DETROIT (AP) -- An opening event is Monday for a new version of the former Detroit boxing gym of late Hall of Fame boxing trainer Emanuel Steward.
The Detroit Free Press reports (http://on.freep.com/1IKULMJ ) the Kronk Gym will operate from a church basement on the city's west side. Details are posted on the gym's website.
The original Kronk Gym opened under Steward in the early 1970s. It was closed in 2006 after it fell on tough times and vandals stole copper piping and wiring from the building. Steward moved the gym to another location and it was closed after his death in 2012.
The International Boxing Hall of Fame trainer worked with a long list of champions, including Thomas Hearns and Wladimir Klitschko.

Exactly, it was because the place was a dump that it was so good. You don't turn out fighters in fancy gyms, you turn them out in rough conditions.
True. The best boxing gyms are the basic and gritty ones, not the squeaky clean and shiny ones. I would rather go to a gym with worn in equipment and looks like it could use a bit of work rather than one with everything nice and top of the range.
those kids are hungry for success. the ones that can and do handle the heat end up very good fighters, at every level.
I'll be heading down there Monday. :boxing:
Yea, if you aren't hungry to be a real fighter you won't stay. It is a quick way of separating the men from the boys.
Once that is figured out then it is imparting knowledge.
so a fighter that comes from rough neighborhoods/rough condintions that trains in a fancy gym wont become a great fighter?
seems legit.
They won't be the same as if they came from a gym like Kronk. They might be good, but the same hunger and toughness will not be there.
Once you are on silk sheets that desire is hard to keep~
It smelled like a gym. It was the heat that would drive on lookers out. The fighters learn to love it, the heat.
Disgusting. I feel bad for their wives who have to live with stinky men. I can only imagine their hygiene at their homes.
Golovkin looks like a very clean cut, well groomed individual who would never train there. Same with Klitschko.
You can have good hygiene, be a well groomed man with actual consideration for others, and still kick ass. Like me.

Like I said dude I was talking to couldn't handle even that~ and it was a mixture of a lot of stuff you could get used to it.
That is how dancers are made, not fighters~ which is funny considering the type of fighters you like.
Like I said "No Bitches Allowed", not a single bitchmade dude has ever survived Kronk. So you should in fact stay as far away as possible.
I would beat UP ANY Kronk gym wannabe while wearing my black frame glasses, skinny black jeans and Armani polo. Oh, and wearing my Givenchy Play, smelling real good. I guarantee you that.
You turn them out with true knowledge. In a dump or a state of the art gym they can be churning out beasts. But you can't do nothin' if you ain't got the knowledge.
Conditions are important to cutting that line of toughness deep into a fighter. If you can work hard and concentrate on your game through conditions like that then the fight is almost easy.
If a guy can't hack that then all the knowledge in the world won't help them.

For most of these savages, the girl in your sig would be ugly and unacceptable because she isn't vulgarly thick, doesn't look like a ghetto princess and doesn't have cellulite.
Hell no. What kind of conditions are those. I gag from bad smells. Again, I could never train in a broke ass gym.
How hard is it to use some Febreeze (Fresh / Cherry scents to give it that clean feeling). Good A/C system. I'm good. Also, I like to train with people who have good hygiene and actually maintain themselves like civilized humans. I'd curse the hell out of the Kronk Gym owner and would get it shut down ASAP for unacceptable human conditions.
That's why Planet Fitness rules. I can't wait until they come out with a boxing section then they would rule all like Kronk. Real champs would come out of fancy gyms.

lol abner mares has a better personal gym then they do lol.
but hey its in that shitty ass city known as detroit what you expect.
^^ THIS!!!! That was the gym I was trying to think of. It's his PRIVATE GYM, looks x80239293829 times better.
Come on now. Ya'll need to get some sense of style and fashion. That gym is hideous, looks like Ronald McDonalds kidnapping hideout.
If you even had the audacity to walk into the original Kronk Gym, I guarantee you the smell would force you out. The smell there was essentially a sign that said "No Bitches Allowed".
You wouldn't even make it through the neighborhood it was surrounded by.

You've obviously never seen the original Kronk. It was nothing even close to resembling a "state of the art" gym, yet they raised beasts.
What pleases me most is seeing its still called Emmanuel Stewards Kronk Gym. Hope it prospers :boxing::boxing:
More beasts might come out of it... point is, it looks outdated. It looks like a gym from the 90's. The letters on the wall aren't even lined up properly for Gods sake. Look at the floor tiles...
It's disturbingly ugly and depressing. I'd end up hanging myself from the heavy bag mid way thru the workout.
They could have done a modern version of the original one, keeping the same colors and whatnot.
I would NEVER train there. EVER. And I'm a highly touted prospect, I might go pro soon.

It is a REAL Boxing Gym not a fuking 24 Hour Fitness! Looks good enough for fighters to go and work and to get young kids off the streets in Detroit and hopefully keep them out of trouble

what's wrong with it? looks like every other boxing gym, the essentials are there. plus i don't think they have that kind of money to make it modern state of the art, whatever that is.
The only thing you could consider modern state of the art in a boxing gym is brand new gloves. :lol1:
