out and brawl to be exciting. His skills are enough but he bangs too. And idc if floyd beats all my favorite fighters tbh. But if I say it's not exciting or that he's a point fighter or boring u shouldn't be mad. If it's a boring fight then it's a boring fight. If most of your fights are boring then you kinda are a boring fighter. It's not about being the strongest at all. If u sit and watch a fight u can judge if it's exciting or if it's not. It's very simple for me.
They were landing some bombs. They didn't deserve that either way. If those are the types of fights that will draw boos then you might as well boo 98% of fights that take place across the world.
I swear, I'm not trolling bro but I ain't see no bombs man. I must have been drunk too like the rest of people there. The problem was that the buzz and building died after Felix's fight. Same thing happened when Rigo fought Agbeko in NJ after Tapia got killed by Kirk. The buzz in the building died and all the fans left. And when 2 guys boo it sounds like 2k are booing. They didn't deserve to be boo'd last night but the fight wasn't all that.

Apples and oranges - Put Mayweather up against the caliber of fighters Golovkin's been up against and you'd get more knockouts.
