Does Golovkin break the Middleweight title defense record?

The downside to Golovkin's reign is he wasn't able to get Sturm and it looks like Quillin is in an odd situation with a draw in his last fight. And now he's dealing with this Cotto and Canelo situation. Would the IBF let him fight for their belt? People can sh*t on opposition all they want but they have to recognize his activity and domination of his opponents. Him fighting 3-4 times a year makes him a fan friendly fighter and people will have many fights to remember him by just by the sheer violence he brings to the ring. Edit: Golovkin should target the winner of N'Dam vs Lemieux. If Lemieux wins we're in for a HELL of a brawl.

I think OP is talking about number of title defenses (20). I edited my post because I think my math was messed up, but the OP does bring up duration. I think it's almost a guarantee that GGG will break the title defense record, but I think it would be more impressive if 3G could reign for longer than B-Hop did. I doubt he'd have the motivation to.

B-Hop's reign: 4-29-1995 to 7-16-2005 (10 years, 2 months and 17 days) GGG would have to really slow his activity in order to reach 10 years. Can you imagine him fighting 3 times a year for 6 more years?

I actually think he was interim champion for some of the time people thought he was regular champion. He was promoted immediately to regular champion upon winning it as an interim belt. Felix Sturm was the WBA Champion then Golovkin won the belt and the WBA made Sturm the 'Super' Champion and Golovkin the 'Regular' Champion. Whatever the fu*k that means...

This is counting the time he was also the WBA's 'regular' Champion. He is currently at 14 defenses and close to 5 years as a champion. Hopkins has a 10+ year Middleweight reign with 20 record defenses. Second is Carlos Monzon with a 6 year 9 month reign with 14 defenses. If Golovkin stays at Middleweight his entire career and keeps his activity up he would be at 20 defenses within 2-3 years. He can break the number of defenses, but not the duration. As sad as it seems to say this... I think Golovkin will retire within 2 years.
