Honestly they should just get rid of it. It's old fashioned and is rarely useful. Most of the time, blows are called that didn't even land, and the best punches are overlooked. And sometimes when it's really bad, blow-by-blow commentary can paint a different picture of a fight especially to casuals.
They should get rid of it and just let boxing analysts like RJJ chime in once and a while and give us interesting insights.
Wow guy. Just wow!
Sorry but they're miles better than US commentators. Even the Boxnation guys are better than US commentators. US commentary is very much "say what you see" with very little insight, interspersed with pointless trivia. Awful to be quite frank.
Back in the day i downloaded a version of Haye vs Ruiz which had sound but no commentary. It was great.
Since then ive always thought there should be a no commentary option, especially for PPV's.
It was either Sky or BBC who did this for a short while. It was bliss.
I on the other hand really like the commentary that HBO brings, I think Lampley and Kellerman are doing a great job. I'm always happy with them, except the few obvious times, like Bradley Pac 1 and 2. But that's what happens when you cast every big fight. You can't be accurate 100 % of the time.
Roy Jones is really and insightful too, so I like that it's two commentators and one analyst.
British commentators are really good too.
I like Kellerman and Lampley too. I like the commentary in general, but that's because I've only been watching boxing for about eight months. I learn a lot from watching the fights and I learn a little more from the commentary. Obviously some are better than others, but I enjoy it all.
I see where the OP is coming from, though. I've watched a lot more American Football than boxing, and I usually watch that on mute so I don't have to hear the commentary. But since I'm still learning boxing, I like to hear what they have to say about it.
Someone suggested to me not too long ago, the idea of a "mute commentary" option for, say, HBO or SHO. It's self explanatory: you could mute the commentary and just watch the fight how it is. I think it's a great idea.
A good fight, speaks for itself - you don't need commentators telling a story

You really want guys like Lampley, Kellerman, Mauro, and Paulie out on the streets? Col. Bob Sheridan, you want him out there on Saturday nights?
I sure as hell don't lol
Commentary gives these characters somewhere to go

Unfortunately, there is no way for the networks to gauge how many folks use the mute button. So, the paid-off guys continue to quack. The problem is not their ignorance. The problem is the script they are told, or paid, to follow.
The problem with using the mute button is you don't get to hear the crowd nor impact. But it's tough listening to guys su*king dick live.
It would be pretty cool to just focus on ring audio so you could hear the power of every punch, what the corners are saying.
Some of them have chemistry like Lampley/Merchant but most don't. Most are just annoying. I have to mute Kellerman.
Yeah Kellerman is awful to listen to. When there is a knowledgeable commenter working with him you can always hear they're reluctant to correct him or go against what he's saying so as not to make him look like a moron.
Yes get ride of it. It's not the radio days. I can see everything for myself and I don't need anyone to tell me what I saw. The only reason I leave the sound on is to hear punches land. Atlas is the very worst. He says stupid things for every second of every round. He never shuts up.
Watch Pacquiao v Bradley 1. The HBO team were literally saying whatever they wanted to see, not the reality. They were saying Pacquiao was landing shots that were blocked and completely missed, not just a few times, but for the entire fight.

Guys like Kellerman or Mauro are useless, they just are loud and try to add excitement. It would be better if they had ex fighters doing most of the commentary, that being said Al Bernstein is one of the best, dont mind him.
