JAMES DEGALE is out to win the hearts of the British public this week in Boston.
He is preparing to take on Andre Dirrell for the vacant IBF super-middleweight title and one look on social media will give you a clear indication of how DeGale splits opinion.
“Cocky”, “arrogant”, “w***er”.
They are just some of the words that have been used to describe DeGale when I mentioned his fight on Saturday night to three different people from outside of boxing.
How wrong they are.
DeGale, 29, became an Olympic gold medallist in Beijing back in 2008 as he claimed middleweight glory in the amateur ranks.
A national hero and the only member of the GB Boxing team to come away from China with gold.
But just over six months later on his professional debut, the Londoner was booed out of the ring.
DeGale did struggle with his journeyman opponent Vepkhia Tchilaia but it was still a harsh move by the crowd in Birmingham that February night.

As I said I understand the point you're trying to make. James went down the IBF route and George down the WBC route. Fact.
It doesn't really matter which route they went down. If Groves beat DeGale in #2 he'd get a title shot after.... with a lot of money in his pocket.
Source for Groves turning down more money?

Is it very premature me talking about a trilogy? Yes 100% fact. It's the dreamer in me.
My point exactly.
Well if De Gale beats him it will make it 1-1 then as you're fully aware we have a rubber match to end it all. We could have a Robinson vs Lamotta saga if you want 4,5,6? One things for sure none of those fights will be held at a venue as prestigious as Wembley. I understand the point you're trying to make BTW.
Yeah, not trying to make a point, just making one. 2 comes after 1. Simples, yeah? Maybe there's 3, 4, 5 in the future. Maybe 20+. BUT Groves seemed quite reluctant to take #2 for more money than he's ever made previously, so talking about a trilogy is very premature.
More than aware. De Gale knocks all senses out of him in the rematch (my opinion), to set up a rubber match. Make sense now?
Very, very tenuously. Why stop at just three if you're speculating so wildly?
The country is definitely behind you this weekend. You beat Dirrel, Groves beats Badou bring the titles over and finish of your trilogy in Wembley.
You know they've only had one pro fight, right?
I wasn't a fan at first. I like him now though and enjoy watching him fight.
He's toned things down somewhat since his loss to Groves. I'd say he was more liked than Groves these days. Depends who you speak to i suppose.
A friend of mine who's a sports photographer went to his house to do a shoot at the height of Degale's 'unpopular' phase. He said Degale was nothing like he showed in the media, and that he was just a genuine nice bloke. From what he saw anyway.
He acts like a bit of a ****y prick in front of camera's and he has that Amir Khan motor mouth which comes out with some BS sometimes, but I'm glad people are starting to come round to the fact that he isnt that bad.
Obviously it helps that everyone has realised what a bellend Groves is.
